There's nothing to be ashamed about. it's the same thing as watching foreign movies and etc. Unless you're blasting hentai or something in your livingroom lol. I don't recommend doing that then.

If you're watching hentai you should be careful to not be caught by your parents, just like real porn.
Anime on the other hand isn't something to be ashamed of.

I mean, I guess it depends on the type of person you are and what you watch but I'd say you shouldn't be ashamed. If anyone asks what you watch just explain it to them in the most appropriate way possible.

I'm the same, no I do claim I love anime since a year, and it's almost 2 years soon.
But it's always in the middle of weird things. Especially when lolicon and yuri.

don't create a boogeyman that is not there... you're far more likely to be shit talked by another anime fan

depends on what kind of anime this is. obviously if you're watching weird shit, then you should be ashamed. I wouldn't worry about it too much though.

Maybe you should stop watching HENTAI and just explain to your family that you have a waifu

Well what causes the shame? Are you watching controversial kind of anime that if anyone saw it it might make someone raise and eyebrow? Or is it that its japanese cartoons and maybe you think just the concept of watching a cartoon in any shape in form is childish?

Completely understandable, watching chinese cartoons is probably the worst thing you could be doing in your spare time and you should definitely be ashamed of it!

Well. You could always think argue that you don't just watch anime, but also watch other things. Like its normal for people to have geeky hobbies (i.e. vin diesel playing D&D). And here's a list of celebs that like anime :) http://goboiano.com/list/2287-9-famous-people-who-you-wouldn%2527t-have-guessed-like-anime

There is no reason to be ashamed ... I mean if someone judge you about this, who cares ? Also you can try to show them some good anime to explain.

I was like that when I was younger. Let the embarrassment keep me from watching any of it between 13-19. It was a mistake and now I'm ashamed that I let myself be shamed out of doing something I enjoy for a while. If your friends are going to judge you based on a harmless hobby, I think you need to reevaluate how you define friendship.

This guy nailed it. The main people who talk shit to you for watching anime also like anime, so it's usually all in good fun. On that note, it's a shit medium and you should be ashamed.

So are you asking us how to not feel ashamed about it or how to make others understand that it's not that bad?
If you're just ashamed then you can watch it secretly at night on your phone with headphones so that nobody would know and that'll be your guilty pleasure.
But if you want others to be OK with it then introduce them to it and maybe they'll like it as well or just understand that it's not that bad actually.
And the third option is just not to watch it if you're so uncomfortable doing that

Generally, I recommend powering through it. That is, just watch anime until people around you accept it.
You can speed up the process by explaining what anime is, why it is good, and what is good about the anime you're watching at the moment.

Choose time (and use headphones) when you plan on watching something you do not want to show your younger brothers/sisters, like hentai.

Having a door, and a lock on it, is always a plus, but not everybody can afford it.

True, I mean sometimes I also feel the same way but you just need to watch them with your closest friends or someone that also like to watch anime with you I guess..... (cause I sorted started anime because of my bf and she wanted me to watch one with her.......)

It's only embarrassing if you think it's embarrassing......but I understand.
I can't exactly watch a kid trying to kill a teenage girl in the bathroom whilst they're both naked inside a crowded train.

how 'bout you look at it this way.......it's not something that's embarrassing , but rather....... a secret interest that nobody or only a few shall know of ^^

As long as you don't think that the fate franchise is any good and that gahara is the best monogatari girl I think there is nothing to be ashamed of.

I used to be the same way, until I realized there isn't really anything shameful about it. There are a lot of things out there that you can be doing that are actually shameful.

What I do usually:

If it's my parents or best friends, they don't mind. But if I'm watching some weird voices in Anime, Ecchi or H... Better watch alone, close it or get busted.

If it's other people... Dang, no choice but to close.

Sorry to say but that doesn't really make much sense. You love anime but you're ashamed to watch it???
