Do you ever hang out at coffee shops/public areas with wifi with your computer? Why/whynot?

Well I always had this misconception of people using their computers at coffee shops and public wifi areas (Library, restaurants, stores, etc) that they were complete douchebags and just there to show off their pc's yadda yadda. But after getting one myself and doing the exact same thing those douchebags do I dont think they're as douchey as they were before.
I still think they're a little douchey (including myself) but im sure not everyone is doing it for the same reason I am doing it.

My reason? I live in the shtty part of town and my A/C isn't the most prestine units available. So at around 1400 to 1700 my room skyrockets to 95F and even up to 115F. So I just have to get the hell out of the house. So my escape? Coffee Shops and Bookstores. Its cheaper to mooch free a/c and wifi from them than staying in my house and have my PC over heat just b/c my house is too hot.

I'm sure some other douchebags go to the public WiFi spots for the same reason of escaping their home for a minute. But what is your reason to go to or not to go to these Public WiFi areas?

I go to Starbucks and Caribou Coffee occasionally to steal bandwidth sometimes. But the last time I had to go was in February when I had no power at my house (no internet too).

I don't think it's douchey, nor do I think that people are trying to show off their computers. I think you're a little judgmental of people's intentions.

No I don't. Maybe if my house got as warm as that, and I needed to escape from the heat I would. But it's quite comfortable here and my internet isn't to bad.

I do not. I can't see the benefit in leaving my house to do things I can just do when I wake up. Not only that but my sudden and plentiful urges would be halted.

Most people I know who bring laptops to libraries complain about themselves not getting any work done. Yeap. I guess I consider myself lucky for not having a laptop. I know I'm one of those dudes who can control whether or not to buy something, but totally uncontrollable when I actually have the object at hand.

We don't have such things as public wifi areas here. No, maybe there are some somewhere...but I just never noticed any.

I've done it a couple times when stranded with my laptop. Mostly libraries and shit.

Maybe next year when I live farther away and need to commute to campus.

Well tv sitcoms/comedy shows always pit people like this as jokes such as screen writers trying to finish their latest work at a Starbucks, or some guy just surfing the net with a coffee and wearing cargo shorts with some birkenstocks. While there are ALOT of people who do the latter that i have noticed. But overall most people do their schoolwork and such.

...they're still douchey. There's a grain of truth in most stereotypes sir. Thats why they are stereotypes. For the most part, people keep to themselves and even study groups are reletively quiet. Ones that piss me off the most are the business men that just insist on talking so loud that you can hear them 30 feet away.
Haha, speaking of there was this fat italian guy sitting on a comfy chair (as opposed to the normal ones on the tables) that was so large he was egg shaped and he looked like he was leaning back on the chair when in reality that was how fat he was.. well anyways. This guy is on his tiny cellphone talking like a stereotypical loud italian guy. He was so loud, could hear him over my headphones, clearly i might add.

I wrote my PhD thesis either in a library or coffee shop type setting. It gets you out into somewhat different surroundings, there's some activity going on to make you feel a little alive, yet not distract you too much, it takes you away from the distracting comforts of home (it takes like nothing to lure you away from writing), and you can also sip on some nice coffee while doing your work.

I would have to agree with hoppy on this one... I got addicted to these things when I was overseas b/c bandwith is insanely expensive in 3rd world countries.
When I came back to Vegas, I didn't have internet yet so i went to one here... there was a gang war in the gaddamn internet cafe. Home boys brought bats and chains and brass knuckles etc. Silly mexicanz they were playing Counter Strike a little too seriously. One dude realized one of the kids was from a different mexican gang so they went into their car and came back with melee weapons. Its fucking hilarious/dangerous at the same time.

Some kids skull was bleeding, other kids were cut up and shit... i was in the back so i didnt get caught in the scuffle. Had to write a police report and everything.

It seems like it might be nice to sip coffee and browse the internet at a table near a window on a sunny day. Seems like a nice way to get away from the 'blah' feeling of my house.
But alas, I don't have a laptop. I need to pick one up before college starts, maybe I'll start then.

I've only ever taken my computer to the library, but never to a cafe or anything.
Why? Because I use it at home, on my desk. Even though it's laptop and it's function is mobility, I'm scared it will get ruined.

Well... I like being on the Internets... but... I hate being cooped up at home. If and when I can go to a public WiFi to browse the Internets... like post on MAL... I would and have done so. I don't have a laptop (yet). So, the iTouch will do for now.

Coffee Shops: Usually douche-bag or hipster central, who want to show off their fancy computer.

I usually only bring my computer to places like Panera Bread & Barnes & Noble, either when:
A) I'm bored or am hanging out with my boyfriend & want to show him something
B) My internet is out (because of power outage)

I like watching people use their computers though (creepy), because sometimes people do weird things on them that you wouldn't expect.

Yes. Namely to study (I got to study outside my own house or else I can't focus). In fact at this moment I'm showing off my computer during a class about cat's urine.

I use the public internet mainly to downloads, so I don't waste my home limits.

Use a laptop in a coffee shop is 'douchy' (whatever that means) but sitting at home fapping to loli porn is not 'douchy'?

I don't get it...surely working in public isn't a sin? I study sometimes in the cafe because it helps make it less boring. After work I can get a nice drink, listen to some decent music and study at the same time.

In general, it's a pretty douchebag thing to do. Any excuse outside of actually not paying for internet and just leeching (which is douchy enough), is just a cry for attention.

People that do it want to be seen doing it, even if they say otherwise.

I go sometimes with a sketchbook but never a laptop. I go to coffee shops mainly to get away from the distractions of being at home. If I'm out I have no choice but to work on something for extended periods of time. It's a habit I developed going to Japantown since it was so close by.

I don't, because I feel comfortable enough at home. I can see why some people would go though. Free internet, comfy couchs (if you find a good cafe), air conditioning, and food at an arm's reach.

Only if my internet ran out and i was very very in need of going online for something.

For normal browsing and such.. never. Seeing as a lot of the stuff i look at/do is very questionable to the average fuck head you'll meet out in life.. so they won't wanna be seeing what i'm seeing.

I don't hang out alone in public Wi-Fi areas such as coffee shops and bookstores, let alone bring my laptop to surf the net in those places. If I want to relax and sit comfortably, I would do it at the comfort of my own home, where I can pick my nose or wear my favorite (and probably oldest) stained shirts, and no one would give a flying fuck.

I've never thought of people who do that as "douchebags" though. People have different preferences and needs. There are a lot of reasons why one would choose to bring a laptop in public Wi-Fi areas; and not just to show-off.
