What's a genre that you find hard to watch and why? Are you willing to change your mind?

Like for me it's mecha shows. I just don't really find giant robots fighting each other cool. I'm still going to trudge through all of Gundam regardless because I WANT to like mecha so might as well start somewhere.

What about you guys?
The Manga is always superior. And we all need to just learn to live with that fact.

Slice-of-life or sports. Art, especially Japanese art, could reach such high dimensions, but it ends up being a rehearsal of tropes in those sports of slices-of-lifes. Just a waste you know.

but the genre i'll never like to see is shojo manga. don't get me wrong, i love romance. i'm sorry but i just can't seem to watch it from a female's presepective. i can't relate and i can't enjoy it.

Oh I understand that. It's been hard to find anything shoujo I like and I've trying for a while now as well.

Idol or shonen ai and probably not. Idol is just a tad too weeb-y for my tastes and as a straight dude shonen ai/BL stuff should be kinda self explanatory, but more power to you if you enjoy it.

Definitely mecha for me, too. I don't hate mecha (or any genre), and I have seen several mecha anime that I've actually really enjoyed. I'm sure I will enjoy more in the future. It's just not as easy for me to get into and stick with a mecha series compared to most other genres. Like I can watch a mediocre slice-of-life or romance anime and be just fine, but I have little tolerance for mediocre mecha. I lose interest easily unless it's really good.

I feel that I don't really need to change my mind. I have nothing against mecha in general, and as I said, I have liked many mecha anime, so I know anime of this genre have the potential to be good. I've seen enough that I feel I've given it a very fair chance, and I know that it will never be a genre I love. I would never go out of my way to force myself to watch a ton if it just for the sake of it. That seems like a good way to sour myself on the whole genre even further. Besides, I don't feel a need to love every single genre. Mecha's just not my thing, and I think that's fine.

Psychological and Mystery when I see any of them in anime mostly I don't care they exists (of course there are some exception), because in psychological I can't withstand watching somebody that is psychically corrupted, and mystery mostly boring for me.

I find most slice of life school anime difficult to watch. The genre generally lacks variety from my experience. I doubt my mind would change so easily since I gave many highly praised anime in the genre chances.

I'll generally give anything a go if it's relatively well received by critics and has a half decent aesthetic.

I'm pretty wary of comedy though as I don't think it is usually translated very well so doesn't come across properly.

I definitely like psychological and mystery stuff the most though so I'm currently watching more of that stuff. Especially if it's got fantasy or sci fi elements.

Comedy, Sports, Ecchi, Harem, and Hentai.

Comedy because I don't find the overwhelming majority of scripted humor in either anime or any other medium actually funny or amusing. I only usually laugh at specific bizarre things in real life.

Sports because I'm not interested in watching real life sports so just seeing it animated with a few familiar story beats usually seems on the dull end of the spectrum to me compared to the variety of everything else there is to watch.

Ecchi, Harem, and Hentai because Ecchi/Harem are usually just very softcore porn + Comedy and Hentai is actual full porn and I don't either seek porn from my shows or watch porn in general.

And if I watch a show that is primarily one of those genres or at least includes those genres as a significant part of itself, it's safe to assume I'm watching it for the other genres it encompasses or other facets the show has.

For me its isekai because in always land myself willing to give isekai another try and here I am stuck in another shitty one. With the same predicable plot, boring characters, and no element of wtf. As of late, the isekai have been looking to the brighter side so I am willing to change my grudge against isekai.

i dont think that 500 episodes of gundam is really the best place to start mecha ^^" maybe neon genesis evangelion would have been a better start point
unless you particularly like war fiction i guess

as for on topic, kids series, hentai, yaoi, sports.. these are among my least watched genres for reasons centered around too long, too male heavy, too little story.(in a bad way)...

