| i use the Internet for three things, - talking to friends who live far away (main reason i would be sad if i could not use the Internet for a long time...) - news (i don't mind newspapers, but the scope of news is reduced) - fact checking (it's very bothersome if i hear a 'fact' and i can't verify it) so, it's very important to me... but there are so many things that i can do without the Internet, depending on how productive i feel i will never get bored if i am alternating between writing stories/ poems, reading stories/ poems/ guides, studying coursework/ languages, drawing, painting, programming (pointless) stuff, making (bad) music, listening to music, watching movies, games, going out, drinking, cooking, photography, and some more (i've filled external harddrives with my movies and games and music, most of the first two are unwatched and unplayed) i'm a renaissance man |

But you'll look 'pretentious' or a try hard. really? for eighteen years of school, they forced us to carry a book with us at all times, for our personal entertainment... and we didn't even have much time to read, for many of those years now when i go to class at university, i still keep a book in my laptop bag and when i travel i always have a book, as do many many others, to make the journey more enjoyable and it's a common sight to see people reading in cafes and sandwich bars as well as at the beach, or just sitting on benches, if the weather's warm it doesn't look pretentious most people don't even read very intelligent books anyway (i'm not implying that they have to, but it still cheap entertainment by comparison) of course it's not normal to show up to your friend's house, a party, or a sport's event with a book in your hand (keeping something in your bag for the bus journey home is unrelated)... but that's not really because it's 'pretentious', but because you seem antisocial why would one show up to that kind of thing if they did not intend to pay attention to other people? it's 'rude' more than anything else |
