Brought to you and inspired by: some GameFAQs forum post of all things lol
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/2000121-anime-and-manga-other-titles/64421775

What manga would you like to get the omnibus threatment?
Anime and Manga - Other Titles

For quite some time mangas have been receiving the omnibus threatment in the USA, from back before Tokyopop died (Fruits Basket, Battle Royale and to a lesser extent GTO: Early years) to Viz's Viz Big line of good quality 3 in 1 publications to its cheap 3 in 1 compilations (Named 3 in 1) to Dark Horse publishing Omnibuses of CLAMP titles to Kodansha's USA Omnibi.

My prefered omnibi are Viz Big since they have color pages not included most of the times, mm anyway what omnibus do you think should get this threatment?

Remember the manga has to be somewhat popular enough, and in some cases an OOP series like X.. In other cases it justs weird like Lone Wolf and Cub.

Hello everyone, welcome to yet another Manga Discussion made by yours truly ✩

So sometime ago, being a bit of a crazed manga collector, I was randomly searching around for omnibus manga prints and volumes when I stumbled upon the above post. There surprisingly isn't a thread quite like this on MAL, so I just kept it in the back of my mind for a future discussion!

For those who do not know, an omnibus volume contains several volumes in one book as opposed to having each of those volumes separately. These omnibus prints usually put 2 or 3 volumes in 1 book, though I've seen a few prints that stuffed in even more than that—such as the somewhat recent 20th Anniversary book for Paradise Kiss, which contains all 5 volumes in 1 extremely bulky volume.

(Source: BOOK RIOT)

Regardless of how they're printed, these books are usually pretty big and bulky as a result, and cost more than the average single volume; but I find that they can be fairly affordable ways to collect a series, as for example one omnibus volume of a Shonen Jump series that contains 3 volumes in 1 will usually cost less than if you had bought each of those three volumes individually. Despite this and that some prints use some specially made covers (such as Udon Entertainment's recent hardcover print of The Rose of Versailles), some people still have their (frankly understandable) gripes toward omnibuses though.

Me personally, I don't have any gripes and even own a couple of omnibuses myself—so I'm super excited to discuss this with you all!!

★-⋆-⋆-⋆-⋆-⋆-⋆-⋆-⋆-⋆-★

It wouldn't be any fun to start a discussion without answering the question myself, so here's also some of my picks:
  • Magical Pokémon Journey (10 volumes)
I would love to revisit this tiny fragment of my childhood, but English copies went out of print way before the end of time... seriously, good luck to anyone actually trying to collect this lol. This was the first Pokémon manga I've ever seen and it had a lot of heart alongside a ton of its goofy gag, but I sadly can't really recommend it that much as I would like to as it hasn't even been fully scanlated. VIZ Media really needs to try and re-license it again for a new generation, because I think a lot of people would really appreciate it had it become more accessible in today's day and age! An omnibus reprint of this series that doesn't flip the art and keeps the right-to-left format would really be appreciated.

  • Othello. (7 volumes)
I'm in the middle of collecting this atm actually, but I definitely think it deserves to be reprinted again as a new omnibus print for manga fans of today. (Was wondering why Kodansha Comics USA didn't reprint it like they did with Kitchen Princess as Del Rey localized both of these back in the day, but then I just discovered that this series serialized in a rival magazine to Nakayoshi, so ig that explains that...) Probably too soon to say considering I've only read the first volume, but so far this relatively unknown manga about dual personalities was actually a huge pleasant surprise... I'm surprised that people don't even talk much about it at all, especially since it feels relatively unique when compared to its shoujo contemporaries! I really do think this could sell well if it got another chance in bookstores!

  • Zodiac P.I. (4 volumes)
Speaking of Kodansha Comics USA and Natsumi Ando earlier there... now this is something that they should definitely pick back up and reprint today, perhaps in a cool new omnibus form! Another more unique shoujo here, this time on the even more shorter side (so it shouldn't be too costly to print) and following on mostly homicides with a touch of the supernatural. I feel like manga readers who like to collect shoujo like me might like having this gem in their library, especially if they do like a good mystery every now and then. There's also some cool action and fun Western/sun zodiac theming to check out for those outside the mystery crowd!

  • Sugar Sugar Rune (8 volumes)
Oh wow, yet another very pretty Nakayoshi series just sitting here in out-of-print limbo, steadily being ignored by Kodansha Comics USA... good luck trying to collect the volumes in this day and age, especially those last couple of ones... come on, just reprint it, I'd sure as hell buy it for art style alone lol......

