So I was thinking a really weird question and I can't find an awnser so maybe other people could help me out. My question is: what would anime inside anime look like, in a lot of series I see the characters talking about anime so I was wondering what it would look like because if it looks like normal anime wouldn't that make it a reality or normal show for them? weird question but I just wanted to know.

Don't really remember the names in which I've seen anime characters watch anime but..

Most of the time the anime portaryed inside anime either looks just the same or sometimes a bit degraded, like with bad visuals and just still images instead of animation

Watch Shirobako, this show is about the process of making anime (with some cute girls) which is very good and will somewhat answer your question lol.

Definitely Shirobako. It's an anime about making an anime.

In one show I watched there was a restaurant called Magnaria in reference to a show called Wagnaria. I'll see if I can find the picture.

Reminds me of a scene in Sketchbook manga, where the art teacher is drawing a chicken, and it looks like real-life chicken in her picture. But on the manga page, the original chicken looks cartoonish, and not much like real-life chicken.

There are many examples in GINTAMA, they are making fun of some anime though (a parody)

Are you talking about when anime characters are watching anime?

Like that mahou shoujo anime that constantly showed up in Welcome to the NHK?

Idk if this contributes to the topic at all, but in Blood Lad, it's shown that the main character is a massive fan of DBZ lol, he has every manga and he has figures and such.

In general, when the distinction is relevant, the writer should make it obvious whether the characters are watching live action or anime.
For example in Cromartie High School, the furry costume salarymen show is live action, and they also appear outside of their show. But the aforementioned Pururin from Welcome to the NHK is stated in-universe to be an anime series.