Mecha is the first thing that comes to mind.I can't stand seeing robots fighting each other.I mean that's all what we saw as kids.It kinda seems boring and repetitive and very hard to get into.Music is the second genre I would avoid not because I don't like it but anime revolving around a school club making music(that's what comes to mind) is too slice-of-life.Well I may be wrong

Mecha and Sports, I've watched some shows from these genres but only if they are not primarily focused on Mecha/Sports (Darling in the Franxx, Yuri on Ice and etc...). it's really hard for me to get into Haikyuu even though it is the most hyped sports anime.

Sports. I have a hard time watching shows about sports with actors but if it's animated, it's even worse. I just can't get into it, it leaves me emotionally unaffected. (This is apparently because I'm an adult now! Because as a child, I could watch hours upon hours of anime about soccer.)

There's also a finite amount of comedy I can take. A lot of anime ends up being too over-the-top with their humor for my tastes. I like funny scenes here and there but there has to be some serious plot to even it out. :)

Horror, because anime has never scared me
Romance (with some yaoi exceptions)
Any modern isekai that isn't Konosuba
Harems
Ecchi series that serves no use to me other than titillation. I read self-published Japanese comics for that end.

I didn't like Mecha at first, but after seeing Sidonia no Kishi it was a joy. I'd just rather not see any shounen-related mecha anime and I'll be fine. Sidonia is more Space, anyway.

Romance and Shoujo is cheesy. 'nuff said. I can bear with the ones that actually care about other parts of the story aside from it as long as a girl doesn't fawn over a male character for one simple second, please.

Ecchi, Harem, SoL, Iyashikei: for the fact that they're usually too boring to watch more than one episode in a day. Ecchi comedy isn't as boring, but that's about it.

I have a hard time getting into these new battle shounen anime nowadays, they're are too shallow, too comedic and too repetitive for me. I'm more of a thriller, neo-noir and gallows humour (think Courage the Cowardly Dog, but harsh and abrasive) kind of guy. Typical anime comedy is like ultra-subjective.

Another genre I have a hard time getting into is either slice of life, dramedy, romantic drama, rom-coms or straight drama. Love is universal, but it doesn't mean that it's guaranteed to sell like action.

I've tried to watch so much isekai anime to change my mind due to the hype surrounding them and I always get let down.

I mean I'd be willing to change my mind possibly about Isekai if I could find one that was actually good. Harem and Ecchi no thanks

Mecha : I find them uninteresting. I had a hard time finishing the few that I watched.

Ecchi : I'm not attracted to girls and usually the story is boring. Some of them are funny though...

Harem (reverse harem included) : I usually don't enjoy when the main character has more than one love interest. The mc almost never ends up with my favorite character and I often end up feeling bad for the characters that end up alone. And often the mc doesn't end up with anyone and and it's boring lol

I think the one that I like the least is mecha because I haven't found any mecha anime that I enjoy so far. However, I have found a few ecchi and harem anime enjoyable (for example, Prison school for ecchi and Ouran High School Host Club for harem)

I feel like I usually hear people say they don't like sports anime because they aren't interested in sports, but I'm the opposite. I really like watching sports, so watching real sports is way more entertaining than cartoon ones.

There are a couple sports anime that I still want to try watching though, like Megalo Box.

Late it's been slice of life, unless it's laugh out loud funny like Azumanga Daioh or Nichijou.

I also find mecha boring. I dunno, giant robots just don't excite me. That said I hate that the genre has been on a decline and I sympathize with mecha fans. Ya'll did nothing to deserve this.

I think to truly love slice of life you need to have a hectic or strenuous life which makes you yearn for the solace and comfort of the simple everyday lives of fictional characters. I know that after starting college I began to love slice of life a lot more. I missed my peaceful days as a grade schooler where I didn't have to focus on being an adult. So yeah, slice of life doesn't connect with everyone, but maybe you'll relate more to it in the future depending on your situation.

