Can the new Persona 5: The Animation anime series be watched by those of us who otherwise have never played the actual game that it’s based on before? Only I’ve watched the one-off special Persona 5: The Animation The Day Breakers episode and still managed to follow and understand what was going on in that, and have also watched both seasons of Persona 4: The Animation too, so I’m guessing that I should still be ok with this upcoming new P5 series!

Mod Edit: Modified title for clarity and/or easier searching.

Yes, it's the same thing as Persona 4. By that I mean that the story follows the game so you don't have to actually play the game to watch it.

this, it's literally persona 4, they just changed the ending and reanimated the whole thing, which is mind boggling since persona 4 is good. just watch persona 4 instead, don't even bother with 5

If you have watched Persona 4 The Animation and can appreciate it, I think it's okay to watch P5A too. Both P4 and P5 follow the same format (lvl up social links, enter dungeon, fight boss, etc.) twisting only a few elements here and there. It'd be almost identical to P4A in presentation if done right. Still, no one can guarantee whether it will be good or not. The game is pretty damn good, tho.

If you liked Persona 4 The Animation, then I don't see why you can't watch it. Pretty similar approach.

You could watch it as it's a separate story. Just play the game though.

How in the world is P5 literally the same as P4?!

Sure, it may have the same formulas (leveling up; social/confidante links; dungeon-entering and fighting bosses, et cetera) as P4, but P5's story is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY DIFFERENT. You know, with thieves and stealing hearts and shit?

I honestly don't know how you came to the conclusion that they're the same when they're really not (except for the reasons I already stated above), so... :/

Actually... everyone speaking shit here.

Truth is WE DON'T KNOW till we watch it. Maybe it's a good as stand-alone, maybe it clearly rushes TOO much (it will rush for sure, but we ll see how much), maybe there too heavy cuts, maybe big changes will make it better, or worse, or complementary to the game.

We ll see.

FOR NOW, looks like a 1:1 adaptation, but all we have are 6 minutes.

Yes, Persona 1 and 2 are the only personas with important links. 3, 4 and 5 only have nods to each other. You can basically start anywhere.
