Seriously I don't get the appeal of it. Please explain why teens are obsessed with pale but neon colors and retro glitchy images.

Maybe its the new version of MTV like the 80s were the rock and roll. The 90s were hip-hop and late 90s to early 2000s were some strange fuse of techno. But I can be wrong. I will admit it is somewhat catchy. Vaporwave to me seems like a counter-culture to main steam media music industry.

It's a nostalgia to a past they never had. These kids are experiencing nostalgia for the first time, but since they're too young to have concrete memories they can only use art to vaguely express these feelings.

basically because they want to feel something that exists before they're born? Hmm I see, interesting.

I don't really know what vaporwave is, but I think it's pretty common for older generations to not understand why the younger generation likes what it likes. When I was a teen, adults didn't understand why I was into the things that I was into, but I just liked the "in" thing for my generation to a point. As a whole I never really knew what was trending, but often TV and radio dictated it for me. I would say most normal teens attempt to keep up with trends since being a kid/teen is (for most of them) about fitting in.

I can't say what they think is great about this "vaporwave" we're talking about, but the fact that a lot of teens are into it means it's probably trending for whatever reason, and teens like what is trending whether it's good or not (which is subjective anyways).

Don't see the issue, I think it's neat. And it's not just a recent teen-thing, vaporwave has been around for a few years at least.

Vaporwave is a meme that got out of hand. I'm not sure why it's so popular, but it probably has something to do with counter-culture and how the genre is trending among the Internet-savvy youth. The spacey and surrealistic feel of it probably also makes it seem complex and deep, similar to neo-psychadelic music like shoegaze, which also is popular among certain demographics...

Someone wrote in Wired that we're not just getting nostalgic for events now, but for devices and machines. That's because machines change so rapidly now. The casette tape survived, what, barely 10 years? These teenagers are born into a society with nostalgia for devices and that's one way to experience it.

I think it's the whole counter-culture occurrence where people take an interest in a trend that's some 20 years older then themselves.
Also, it's not hard to make mashups/remixes with halfway decent v a p o r w a v e.

It's kind of a throwback trend... like 80's and shit just on the internet.

It's okay, idk if I'd call it a genre but whatever i've heard some cool stuff of it.

Although I'm not sure if it was all vaporwave I think some of it was just anime internet music.

It stems from this generation's obsession with 80s and 90s culture. It's the same reason why old fashion trends and vinyl records are becoming popular again. Doc Marten boots, flannel shirts, "mom jeans", 80s-style hoodies, etc.

Am I? I mean, you first become self-aware and starts accumulating memories around age 13. Everything before is too vague. Then at high school at 16 you have 3 years of some memories. You start to develop nostalgia. Plus the internet opens up all these memories of pasts they never experienced.

It's not solid research, but you can't deny the internet more than any other media opens up a lot of experiences we never experience and never could experience again.

I know that when I got on the internet around age 12, I didn't have all these people talking about the good old days. I know 16-year-olds on the internet who have to hear about old things like Linkin Park and game boys.

what do you mean by ''have to hear''? Did you want to say that they haven't heard of them yet or what?

OP: And yeah, I feel bad for those who listen to it ironically. If you would actually gave it a serious listen once you would see that it isnt just slowed down music.
