try to show them something adult, but not with a lot of fanservice
another misconception is that all anime is porn, and showing your college class a pantsu shot isn't going to make them more comfortable with it at all.

Monster and Mushishi would be excellent. I'd use those if I were you. Death Note seems to also be the common recomendation, so that would work as well.

What do they not understand? Anime = movie, series, that is made on computer, simply, animated.
Movie, series that is not animated, has many genre, comedy, drama, romance, action and so on, so why Anime could not have? Tell them that, and ask them, to give you at least one reason, why it should not be adultive.

Friend came up to me and said "Dude, you're always wearing those anime shirts"

I replied "Yeah, I love the stuff. You watch any?"

"No it's too fake for me."

"Oh, well, what shows do you like, then?" I asked

To my dismay he replied "Wrestling."

I am not making this stuff up, lol. He went on to talk about Heroes and shows like Lost, which are also fake, just acted by real people and on SOMETIMES real locations. -_- I will use this example in my presentation. Yes, though, I hear ya, Spupapi, and completely agree/applaud.

The whole main point about movies, anime, and so on, is that to entertain ourselves. Who gives a s**t about fake or not. practically, even some news are fake. And thank. I wouldn't show them some hentai during presentation, but show your friend, some hentai on your phone or something. He might change view on it.

Agreed.

Did ANYONE read the first post thoroughly? He wants to find a mature anime to show his COLLEGE PUBLIC SPEAKING class that anime is not just for kids. It's not just he wants a good gateway anime with a mix of fun and smarts to show his pal

Oh anything that would be appropriate for somebody who's never seen anime is fine, it doesn't have to be about a college class or anything. =)

Code Geass, in my opinion anyway, wouldn't make for a good first anime to someone who's never been exposed to it simply because it employs a somewhat childish art-style combined with mecha and radical fantasy. I would even go so far as to say a lot of the Gundam series are more suitable as they deal heavily with real politics often times without subjecting the viewer to any of the "HIGH SCHOOL CRAZY ANTICS" of Code Geass.

That's not to say I wouldn't give Code Geass a try, but it certainly would not be my first choice. It is an anime for anime fans, probably not so much for the average viewer.

Since I'm a fanboy I'll also throw in one of my own personal favorites:

Gun-Grave

Any every-day fan of mafia/crime/gangster movies or that type of atmosphere will instantly appreciate this show atleast by the third episode. Towards the end they have science fiction elements which would ease the anime-amateur into a more typical anime style. I love this series for so many reasons, it's too bad it doesn't seem to be more popular; I'll compensate by spreading the gospel of it, even to non-anime fans. =P

Baccano! is pretty far from any anime geek stereotypes though. It also wasn't really that confusing, (and even if it is) all the main points are cleared near the end. I thought anime geek stereotypes are Naruto and harem shows with a lack of plot. Fanservice was rather minimal, there was a plot, characters were engaging, etc.

To be fair, the bulk of anime is aimed at children. American cartoons are no different. This does not however restrict the medium to children's shows. If you are looking for a serious anime free of japanese sterotypes, consider House of Small Cubes. It's only ten minutes long, artistic, emotional, and boasts an Oscar win for 2008's best short film. Spirited Away holds the 2003 Oscar for best animated film and receives high praise from MAL reviewers.

I'm not an "anime person" myself, but I do enjoy sampling anime from time to time. Feel free to check my list for ideas.

honestly imo death note wouldnt be such a great choice
To ppl who doesnt like anime probably knows what Naruto seen as some lame show im pretty sure death note would be the same since its well known as well
and those ppl who are really into anime really makes it look lame :/ seriously seeing them running like how they run in naruto with their arms out during PE is just wow...
idk any anime that would be a good choice for a class when you're trying to prove anime could be serious
aw I could think of now is clannad afterstory? for how it can relates to life ect w.e but in 20mins now that's gonna be tough tryin to cram everything [any anime for that matter]
you got balls kid cuz i wouldnt go do presentation and say "yeah im totally into anime and im here to tell you it's no children bs and its some serious stuff" let alone even admiting to being a huge anime fan :x I can imagine how they would react thinking you be some narutard, loser, anime freak, loaner, ect ect seriously

No offense, friend, but you're only perpetuating the problem and idea that anime is childish by saying things like that. I don't know what you mean that I "have balls" for presenting about anime. I'm merely trying to dispel misconceptions surrounding an art form. It really doesn't take balls to talk about something you're passionate about. I'm surprised you, being on this forum, don't understand that, actually.

