Why is a characters voice not matching the character a bad thing?

Because this happens in real life as well. So when people complain about a character voice sounding to old to be realistic they actually not providing a good point because people in real life can sound older or younger than their real age. Not every high school age kid has smooth pretty boy voice preset 2 or squeaky schoolgirl voice preset 6.

It makes it harder to take the show seriously and sometimes you just want to laugh instead. The dude's voice in this clip doesn't match his physique or facial expressions at all

I really don't see the point of some moe girl sounding like a 30 year old in an English dub anyway.
I thought that in Gosick, Veronique sounded just a little too old for a cute little girl too, in the English dub, although the voice probably fit her character a little better though.

Yeah it's an exaggeration and I love it :P

I think in some cases it is not a bad thing if the voice doesn't match the character, especially if it is done intentionally.

Take Holo from Spice and Wolf. Although she looked like she was 15 she was actually 600 and thus they gave her a voice with an aristocratic bur in the dub to show that there is more to than meets they eye instead of a moe girl's voice like in the sub.

If I hate the voice sometimes I really can't like the character OR the show.

Like I can't watch Pichi Pichi Pitch because Lucia's voice actress is SO MISMATCHED AND GOD-AWFUL.

because anime has to strive for some level of immersion due to being an irreal medium, real life is the total opposite. that's a terrible analogy. when you see someone who's voice doesnt seem to match their looks, there might be some dissonance but you're experience it in full with all your senses directly. in anime, due to what it is, if you experience such a degree of dissonance any immersion is quickly dissipated.

and Im not even talking about "oh wow its so real" immersion at all, but more like in a sense of coherence inside the world/universe of the anime itself.
Imagination is a weapon. Those who don't use it die first.

Good question. I mean no one complains about a Bruce Lee movie even though the voice matching is bad

It will ruin the whole show. People would start thrashing the show. Listen to Asta's voice of Black Clover. His voice matches his personality but will the people like it.....

I only got used to it after a long while, but at least it's a change of pace from the usual high and squeaky voice of children's shoujo. Caren/Karen's voice was a lot more worse, but I don't know if you got to that point yet...

Maybe I don't WANT a change of pace. XD I mean, Lucia's really cutesy and girly why give her someone that sounds like a BOY?

And that girl cannot act either.

Haha I haven't....but yes, I've heard Karen is really really bad.

I remember that one chick from Asterik war that voice like a cat getting pinched while talking.

and Asta on BC was one of the worst acting i've ever seen.

Simply it'll ruin some moments and immersion.

It just felt weird and sort of out of place. But matching or not is more likely associated with our experience with that type character. Growing up with Ash's voice in English make his Japanese voice feel strange.

Because it usually sucks or is just unintentionally fucking hilarious when it doesnt.

Source: 80s/90s ENG dubs. Ever hear Vash's dub for Trigun? Or pick virtually any OVA around that time and there's guaranteed to be a boatful.

Or another example. A friend of mine who somehow still enjoys wrestling in current year shared a clip of Lesnar speaking in our discord server. Guy's huge, but has a high-pitched, nonthreatening voice. It's hilarious.

Hell, I WORK with a dude who's huge and has such a quiet, non-intimidating voice. I firmly believe he lacks the ability to speak above a loud whisper.

Realism =/= good all the time. Realism = funny though, sure. Its better to have the voice fit the character or persona. Otherwise it just becomes a comedy.

I think that's acceptable if the voice don't fit in a sense that it is difference from your expectation. Like the drawing loli from Shimoneta, or Ononoki from Monogatari, their voice may not fit at first but eventually it's okay once you get used to it. In Cantonese dub, Doraemon is voiced by an old man, and nobody ever found it weird. The voice actor deceased a few years ago and Doraemon is now voiced in sharp voice(which is how he supposed to sound like), but people are feeling weird now. So as long as the acting is good, the texture of the voice don't really matter.

But when the voice doesn't fit because of bad acting. Like the female protagonist of Nanamaru Sanbatsu. Then that's bad.

Her voice isn't even that high pitched though. It's just the screams that are a bit high pitched but It actually works If you watch original Dragon Ball in JPN first instead of watching Z first. Her voice is actually deeper as an adult contrary to popular opinion her kid and adult Goku are significantly different in pitch.

Kid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU3BywnI5lw&list=PLqm3whmfwvDYensli7joHmEI6basrZer2&index=51
Adult: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUxgIYoc_fU&t=5s

Just like how people in real life don't sound completely different when they go through puberty, they just have a deeper pitch and so does Goku.

Oh nice, I like that one.

Well I watched Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in my country dubbed, so the anime that I'm talking about is Dragon Ball Super, well I don't have that much complains when I got used to it, still funny though.

Ok, that's understandable. I didn't like her Goku either until a watched a considerable amount of DB and DBZ in Japanese.

It makes them hard to take seriously. There are some good manga like denpa kyoshi which got ruined because of a specific seiyuu. The most recent now is black clover. They have to get a matching seiyuu or else those studios should accept some backlash from fans.

English dubs always suck imo, so I'm never watching them again...of course they're bad if they're not in the original language...

Agreed, I don't consider it a valid sounding point either. For me a new language is like a complete reset for me anyway.

On the other hand if it's a switch in the same language that will bother me. For instance there are franchises with inconsistent dub casting like Ghost in the Shell: SAC where the series had one very good cast and the compilation OVAs are dubbed by a completely different cast.

That would rock. Speaking of GITS in Ghost in the Shell: Arise and The New Movie's dubs I found it a bit weird because the Major is being played by one actress (Elizabeth MAXWELL) and she has conversations with Kurutsu who is played by The Major's Stand Alone Complex actress (Mary Elizabeth MCGLYNN) so it's like she's talking to herself.... Well, at least in Arise the new voice sort of makes sense since the Major is using a different body.