  • Kobato. (6 volumes)
I've been noticing a lot of CLAMP's manga getting reprinted around here lately... no seriously, Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Chobits, and even frickin' Clover have been getting nice big hardcover volumes recently released. But what about this series?? Come on, the art all over this one is so beautifully delicate and Kobato is such a zetta sweet girl! There's no WAY you can just ignore this series and not give it the same pretty big treatment!! If some company (or hell, even Yen Press again) ever picks it back up, I'd imagine they'd release it in 2 omnibus volumes... I swear picking this back up again would sell like hotcakes!!!!

  • Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 1 (7 volumes+)
Okay... don't get me wrong when I say this, but as much as I adore Ascendance of a Bookworm as much as the next occasional-isekai-enjoyer, I imagine trying to collect this and figuring out the chronological order would be a nightmare lol. Like come on, there's at least 3 or 4 parts out there now, and each of these have several volumes on top of that? That's got to be confusing for the beginner manga collector... 7 volumes might be a bit much to pack into one book, but hey, if people could somehow pack in all of frickin Death Note into one book, I'm sure anything's possible. The rest of the parts should also get their own respective omnibuses too.

...haha what a surprise, most of these are pretty old girly stuff/shoujo that have gotten out of print...... okay hey I geddit, stop laughing at my predictable taste...

But enough about me, what about the rest of you?
What are your thoughts on omnibus manga and which series do you think should get this kind of print??

Wow, I remember reading Zodiac P.I. Happy memories.

To be honest, I'm not sure what series I'd like to receive the omnibus treatment. I usually collect the series that I really love volume-by-volume, so I probably wouldn't buy a future omnibus unless it contained special extra content.

If it were ever to return from hiatus, I'd probably buy an omnibus of Nana.

I'm thinking about some old stuff and Kimengumi ran through my head, the first 6 volumes 3-nen Kimengumi were officially released but not the other 20. I't very entertaining for a slice of life comedy manga set in high school, it may be set in the 80s but the jokes still hold water.

I just looked up to see if there was any omnibus for godchild and nope i couldn't find any or really, any Kaori Yuki Omnibus so i'd say it would be her works like Angel Sanctuary or Godchild And i also couldn't find a Kagerou Project omnibus either too for the manga side of things so that would be cool to see.

Another series i can think about is Life because i couldn't find one either as an omnibus. But a series i know that i really love, Mysterious Girlfriend X has one and need it!

My parents have bought omnibus volumes though of like a few shonen jump stuff like bleach for example. And i think they're pretty cool having so much volumes in one book imo. And oh yeah, i mentioned to this before on here and on discord, that i got a few Zelda mangas from value village one of them is the occarina of time legendary edition which is the complete manga of volume 1 and 2 of the occarina of time manga which is also pretty cool imo.

Overall great job on dropping the fucking moon as always.

Mhm, i wanna see more of Ai Yazawa's works, get an Omnibus Treatment as well too and i'm still waiting for it to return one day, and also heard there is an art expo in Japan with her works so something big could happen like maybe it will finally return but who knows.

Every one of those already had an omnibus published by Dark Horse. The new Kodansha versions are typically more expensive than buying each tiny volume individually.

This Angel Sanctuary art book I found recently has lots of good art here, a shame that any of her works haven't seen the light of day...

Yeah it's insane how expensive those new Kodansha editions are, don't even get me started on Sailor Moon's Eternal Edition lol
And welp that YP news there kinda hurts...

1)Aside from Omnibus manga volumes my parents found a Legend of zelda botw portrait that i also remember sharing on discord as well too and also alot of anime dvds and they were the ones who found Godhand and dq 6 on the ds as well too and they rather me spend my money on weeb stuff especially from Japan over substance abuse.

2)Oh yeah, i remember you mentioning that as well recently, you got a Kaori Yuki artbook recently and yes do give her works a go right away, instead of spending time in that cancerous drama hellhole known as the mal forums especially places like f.g or c.e which i've been avoiding like all times.

3) Yep! the legendary edition, i got is so worth it alright!

4)And of course! my pleasure as always!

I have only recently began the true spiral into collecting manga myself but I already have a preference to omnibuses for that reason. Series like "Death Note" where you can buy the entire set in one massive book or ones like "Goodnight Punpun" where they but two or three volumes together has saved my pocket (and shelf space) for all the separate volumes.
Here are a few manga series that I personally would love for it to have omnibus versions.

- Haikyuu! (45 volumes)
The full manga ended in 2020 so there still is a chance it will make omnibuses but right now it doesn't. Although its fairly popular, finding some volumes is almost impossible.

