I prefer anything and everything that works for the type of story being told.

I prefer both, where they have natural talent but need to work hard to achieve it. Example, Baby Steps. The kid obviously has crazy natural talent but he's also one of the hardest workers in any anime I'v seen.

tbh, at that point in HxH I DID NOT GIVE A F. if they used an asspull powerup on GON, this show gave me such a good impression that i was willing to overlook that detail (and the scene that came after was SO WELL EXECUTED that it overshadowed the aspull completly, MADHOUSE played it really smart here, they did not highlight the powerup, instead they focused on something more important ) , and what was most important to me that GON did not break charachter, he stayed impulsive, rash and passionat (meaning that he gave in to the feels).

It wasn't really an asspull, and was explained smartly, that's what makes him smart, rather than a hardworker or just someone who was made to do it.

it was hinted, and tbh, i kinda allways wiched he became a one armed bad-ass afterwords, showing that his actions had no reprocussions was kinda bad from Togachi's part :/ ... but it's still better then all that other OP shounen shit.

Prefer natural talent MC's it bothers me less if they tell hey this guy is OP so don't be surprised when they rekt everyone compared to hard working ones when they work a little hard so they beat like a god like bad guy whit shit stuff like power of will and friendship so hardworkers i some way natural talents to, and natural talents usually have like a background i was trained by my father for 15 years so thats why i am op right now so in some way they are hard workers now to.

Hard working types are always more fun to watch as well as very inspiring, I'm looking at you Ippo.

Natural talent protagonists are the excuse of writers when they're too lazy to develop a character.

It depends, really. If it was a natural-talent protag and they don't put in any effort any more to do stuff, that's just lame imo. If they still nurture the talent and try to improve it even more, that is more entertaining to watch.

well, natural talented type are mostly the envied ones. While hard working types are those inspirational ones.
So instead of being jealous of the talented characters, it would seem better to appreciate the hard workers. Besides....the latter would seem a little more positive and is a little close to reality.

As others have said, why not both? Characters like Ren (Okiku Furikabutte), Nodame and Ei-chan (Baby Steps) tend to be the characters I prefer the most.

Always been a sucker for an underdog. One of the reasons I was so attracted to the One Piece cast, especially Usopp.

So hard working protagonists for me.

It depends on the focus of the series I guess? I mean series which have a naturally talented protag can be a lot more lighthearted if it's about just them doing well (NGNL) and I don't think there's anything wrong with that - not all series have to be serious. But I do think that series which focus on the problems which come with being naturally talented are also a very interesting topic of discussion.

A good example would be Hyouka, which has a naturally talented protagonist with a severe lack of confidence in his ability despite the reader constantly seeing his skill. In that sense the series takes the concept and turns it on its head a bit. Other series like Medaka Box and Sakurasou no Pet Kanojou also deal with this but it's not the main character that is skilled but his love interest, so the series is about average people trying to measure up to the skillful, as much as the skillful unwittingly tear the dreams of those around them down.

I have to say, as boring as it is, that I don't think I can give an answer one way or another. There are series with naturally talented characters who still fail and work hard, as much as there are one's where the 'underdog' wins constantly. If I were pushed I think I typically enjoy an arrogant, skillful main character who gets knocked down so he has to rebuild himself...something like that.

I honestly have no opinion on that. All that I care about is that the protag has a decently interesting and likeable personality, and doesn't seem stupidly op.
