So i just had this random thought and realized... "wow, i started obsessing over anime since i was in kindergarten. that's 10 freakin years of my life."

yeah XP first anime was either pokemon, sailor moon, or dragon ball z. cept back then i didn't know it was called anime until 6th grade. but even then, i was watching stuff like yu yu hakusho, rurouni kenshin, and shaman king.

so 10 years... i've been obsessing over anime... sadly, i haven't seen as many series as i wish i had.

10 years for me too, this June...when I first saw Sailor Moon on Cartoon Network.

Certainly not my first, but the first to make me look stuff up, find pictures, wait eagerly for the next episode, want to see more shows like it, etc, etc.

Though I definitely wasn't in kindergarten, lol. ;)

Well, I generally lumped Pokemon and stuff together with a whole bunch of American cartoons so I won't go that far back.

Officially, when I started watching anime directed at slightly older audiences, I would say a year and a half ago. Then about 10 months ago, I REALLY got into it. And here I am now :P

Not sure exactly, I watched Doraemon/DragonBall when I was 5-7 and I suddenly stopped. >.> I already forgot about it.

Three years ago, I watched Full Metal Alchemist. Rest for two years, and continue the Mass-Anime Watching again last year. Bleach is my first anime last year.

Counting them up, About 5years I think.

Well over twenty years, though admittedly the past ~15 or so has made it a lot easier with DVDs and more recently (since what, 99 or so?) digisubbing. But I was watching VHS tapes in the late 70s/early 80s as my parents got them directly from Japan, I grew up watching it, without having to wait for or tolerate American butchers and dubs.

I watch since the days of Doraemon, Sailor Moon, Fushigi Yugi, Dragon Ball, etc. but that time I didn't know nor care about the difference between anime and American cartoon. Ever since that time I kept watching "family anime" like Pokémon and Shin-chan regularly. Then I become a Digimon nerd for years.

One day when my household was subscribed to Comcast, I started paying attention to anime. There was on demand. Then I became an Internet user regular back in 2003-2004-ish. I met a friend at late 2004. We both watched Narue no Sekai together, discuss about it and over time unexpectedly we became best buds until today. XD

He introduced me to more cool anime like Full Moon wo Sagashite, Haruhi, and Welcome to the NHK. Then on May 2007 I signed up on MAL. Weeks later Lucky Star catches my attention and then I started to seriously catalog my entries here. That was last summer and that's when I started watching anime religiously.

i cant remember when i first liked anime. i used to watch it in like kindergarted/1st grade (sailormoon, dragonballz) and then i watched toonami's gundam wing, etc. and pokemon as well.

but in 5th grade i began to maintain my own sailormoon website. which made me really want to get fansubs. So i began to look into it and began to buy fansubs around 6th grade. I honestly havent watched much dubbed anime after that... (the first dubbed episode of CCS pretty much made me not like dubs)

soooo i guess i've been watching anime in japanese for about 7 years =]

Watching anime knowing it as 'anime' : 17 years.
If you count the time when I watched stuff like battle of the planets, harlock, voltron, robotech, etc, knowing from all the Japanese names in the credits that it was made in Japan, but not realizing that it was "Anime", then like, 26 years or so.

A lot of people sort their lists differently. I personally don't list anything I don't have on DVD or as a fansub. My old VHS collection is obsolete (I haven't had a VHS player for years, the tapes are probably dead anyway, plus I wouldn't want to submit my eyes to VHS resolutions after entering the HD era.) so I don't include it. I also don't include stuff I've just watched and didn't buy or keep, that includes dropped series.

The Zarin watched NGE around 3.5 years ago but didn't really get "into" anime until around 6 months later or so.

(I'm not including Pokemon or any other early-morning dubbed stuff here, if I do that makes it ~7-8 years)

150 series over 10 years = 15 series per year;
That's a little over a series a month;
Assuming the average series has like 18 episodes or so that's around an episode every couple of days;
Not that far fetched since in the 1990's nobody had an internet connection fast enough to download an episode in the few minutes it takes these days. ;-)

This is also a good point. For people who have limited time and/or bandwidth, they can't follow a bunch of series every season, they'll just follow the best 2-3 of each season, and that's fine. A dozenish series a year is still worthwhile.

Then, there's also people who simply don't watch fansubs, and only watch stuff available on TV in their region, or buy DVDs which of course means they'll be constrained by costs and terrible release schedules (though that's improved a lot in the past couple years).

Somebody who's been watching anime since Eva-ish, and has only seen 150 other series, is still a respectable anime fan. As long as they don't still keep Eva in their top10 after having seen 20-30 other series, since it's so shithouse almost anything can upsurp it. (Really. The only reason it's so popular is it was one of the first exposed to the western market as 'anime' as opposed to being butchered in to a 'cartoon') but that's a rant for another thread.

Like many people here, I watched anime before I ever knew what it was. I was an avid fan of Ronin Warriors and Samurai Pizza Cats (and Sailor Moon, which I was only able to justify with my parents by getting my sister into it XD). Later on, I got into Pokemon (the first few episodes really intrigued me, as they were much different than what airs now) and Dragon Ball. It wasn't until 8th grade that I found a "Japanese Animation Exhibition" event going on at the library and was finally able to match the animation style I loved with a name. Half a year later, I started buying retail series and it took off from there.

I told that story to get to a point: If you count my fandom from when I first loved an anime series, I've been a fan for 17 years. If you count from the time I knew what anime was, I've been a fan for 9 years. (It's been a veeeery long/expensive 9 years)

FWIW, Akahori Gedou Hour Rabuge was the first fansub I downloaded. Less than 3 years of illegal fandom... O.O
