Anime Market Recovers By Success of Blu-ray

Oricon released a market report of the DVD & Blu-ray media in 2009. The total sales of the DVD and Blu-ray in Japan increased by 6.4% compared to the last year's number. Anime!Anime! attributed the recovery to the expansion of the anime Blu-ray market.

The sales of Blu-ray increased fivefold and Anime & Tokusatsu category made up 60% of it. As a result, the sales of Anime & Tokusatsu DVD and Blu-ray media in 2009 increased by 9% compared to 2008.

2008 71.5 billion yen
2009 77.7 billion yen

The expansion of the anime Blu-ray market brought about a remarkable progress of the anime media manufacturers. Bandai Vidual achieved 5.2% increase in sales and won the top in the market share ranking. The sales of Aniplex increased by 54.2%.

Very good news for the domestic anime market. I'm still quite worried about the shrinking population and aging demographic situation, but for now at least it looks like the anime industry is doing fairly well.

The combined sale of those two is like ;AAAAA;

Well, probably got to thanks the various BD versions of Live Tours (namely Nana, Yukarin and Minorin)

Yummy BD. I have yet to buy anything called BD and it doesn't look like I will this year. Hopefully next year.

I'm not sure this success will continue. A lot of the BD sales this year must have been people upgrading their DVDs to BDs and that won't continue forever. Here's hoping I'm wrong.

Sale of more PS3s recently mean Blu-Ray sales is due to improve again next year.

Blu-ray is really 2 years into its lifespan, and is all ready set to take over the industry.

one has to remember though that the retail price for BD is 10 dollars more or the JP equivalent. that also has a large effect on the sales number. unless they are talking about units sold.