While I rarely play sports in real life, when given the opportunity, I like playing tennis and ping pong. However, I never quite understood what's appealing about watching people play sports. Isn't it just infinitely more interesting to just play a sport?
Part of the appeal of stories to me is escaping the mundane parts of reality, and I can't think of a genre more closer to the mundane than sports.
I think I would be willing to watch a sports anime if there was a lot more to it than just the story revolving around sports: maybe add in some fantasy/sci-fi/supernatural elements. Maybe have dramatic sub plots revolving around cancer or something. Complex stuff like that. Or just be like Keijo and be so over the top and stupid, it's not even really a sport at that point.

Interesting. Why do you like watching real sports > cartoon sports? If anything, wouldn't it be easier to enjoy watching cartoon sports, since cartoons have a traditional story, while real sports are just people playing sports and that's it?

Well i did try to watch some in the first two genre and i'm really not impressed by that category that's why i avoid it. For sports, i'm just not interested in it. I would try watching Ping pong the animation but it's not high priorities on my PTW list.

Anime centered around some sort of game or sport. I find that kind of thing mind-numbingly boring irl so watching it in anime form has never really interested me. It's pretty much the only reason I haven't yet watched shows like Chihayafuru or Haikyuu even though I know I'd probably like them, however, I am watching 3-gatsu no Lion currently which is centered around shogi and it's pretty good so far so idk, this opinion could change sometime in the near future.

I'm also not a big fan of harem. Like, dude, isn't 1 girl enough?

Harem, because I just don't find it enjoyable watching people fight over one person. Seeing two people fall in love without outside influences trying to cause problems/steal one of them away is much more satisfying to me.

I'd be willing to change my mind if there were genuine reasons as to why the MC had a harem. Most of the time its so unreasonable, with the MC being the most bland piece of unseasoned chicken surrounded by attractive people who are fawning over them for no valid reason other than fanservice for the audience. Give me good character development and realistic reasons for love and then maybe I'll listen.

I don't have a genre I hate, I can watch anything with interesting characters or premise. I believe I've seen anime from every genre and haven't got a problem from the genres but the show itself.

So basically I'm open-minded and willing to watch any show of any genre if it has interesting characters or premise.

Mecha generally, with the odd exception. Just don't find the idea of robots fighting all that appealing.

Ecchi is ok provided it's part of a comedy skit like Konosuba for example. Otherwise it's usually a bit of a turn-off.

Isekai, i find lots of them not interesting and just copy paste from another work. Lots of them have same pattern. A normal/losser guy get trasnported to another world (thanks truck-kun :v), become overpower, and make every girl he found on journey fall in love with him.

There are quite a few, very niche genres that I can't watch like the obvious Shounen Ai, Yaoi, even the ones where I'm the target demographic like Shoujo Ai and Yuri.

The one genre I find really hard to watch but really want to get into on the other hand is Shoujo romance. I like romance stories, but jesus christ I hate every single trope the Shoujo genre has. It's not like Shounen is better in regards to how annoying and tropey it can be, but I grew up on Shounen so I've been desensitized to it's crap. I haven't been desensitized to Shoujo's spaghetti bullshit of starting from one point and just going off in random directions before finally reaching the end where you MAYBE get a kiss. Hell, even in shows like Say I Love You where it starts off with a kiss still ends up going nowhere and frustrates me to no end because these characters aren't people, they're god damn aliens. Also most Shoujo heroines are some of the most unlikable characters to me.

I really want to get into the genre though and find the good ones, but it's so intimidating. I genuinely want to just not give a shit about these tropes and suddenly have a gigantic pile of romance anime I can go through should I ever be in the mood for some, but instead I have to wade through the entire heap just to find one that doesn't piss me off and hopefully entertains me.

Harems and reverse harems. They just don't appeal to me at all. I'd rather the mc go down a determined route like in otome games where you get to decide who you'd personally like to romance. I could be tricked into watching one but once I realize what's going on Imma head out. If it's more comedy focused than romantic MAYBE I'd give it a shot but It's generally hard to enjoy for me.

Isekai, I just don't know why but if I read that a series is labeled as one, I tend to avoid it, also harem and ecchi series, I barely know if there's a mostly fanservice oriented series with a decent plot.
