Sasaki to Miyano isn’t a BL because it 1) is marketed as a shōjo (demographic) romance/slice of life (genre) in Japan; 2) it treats BL as something separate from the experiences of the characters within their relationships; 3) it’s meant to be able to appeal to multiple demographics, showing that gay romance in manga can exist outside of BL because it can happen in real life, too; and 4) all of these things were the intent of the author.

Apologies for the wall of text. I’ve been a fan of this series for a really long time, so I know a lot about it and have done lots of thinking.

No worries, I actually don't give a damn about anything being wholesome or unproblematic as long as it tells a good story, and I don't get why people are so obsessed with things being completely sanitised. However I'm moreso referencing the comments by other people about "wholesome gay anime".

I'm a manga reader too and I like the series. However, I don't really like how the author tries to adamantly separate their work from the genre because Sasamiya's romance is written exactly like a BL, e.g. Delinquent pursuing the cute otaku/nerd is such a huge trope and it's played straight here. There are a lot of fluffy schoolboy BL with the same romance vibes and a lot of BL that deals with experiences of gay men. Plus it further reinforces into prejudice that BL genre is all trashy seme-uke porn and saying "yeah i'm not like the OTHER BLs". But I do understand what the author is trying to do even though I don't necessarily agree with their methods.

I've also been a BL manga fan for a long time and I can definitely say there are many good ones. Just that none of my faves have been adapted into anime...

It's been a while since I've read the early chapters so maybe I just forgot but the pacing felt so fast and the placement of the flashbacks made the story a little confusing, not sure how anime-only watchers felt. Maybe it's also due to the difference in format, since I can absorb a manga panel at my own pace. If they maybe left 2-3 seconds between jumping scenes I think it would fix my issue a bit.

I love a good shoujo background effect, but they went a bit too heavy-handed for my taste here. It definitely doesn't give off the same low-key, slow burn vibes as the source material. I hope as the story mellows out in the later material the show will dial it back a little.

That being said, I'm still happy to see more gay romcom anime out there.

I'm not a huge fan of BL (animation wise) or the genre in general but the animation is super pretty. I love the expression and interactions from them especially from Sasaki. He's adorable. I'll definitely stick around more to see what happens.

P.S Hirano is my favorite (va that's why)

I thought it was super cute! I'm not familiar with the original manga but I have super high hopes for this one

The art style is beautiful to look at too- sort of reminds me of horimiya and I absolutely loved that show.

The flashbacks were a little confusing but not too hard to follow. Can't wait for episode 2 :D

Pretty good for a first episode. It was hard to follow at times, but given it being purely exposition it's not that big of a deal. The two main characters already have me loving them.

Also, I see Yuuma Uchida has a voice acting role in this show. I can never escape him, it seems. Not that'd I'd want to, though ///

I liked it, i was hoping for the animation to come out! But I would loved if they adapted the story better to the screen. I mean, the continuity of the scenes is just like in the manga, but in the anime it seems a bit strange. Besides that, it was ok. Loved to hear Matsuoka-san on Hirano-senpai ╰( ̄ω ̄o)

THE BELLS at the beginning!!!! It's giving me pleasant memories from maid-sama... heck I'd argue that so far this is more like BL maid-sama rather than BL horimiya

I don't watch gay stuff but I thought I'd just give it a go with this one. It was quite a lot of fun. Ngl I'm just watching for the flowery colorful backgrounds and sparkles and twinkling (and, bubbles?) whenever our two lovers set eyes on each other. This stuff is hilarious and gets me every time

anyway, okabe would like to sue sasaki for using his trademarked line

Ahhhh it's here!!! So cute and wholesome <333

I honestly wasn't sure how it'd go since it's a combination of 4-koma and regular manga panels, but the kitty transitions worked really well! Increased the cuteness of the series, haha. The content is really too wholesome for my heart, and I will never get over it even though I've re-read the manga up to date so many times now! Seeing the interactions animated and the characters voiced (Saitou Souma, one of my absolute favorites) is just perfect~ Also Tsugutsugu's Hirano is also great, I loved the scene where he hits Sasaki and tries to protect Miyano, great voice acting ^^

The cute visual effects were everywhere, but I didn't mind it at all, since it's pretty similar to the screentone usage in the manga. A simple and effective way to make the scenes a bit more dynamic.

