| replies are more civil than i thought lol. I do have a question on what you mean by "perfectly accurate"? Do you mean like when its a direct translation but it doesn't really make sense because people who aren't local probably won't get the reference. You should also probably include the whole localization thing where the meaning is completely changed but it makes sense like using western memes in subs instead of the original jp meme in the anime. I just answered depends on the anime tho haha. anyway i have submitted my reply. goodluck on your project op. |

| I'll also post my response here, hope your project goes well! Sub is inconsistent sometimes. Since you're relying upon translations, you'll find that they are almost never the same. Then you take servers into account. If you watch the same episode of the same show on one server, you'll get a different translation from the other. Fansubs are an utter trainwreck, so I'm not including those. Dub is consistent, but most of the time fails to live up to what came before it. When you have an original piece of work, the challenge becomes not to lay down the groundwork for the voice acting, but rather to mimic it. I'll also bring up the issue of dialects and such being lost in dubs. While Steins;Gate's dub perfectly captured what Okabe's character should sound like (Props to J Michael Tatum, he's the man), without leaning too much on the original, many dubs fail to bring that air to the character and capturing their mannerisms. There are also some subs that just CAN'T be dubbed, like the Monogatari series; the series heavily relies on Japanese-wordplay and concepts, that just won't translate. This is why I'm also relieved that it never got a dub. So yeah, those are my thoughts. |
