The fundamental problem with applying any sort of dark mode is contrast.

For those who were stuck with the original white-on-black, this might seem a temporary step up.
But even for them, it should be obvious that a black background is darker overall than white, which means the user's eyes are opening up much more than when using white.

This is the same reason why bad sunglasses actually hurt eyes more than not wearing.
When this happens and there are large sections of white, it affects how contrast is perceived and makes the composition unbearable for long periods.

On the front page, this is felt in the MyAnimeList logo which is now a large white chunk.
In the forum pages, this is felt in every user's signature that uses large chunks of white, either in their fonts or animated GIFs.

In the aforementioned extension, the dark mode created was a dark grey overall and the colour of fonts were not changed.
That way the contrast between values is not as harsh to the much-more-open eyeballs this almost-black mode presents ...