The back and forth between Sasaki and Miyano in the ED was super cute, too. Looking forward to my Sundays ♥♥♥

Also, I'm so happy to read the comments here that people find it wholesome, despite not being into BL~

I had read the manga a few years ago because of its adorable art, but I remember I'd dropped it for multiple reasons that I'd forgotten. But, now I remember why I had dropped it. The story feels like a fujoshi talking about how brilliant fujoshis are. It got tiring after a while.

The non-linear story telling is not really necessary here. This is not a mystery. They could have rearranged the events chronologically, since that would work better.

I was not planning to watch this anime, but I wanted some BL in my life, and this is the only option this season. Also, Ani One is uploading this legally, and that's always a good thing.

The art isn't as cute and soft as the manga. It's still good, but I wish it looked softer in some way. The art was the best part about the manga for me.

i don't watch much BL but i gave this a try while it's cute i gotta dock points of a what i'm assuming is a textbook case of BL having a main character that it's into BL and acts like a rotten girl is kinda annoying to watch like i just wanna watch a proper gay romance once in a while

Eh, feels like a run-of-the-mill BL anime. I liked that they showed the older guy’s thought process as he falls in love, but aside from that there’s nothing to write home about. Art and animation are mediocre so not much visually either. I’ll give it a couple more episodes but this doesn’t look like it’s for me.

Our prayers have been answered. Finally, a non-problematic, wholesome BL anime series

Y'all have been saying that since No.6 in 2011, Yuri on ice in 2016, Banana Fish in 2018, Given in 2019, Umibe no Etranger in 2020.... consider that maybe there are plenty of good BL lol

I’ve actually seen all of those anime listed and I would personally only consider Given and Umibe no Etranger a BL. Also, I view all those series as having a stronger presence in other genres rather than pure romance (No.6- sci-fi, YoI- sports, Banana fish- drama, and Given- music). The only other BL that I’ve seen as “non-problematic” and “wholesome” is Dokyuusei, but like Umibe it’s a movie.
I know there are a lot of good BL manga, but anime series… not so much. Which is why I appreciate Sasaki to Miyano, esp since I read the manga first.

I love reading the comments saying that they're not a fan of BL (or never watched it) but tries out this anime and will continue watching this. This should be all people who watched anime, to appreciate BL's more and not just straight couple romance!

This is the exact reason why BL anime should ALWAYS have plots and relationships that are not as problematic and toxic as this one.

I am so happy with the first episode. The back and forth of past and present doesn't change the fact that we have a lot of cutesy moments between Sasaki and Miyano, so it's not that bad. It's very promising. Can't wait for what's coming in the next episode!

This was a very wholesome start to this show. It was surprisingly well-executed, which has, of course, piqued my interest. It's more the dynamic between the characters that I'm looking forward to. But then again, I also want to see how this show avoids becoming stale. A few more eps should do in that regard.

Pacing for this ep felt fine. Visually the additional layered effects were a bit much; a visual onslaught, tbh. Somebody tell the guy in charge to settle down. Everything mostly looked okay, but couldn't help but feel the body proportions kept going off, especially Sasaki.

Yeah, I think it is along the lines of the author's intent to deconstruct (?) the typical 90s/2000s BL tropes. Not sure if detaching the manga like that is the right way, but I see the thought behind it.

Also I read that one of the subplots of the manga is Miyano affirming that irl gay romance doesn't fit bl tropes, including his. I find that odd as there are many other BL manga that already don't follow tropes. But then again, some tropes aren't that far from reality either. It's not as if it's a black and white thing.

Man, I kind of feel like this is TOO faithful of an adaptation (with not a lot of passion behind it from its staff). I was hoping for this anime to be a manga adaptation like K-on was to its own manga, with it having lots of anime exclusive scenes to connect its short, four panel gags. Breakneck pacing and really lackluster animation too, big oof......

Also, with all the talk about problematic/unproblematic BLs in thread, I feel like I'd prefer somewhat problematic but interesting BLs over unproblematic but milquetoast BLs like this anime will mostly be (no offense to anyone that enjoyed the first episode tho).
