Greeting again, my MALien bretheren! Last week I asked about what people could do to better their local communites. Many great ideas were had, but ideas are not enough! They must be acted upon in order to bring positive change to you or your neighbors! I know the good people of MAL must have done plenty of great things largely (or entirely) for the benefit of others. I present to you all this thread such that we may share and celebrate our good works together in hopes of inspiring each other! In my past thread, @Kyonman noted that one could donate blood to help save the lives of others in trouble! I used to give blood once in a while, but had stopped once Covid hit. I had completely forgotten about it, but with his comment I was reminded of how easy it is to save a life, so I scheduled an appointment and spent a little time donating blood late last week! As always, the hosts gave me some juice and pretzels as a thank you. But this time they through in a Shark Week blood donation t-shirt on top! So much for the saying "No good deed going unpunished", eh? [Then again, I couldn't drink beer for 24 hours prior to donating :( :( :( ] That's my recent, awesome contribution to help someone else. I know many of you have all helped others before, too! So let us all share and recognize each other's great works! Prepare to be inspired, MAL!!! |

When I am asked by homeless/poor people to give them some money if I have on me a wallet I'll always do. I also give a cigarette if they ask me. Aswell as it is more rare but when people ask me to buy them a food I'll also do that, last time a teenager/kid asked me at main train station of Poznań if I could buy him some food so I've made for him an order in McDonald's [that's the only place to buy food in Dworzec Zachodni]. Aswell as I've been a volunteer in Akademia Przyszłości, aswell as not as a volunteer but I've helped a little bit when I was a volunteer for AP to gather money for WOŚP because my colleague from AP was also a volunteer for WOŚP I was bored at that day so whole day I was going with her and collecting money for charity -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Orchestra_of_Christmas_Charity Here explanation of it [copy pasted from wiki, but it doesn't have english lang so used Google translator]: Stowarzyszenie Wiosna - Polish charity organization, established in Krakow in 2001. Since 2004, it has been a public benefit organization . The main assumption of the Association is to promote solidarity with the needy, mediate in organizing help and co-create civil society . In the projects of the association, the most important thing is to connect people in need with donors and volunteers. Actions are based on the mechanism of intermediation - the Association creates structures and tools thanks to which donors and volunteers can share with those in need. In 2010, over 7,000 volunteers cooperated with the Association - Super W. The founder and first president of the Association until 2018 was Fr. Jacek Stryczek [1] . Akademia Przyszłości - is a year-round program of individual educational meetings for children who grow up in difficult conditions and therefore have learning problems. The main motto of the action is the slogan We inspire to grow! So far that's all what I can say about helping others in smaller or larger matter, I've stopped being volunteer in AP as it was draining me mentally by knowing how fucked up some children life can be, instead of typical childs dreams of "Being an astrounaut, being this, having this" I've always heard "To have money so I can pay debts of my parents" or "I wish my parents would stop drinking" or "I wish to have a car so we can finally drive together as family as we have no car" etc. and that's just the soft part of it. [A single day in WOŚP shown how many people give money for it and are willingly to help, aswell as how trusted this charity is as said in wikipedia. I've seen some drunk dudes who would normally provoke for a fight to give over 200-300 złotys and in the other hour I've seen some other couple who I guess wanted to look nice and just put 10-20 złoty, nonetheless the amount says nothing just the gesture and real intentions, just saying as the stereotypes and judging the book by it's cover shouldn't have take a place which I've done back than and I've seen alot of surprises during that day, all of them were positive surprises] |

I do most of my transactions with my debit card, so I don't wind up giving to the homeless as much, sadly! Donating to the Against Malaria Foundation has a higher estimate of lives saved per dollar spent than other expenditures, so probably me doing that. If you're more interested in doing nice things for the people around you, when I see something someone I know may like that isn't too expensive while shopping at a store, I sometimes get it for them as a gift for later. There's no need to wait for official holidays to show someone in your life that you care and think about them. |

I used to volunteer "work" as mental counseling (don't know if that's the right word lol) for children and teenager for a while. Basically an organisation brings you in contact and then you chat with them about their problems etc. Most of the time they didn't really have serious problems but just needed someone to talk to. Well I hope I could help some of them somehow. I wished I had a person to talk to when I needed it. |

I raised over 200 USD for my university food insecurity program. Since we are on the topic, @lorreen once gave me a free years worth subscription to Crunchyroll! What else...I supported my imouto during a breakup, and she and her boyfriend eventually made up as they both became better people. |

That's great to hear that you went to donate blood! It makes me so happy that my comment inspired you to set up that appointment. This post definitely inspired me to schedule another one since its about that time! |

Ironically it's actually better to donate blood during non major news event emergencies. During big disasters blood banks actually get overly full sometimes. Ive donated my hair couple times before to an organization that makes wigs for kids with cancer but that isn't very recent. For whatever weird reason I have on a few occasions put away stray shopping carts from parking lots into their proper place at places i dont even work at I just was doing other people's jobs for them for no reason in mind other than making things more convenient for others. Other stuff is even less formal and more personal so I dont know how to gauge how effective i am in anything |

I have never owned a car, and I mostly travel by train, as long as the journey takes less than 12 hours long. I have also spent a lot of time helping (fellow) students, although they should have paid me with money, not with slanders. Last, but not least, I have never claimed the blood of my enemy! Giving alms is not "awesome," it should not even be mentioned (M 6:2)... |

So many MAL users are sharing their good deeds! Seriously, I hope you all appreciate how your actions have positively benefitted others around you! A world with more people like all of you is a world that would quickly become much better!!!! kuroava said: i always give money to homeless people, for years now, i know theyre gonna buy booze with it but i just dont care That's awesome, but don't be such a pessimist! I'm sure some of them have used your cash for something a bit more valuable. If you're worried about the homeless trading the money for booze you could donate food or clothing or something to a homeless shelter instead! Who knows, maybe the other person now has their dream job! Or perhaps they can now make enough money to buy a better house, or gifts for friends at Christmas, or maybe just a new pair of shoes! If they wanted the job, then something good will eventually come from the money they made. I'd say giving up such an opportunity for yourself for someone else's benefit certainly counts as a good, selfless deed in my book! Originally they requested a close to full foot I think it was but these days they also accept 6 inches of hair Iirc. Other requirements is your hair isnt chemically treated or dyed. |

Few years ago I helped someone overseas make a CV and did 'practice job interviews' over voice chat, to help with her confidence to apply for her very 1st job. (I even had paper in front of me, so she could hear paper sounds like I was flipping through a folder) She got the job, she's a beautiful girl and I hope she's on top the world right now. |
