What is the most depressing anime of all time in your opinion?

It's hard to win an argument against smart people, but impossible to win an argument against dumb ones.

Welcome to the NHK +1, goes in pretty deep, but it isn't really depressing.
Texhnolyze is crushingly nihilistic.
For manga though, oh boy there's the ever-so-praised oyasumi punpun, the start was a great character study but it devolved into pure depression, as in the MC was basically depressed for the sake of being depressed. the actions he makes are quite questionable as well.
there's also 'I sold my life for 10000 yen a year', but it's quite short.

From what i've seen, I'd say ChäoS;Child is the most depressing. It really play with the characters psychological, and even us watchers.

Honorable mentions:
Plastic Memories
ef: A Tale of Memories
Attack on Titan's character backstories
I Want To Eat Your Pancreas
Your Lie in April

Devilman Crybaby - left be depressed like no other anime did.
Nana - It's a painful watch/read as it's so realistic and you can do nothing but watch the characters ruin their lives with some decisions.
Perfect Blue - very dark.

- Akatsuki no Yona OVA (about the back story - man I was SOBBING about much as when I read it in the Manga, really well adapted and it still breaks my heart and makes me sad just thinking about it. _.)

tbh sailor moon also had quite a lot of sad parts for me personally especially during the end of the stars series, also cried here and there during while watching FMAB.
Wouldn't call the whole part depressing tho just a few moments obviously.
Air was also sad at least from what I remember? Or maybe that part was only in the Manga I really cannot recall other than that it made me sad.

I do not remember incest or rape (unless you refer to the scene of kotonoha and makoto's friend, but there is hardly any talk about that), I think that incest is only in the visual novel

I remember there was a scene with two of his cousins in an apartment that where like pressured into sleeping with him or something. Don't remember their names it was about 10 years ago. His 30+ kids are products of mostly incest.

Wasn't the ending there really positive and hopeful?

Well i would definitely say Berserk (the three movies or 1997 doesn't really matter) or Texhnolyze which has one hell of a soul crushing ending.

Weird pick but Full Metal Alchemist (2003) + its movie always stands out to me as the saddest.

Besides its themes of loss and consequences, it dealt with systemic racism & genocide in a way I haven't seen in other anime before and in a much more grounded way than Brotherhood. And I don't think a single character ended up with a happy ending without having truly lost something.

I still can't get over how badly done the ending is, I would have liked them to give it a solid ending and to answer all the doubts that the anime left, maybe that way it would be much more recognized

One I haven't seen mentioned here: No Game No Life Zero, the prequel movie to NGNL. That movie crushed me and left me emotionally destroyed as no piece of media, anime or otherwise, has ever been able to do (except for the volume of the light novels it was adapted from, that one hurts like hell too). It wrecks you.

Depressed for the sake of being depresses? I can see you have no idea what is depression

no idea what depression is? do you know how fucking stupid you look when you make assumptions about other people without even knowing them? i was clinically depressed for four years because of trauma, and i still can't forget that trauma to this day.
i know perfectly well what depression is, oyasumi punpun did not depict depression well for the MC in the 2nd half of the manga. it was done well only in the beginning chapters, with the uncle. so much of the manga gave time to pointless side characters, that we rarely ever got to see any depth in terms of punpun's mental state, only some hollow words. it's so unbelievably pretentious, but still gets so much praise. it's a shame, because i do enjoy nihilistic works that go into depression, but punpun didn't do that. the second half was more those crazy people on the side and romance, more than going into punpun's mental problems.

i'm not going to shit on you if you like punpun, but for the record, don't assume what people do or don't know, because you probably don't know the first thing about them.
