Has anyone else ever noticed this? They're made to stay after school or clean things sometimes, but it's never referred to as "detention". Is this just not a common punishment in Japan?

Well you can see some of them lifting buckets or be counseled. Not a common practice I guess.

what no, it's a task... student responsible to their environtment cleanliness... not a punishment... it's common in east Asia and SEA... it does however oftenly used as punishment...

If you don't know, the students are supposed to clean up the school. Most schools in Japan don't really have janitors. So it's not punishment, it's just their responsibility.

I went to a catholic elementary school from first to eighth grade.

I got something like 32 detentions in a single quarter during 6th grade.

my first detention in 2nd grade i got caught throwing rocks during recess when i hit my teacher in the back of the head. i wasn't aiming for her, but ofc she was so mad. she knew it was me when she saw me and my guilty ass looking face. didn't even say anything. grabbed me by the ear and dragged me away.

detention takes place after-school.
the "sit in hallway holding buckets" thing would be closer to a suspension, but you're gone for the whole day... maybe a couple days. depending on how many times it's been.. it's practice for expulsion. normally, they try to rehabilitate by getting them through detentions, but sometimes kids need a reality check. They don't always understand. sucks.

We don't have detention where we live. If we got caught doing something mischievous then we got thrown out of the class and if it was something serious then they called our parents.

At least they get bullied from what I've heard, doesn't that almost the same?

Southeast Asia, can confirm Kuma's point. Having students clean the classroom after class hours is employed both as character-building activity and cost-cutting measures. Not sure about using that as punishment as a rule but it does happen from time to time.

Tongue in cheek observation: The kids are at school (JHS/HS), where I live in Japan, pretty well 6 or 7 days a week. Thus no need for detention! (^_-)

Detention was like a primary school thing, there was no such thing after we got older.
I'm not a lolicon, you're just projecting your tendency to lewd 2D characters.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Like someone else mentioned, I also saw one that had something to do with buckets. I guess it's a culture thing. Japanese kids are supposed to be more disciplined.

I'm pretty sure that detention is just a North American thing. I may be wrong though.
