| Off the bat I should admit I haven't watched a lot of hentai, but I've watched a few, most of which are higher rated as hentai goes (at least based on MAL score). With ecchi (at least the good ones), there's plenty of attention paid to telling a good story, with a decent plot, characters and relationships that develop over the course of the story , a well-developed setting... Basically all the things that make any story good even when there's nothing ecchi about it, except that it happens to include some sex/nudity/etc. The hentai I've seen seem to have been developed with the sex scenes as the primary focus, around which they developed plot and characters as a framework for the sex scenes. When I watch it, I cannot help but get a sense that it's nothing but that, a contrived framework. Some of the not-so-good ecchi suffers from one of two problems: 1. The ecchi content is unnecessary and gratuitous; the story stands on its own well enough without it; 2. The story is developed around the ecchi content (nudity/sex/fanservice) much like hentai as described above but within the limitations of ecchi. It's certainly possible to produce hentai that meets the description of good ecchi but without the limitations, portraying sex and nudity freely where it is appropriate to do so. As far as I've seen, producers and writers seem to have little inclination to do so. If you've got a story, keep it to ecchi; hentai is just for fap material. And this is why I have yet to find any hentai that impressed me. If there are examples of hentai that actually have well developed story and characters and aren't just fap material, tell us. I may check them out. |

| Kind of interesting thoughts, OP. I think the thing is, you ask for examples of hentai that isn't just "fap material" but, for the most part, that's exactly what it is. And due to dumb laws based on prudish, jaded attitudes towards sexuality, this distinction between hentai and ecchi will continue. Sure, there are the odd hentai out there where the author clearly wanted to tell a good story and create interesting chracters too, but the environment isn't conducive to doing that. If you're like me and you find ecchi anime doesn't quite go far enough with the sexual content, but hentai goes completely the other way and abandons story, and you find this frustrating, then I heavily adivise looking in to Visual Novels. There are a ton of extremely good VNs out there with great stories and characters, deep themes, and plenty of artistic depth and creativity, while also not being in the slightest bit shy about nudity and sex. All-round fantastic medium. |

I may check them out. Let me get this straight. The title of this forum post is the prob with hentai yet you complain bout ecchi. Let me sum up everything in a nutshell. It is all about intention and execution. If an anime intends to emphasize ecchi over story it should be evaluated by its execution to achieve arousal from the audience. Same goes for hentai. Both are not restricted to not have a story that is or is not contrived. Hentai can have a meaningful story or not. It all depends on intention. The evaluation of the execution determines if the ecchi or hentai is good or bad. You sound like a prude that believes they are above some simple sex filled plot less ecchi/hentai, like one of those guys that complain about female characters with too small waist and mega-tits or superhero films. I advise changing the title of this post to be accurate to your SUBJECTIVE issue rather than trying to pass it off as objective. |

Even if those two anime aren’t your cup of tea, OP, something like Suika or One: Kagayaku Kisetu e might be up your alley. The thing with hentai is it’s a rather varied genre, so it’s all dependent on what you want to get out of it. If you want to watch hentai with better story, then you’d probably need to watch some older stuff like Izumo or Night Shift Nurses. I don’t particularly care for a lot of newer hentai because it’s more specifically fap material with no substance. |

| I never thought that to be a problem myself. Although there are different problems that I have with hentai anime. Which is why I prefer hentai manga to anime. First would be that they are usually low budget which means that animation and art tend to be pretty poor. Manga may not have animation, but it has art way above most hentai anime. Second point, one that might be somewhat related to what you are saying, is that it usually lacks intimacy. Animated hentai is pretty much like live action porn pretty crude just sex and usually little intimacy or any degree of romance. Which is actually interesting because I think that could certainly be added. Now I know it's for masturbating and so for some people that might be good enough. But I always need to degree of connection between characters to enjoy it, not just sex. And manga provides this a lot better. Besides there isn't that much variability in hentai anime, probably because they are a lot more expensive to produce than manga so producers go with certain set of stories that they know will sell good enough. For me these are the biggest problems of hentai anime. |

| It is a contrived framework. That's all porn is about, contriving frameworks that allow for sex scenes to make the viewer masturbate. As far as I'm concerned it stops being porn when the story or characters become more important than simply showcasing sexy sex scenes from sexy angles with erotic dialogue or monologue. It becomes soft porn, like those french movies, or just 'erotica'. But porn should ignore plot and characters in favor of masturbation material. Visuals & Audio & fetishes displayed are the only things I really care about in porn/hentai. |

| As a person that watches/reads yaoi for its plot I can sympathize ^^' A Kite might be something you'll find interesting. If you're not anime-only person, I advise checking out either Korean Webtoons or Manga tagged as Mature, Seinen or Smut. Many have a plot and mature content at the same time. |
| Euphoria and Kara no Shoujo are based on VN's that have a lot of story to them. I haven't read them yet myself, but i know there's a lot more to them than just sex scenes. Don't know if the adaptations carry much of that over though. So they exist, but they're few and far between for obvious reasons. |