Also, Death Note is a poor choice because it's popular? That doesn't make any sense, quite frankly, haha. I don't think I'd have any trouble invalidating all of your points if I really tried, so I'm really not worried about anyone contesting my opinion in the presentation, either.

Very strange post, sir (oh, or ma'am).

It would depend on the taste of the people you are showing anime to. If they like sword fights, blood guts, ninjas and other things like than show the Ninja Scroll movie. If they like cyborgs science fiction then show them Ghost in the shell movie. If they like syberpunk then show them AKira. If they like porn ten show them hentai but none of that incest or tranny bullshit. If they like something on the sad side then show Grave of the FireFlies. Start them off with movies or short OVAs to give them a taste,to basically give anime a spin.

Show them the dubbed versions. Because most people do not like reading words when they are watching a video. There is already something for people who want to read and those things are called books. If you can not find a dubbed version then show the subbed version. And let them decide for themselves whether or not the Japanese or the English audio is better.

And under no circumstances do you feed these people BS that anime is not cartoons or somehow superior to everything else.People's bullshit detectors will go off and will not give what ever it is you are trying to show them a chance. PLus that kind of shit will make it look like you are in denial or ashamed of the fact you watch cartoons.

Nor do you do any trekkie nerd shit like wearing costumes, going to convention or trying to related a tv show to real life or try to make it seem like anime is the best thing out there and its shit doesn't stink.Associating anime with a weird nerdy outcast subculture is not going to get people to enjoy it.

Yes, without question, no matter who I'd show anime to it would be in their native tongue; people need to be able to relate to something immediately and effortlessly, and that's the first step.

I disagree with your other point, though, about telling people that it's not cartoons. People, atleast where I'm from, have this idea that anime fans sit in their houses all day and watch Hey Arnold or Rugrats or something, when in reality they could very well be watching a chick blow limbs off of security guards with her mind-powers. It's completely different and I'd never be afraid to say that, nor do I believe it would be wrong to do so. I don't see how that would make me "ashamed", just...well, more knowledgeable and open-minded, really.

Also, about the outcast subculture, the only way anything ever became popular is by first being a small trend or outcast idea. I remember when emo was a weird, strange thing that everyone hated, now it seems like everyone everywhere kind of adopted it, at least in my area.

People FLOCK to a niche idea, actually; they crave to be in-the-know. If someone sees you laughing at something or intensely enjoying a certain type of music, it's human nature that they'll be interested. Test it sometime; bait someone into what you're occupied with by making yourself noticeably interested in it. Draw on a sketch pad next to someone and they'll atleast look at it. People WANT to know what's going on, so outcast subculture is just a misunderstood niche.

Apart from what everyone has recommended, I'm thinking Hellsing, especially the Ultimate series. Take some of the kick-ass fighting scenes (I still remember a scene with a Nazi ghoul eating a baby).

Shigurui is a non-comic based anime, and it has scenes where you crumble your toes.

Sex, fanservice, and idiot plots aren't the only stereotype. Perhaps you are forgetting about the part where they blow a child's head off. Actual age aside, that level of violence not going to go over well with a whole lot of people.

As for not being confusing, I don't know what kind of drugs you're taking but that show was downright schitzophrenic at times, especially the beginning. You can make sense of it if you're interested and paying close attention, but for an audience that's skeptical of anime in the first place you might as well just throw Serial Experiments Lain in their face.

And last of all, it's a twenty minute presentation.

Agreeing with the hyper-violence thing, but I suggested Gantz because of the psychological aspects in it, it's not confusing and you could easily edit the violence using computer software. Just show some of the thought-provoking bits or whatever...

I'll suggest Kino's Journey, ep 1 for your presentation.

Also: Mushishi, Haibane Renmei, perhaps Hatenkou Yuugi.

These are shows without typical anime cliches, and don't have fanservice or over-the-top violence. They're also not childish, and most every episode of these shows will make viewers think.