- Blood + (5 volumes)
I love this series but have only ever found the last two books for a reasonable price because of how they did not produce many copies of this series.

- Ancient Magus Bride (17 volumes)
This one is more because I would love to have them all easily haha. Another series with just beautiful art and since most omnibuses have special full color illustrations in them the books would be absolutely stunning.

-Alien Nine (3 volumes)
The story is fairly short so it would be perfect size for a omnibus

That's all the main ones I would love to have them but honestly all manga should have omnibuses. I'm not against regular volumes and think they are very beautiful on a shelf but in terms of actually spending money omnibuses are slightly cheaper.

Coming back here to mention KH also has its novels in ominbus format

Composer willing once i save up enough i am so going to buy it.

And for Niso's works Zaregato from what i looked up doesn't have an omnibus but the novels should imo and hopefully more people purchase zaregato works as there is still lot more story that the anime needs to cover.

the steins gate manga i've been looking for copies of the remaining 2 for a while now and i think the sciadv series should make omnibuses of their mangas as its not really often easy to find online and also the psycho pass mangas as well too should get them.

I cannot find an othello omnibus anywhere online so now thats something i wanna see get an omnibus.

it would be cool if this manga i just read had an omnibus as well as an adaptation.

Well, I just learned that the magazine this series serialized in is owned by Kodansha... so yeah, considering this company seems to have merged with or come out of Del Rey (who released Kitchen Princess and I Am Here, which are both Kodansha shoujo that were eventually re-released under a new company name) in the past, it is weird Kodansha Comics USA never put this back up for a re-release...

Here is where you can find that angel sanctuary artbook but its pretty zetta pricey though.

I noticed there was a volume set, for the black butler manga but not an omnibus version at least with what i can find.

https://myanimelist.net/manga/125359/Id_Invaded__Brake-Broken

don't think the manga adaptation of id invaded has a omnibus but yeah it should get one since its that great.

The Earthbound/mother manga's don't have omnibuses as far as i know so i think maybe that would be cool to see happen.

The Metroid manga as well yep, we can also use an omnibus for that as well too.

Innocent Rouge i don't think it has one and i've read it recently kudos to Squished_Lemon for reccing this and yeah it was a wild read and i highly rec it if you wanna see some really brutal stuff.

r.g veda i don't think has an omnibus and since i've read it recently now i wanna see one happen as well as more of clamps older stuff get full adaptations.

Dark Horse did try releasing R.G. Veda in an omnibus format in the past, along with several other CLAMP works.

I have indeed seen a copy of omnibus volume 2 in an actual anime store irl. Still should be there even, hardly anyone talks about this series to begin with.

I just looked up to see if any other outside of darkhorse for r.g veda and i didn't really found anything. And yeah lot of clamp's older stuff is often overlooked these days cause as much as i liked Cardcaptor Sakura its taking too much of the spotlight and CLAMP still needs to finish the other stories.

Grand blue dreaming first comes to mind as I'm currently collecting it, the covers on the singles are nice but I don't like the design of the spines, I prefer a 3-1 like the vizbigs would be nice,it would also be cool to get a release of city Hunter in that format.

Okay, I like collecting omnibus volumes, but I'm sure there's OP fans who think that even this is ridiculous lmao

And I thought the Death Note all-in-one omnibus looked insane...

Pandora Hearts definitely deserves a reprint. PH did get an omnibus release but it was limited IIRC. Most of the volumes are either sold out or really expensive.

i agree as well and its the same mangaka as vanitas as well too so hopefully vanitas fans can campaign to get a reprint knowing how well recieved and liked both series are.

Haha yeah, definitely pretty ridiculous, I think it's a fun novelty for collectors though.

Would love Dark Horse to do a Lone Wolf & Cub deluxe edition like they did with Berserk, Hellsing and Blade of the Immortal so I can finally read it. Not a huge fan of their paperback omnibuses, they seem kinda flimsy.

Lol that is HUGE!!! Although I love One Piece, I think that book is a bit too big for me... and One Piece isn't even done yet! Imagine in ~4-5 years when One Piece finishes and they make an even BIGGER omnibus!

For a collector, a crucified Chu-Chu is aesthetically more pleasing than most omnibusses. That being said, it's a nice option to snatch and snack those out-of-print series to save some money though. Not into the English market much, but a renewed license of, f.e., classics like Galaxy Express would also be nice for you folks.

MAL is far from being my primary site for literature, which is why I’ve stopped doing single-chapter updates. Baka-Updates and two French sites are far superior—more detailed, complete, and less restrictive. They're perfect for manga, light novel, and book collectors like me, making the process much less stressful and tiring. -g-
