I'm kind of out of my comfort zone here, I haven't watched much horror (only corpse party, I found it gory which I don't think is what horror is all about.) mainly because I feel like crying if anything jumps out and leaves me unable to sleep for the next week. But after living on romance and comedy for months I wanted, a well change.

What would you guys recommend for someone new to horror? What was watching you first horror anime experience like?

Yami Shibai
Wasurenagumo
Shinsekai Yori
Aoi Bungaku
Monster

I'm really bad with horror too! These ones are pretty good but not too scary.

Thanks for replying. :-)
Checked them all out, Shinseki Yori is on my plan to watch and I liked the idea of the Aoi Bungaku Series. Also heard a lot about Monster so I'm bound to watch it whether I like it or not!! xD

Yeah Another is horror. Mix of blood psychological and thriller would be the best way to describe it I believe.

Vampire Hunter D was my first horror anime, followed by Vampire Princess Miyu. I still recommend them both! :)

My current favourite is Higurashi, but I'm watching Shiki, and it may take over Higurashi. Both are amazing.

I've watched Elfen Lied - Its really good, but rather gore not horror. Some horror aspects, but it mainly is just a sad story. With lots of blood.
if you run you get faster to your location

Ahhh I actually have seen higurashi (forever ago) and will rewatch it at some point, are the other seasons for it any good? I really like shiki too <333 slow start, not a fan of the art, but I personally really enjoyed it.
Yeah I'll probably watch elfin lied eventually, it seems like one of them shows every anime guru has to watch.

"Bake Neko" and its sequel Mononoke (stylish exorcisms)
Hakaba Kitarou (more comedic than scary)
Mouryou no Hako (psychological thriller about a serial killer who dismembers his victims)
Ghost Hound (sometimes placed in this category, though I think it's a stretch)
