I've watched a few episodes of Ashita no Joe because I was curious about how the anime adaptation was and it's not on my list but I'm currently watching Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (1972)

Taro Urashima, one of the oldest known Japanese animated shorts to exist coming from way back in 1918. There was a point in my fandom years ago where I was curious of what the earliest animated titles from Japan were like, so did a fair deal of research and watched what I could find. At least at the time I dabbled into things, Taro Urashima was the oldest known anime to exist. But came to learn there have been a few older shorts that have been discovered since that time.

The oldest anime I've seen is Namakura Gatana. It's one of the oldest anime ever made. It's a 4-minutes short comedy, made in 1917.

I've watched a bunch of really old shorts. Katsudo Shashin, The Dull Sword, one where they meet Poseidon I think. I'm going to watch the 1940s and 1940s stuff next since some of it has really nice animation cuts.

I've watched all the oldest anime shorts in the DB (unless they're lost media of course). All in all a bit more than 150 entries from the 1910s - 1950s.

One of the earliest notable anime I've seen that breaks the mould of pre-war animation and is a precursor of the anime industry that would start to pop up 5 years later with Astro Boy, was Hakujaden from 1958 (https://myanimelist.net/anime/4513/Hakujaden). It was the first feature-film of Toei and the first ever from Japan to be produced, and the second anime movie to be shown in the US.

For the most part the 60s are where anime and the industry started to form in the way we know it but it's interesting to look at the 1950s precursors to that development.
I probably regret this post by now.

I don't really watch old anime, partly because they're harder to access and partly because there are so many good anime to watch from the previous 20 years.

I loved Legend of the Galactic Heroes and it's probably the oldest anime I've watched (outside of stuff I watched as a kid like Dragonball). The outdated aspects and jankiness only added to the charm of the series. If anyone can recommend me an older anime of the same calibre of Logth I'd be interested in checking it out.

I find new animes style boring and souless (with few exceptions), it's fun how perception works..

To answer the question it was an anime from 1929 (Kobutori) for MAL challenge 2017.
If we except this one it's probably an anime from 70s.

The oldest thing I’ve seen so far is Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä (1984), but I don’t know if that counts since it’s a movie. The oldest OVA series I’ve seen is Gunbuster (1988), and the oldest actual TV anime I’ve watched is Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995). Funnily enough, all three of these have Anno Hideaki in common, either as a member of the animation team or as director.

I've watched a lot of those 1910-1970 shorts, but in in terms of fully fledged anime as in TV series or feature length cinematic movie:

Momotarou: Umi no Shinpei (Sacred Sailors, 1945) - first feature length movie made in Japan
Jungle Taitei (Kimba the White Lion, 1965) - Broadcast in a re-cut version (shorter) on German children's TV when I was in the target group ... loved it to pieces. Doubles as first TV anime in color.
Ashita no Joe (Tomorrow's Joe, 1970) - Oldest TV show I've watched as an adult. Worth it.

Sorry to nitpick here. OVA are direct to video releases for home video systems such as VHS or LaserDisk. Which did not exist before the 1970s. The oldest OVA proper is Dallos (1983). I think what you've watched are shorts which were typically shown at festivals or before feature length movies in cinemas.

Technically it was Speed Racer or Gatchaman (Speed Racer is older, but I watched more episodes of Gatchaman).

But the first one I watched to completion was the original DragonBall from 1986.

That may change later though, I plan to watch Rose of Versailles later on.

The Rose of Versailles (1979), too overlooked, and it's a shame because the story and the characters are so good, it could use a remake with a better animation though. I also watched a few episodes of Heidi and Marco on tv when i was a kid.
