Even though I called him a bastard, I do feel sorry for Mitaka. Think about it. From his point of view: The guy is being all but forced into a marriage with a woman he doesn't love and is, somehow, losing to a guy who can't even hold a steady job. I'm sure he'll end up with Asuna, at least all the signs are pointing in that direction.

Meanwhile, Godai is met at the train station by Kyoko and she slaps him for his stupidity. I don't know if I've said this before but.. damn she's awesome.
"Yes, I have been deprived of emotion. But not completely. Whoever did it, botched the job."

The ending to Godai and Mitaka's rivalry was as lame as I remembered it being. By far the most disappointing aspect of the story is the lack of a sense of closure at the end of a love triangle that, really, never was. Comedy didn't fit the tone of the series right then, so for some random cop to keep interrupting two men set on settling their differences wasn't good. And it would've been powerful if Godai had appeared before Kyoko with his war wounds; showing her that, even though he failed to save her previously, he did care enough to fight for her. A kiss after a scene like that would've been perfect.

(Never let a woman handle something where manliness is required: that's the lesson here. They handle emotions well, but not penis size contests.)

The whole kidnapping saga wasn't great, really. Godai ignored Kyoko's glance in his direction that suggested, 'Stop him taking me!' when Mitaka came to pick her up to take her to the marriage meeting. And it was as disappointing as disappointing can be for Godai not to storm the hotel/meeting, hold out his hand and tell Kyoko to come with him if she loved him - forcing her to make a decision.

Kyoko didn't do anything wrong exactly as Mitaka tried to have his way with her, but I got the distinct impression that - had he tried to kiss her when she started crying - she would've crumbled. (...actually, didn't he try in his car, in the manga?...) Her attempts at stopping the wedding were pathetic, and it wasn't as if she needed to go with Mitaka, or stay with him - she could have caught a train home, or just got a taxi.

She made her own problems by being a hypocrite; doing what she described as a weakness of Godai's and being unable to say no. A little bit of forcefulness and she'd be an easy lay.

Godai did deserve his slap at the end, mind you. Attempting to get put into hospital and, when that failed, getting drunk on the eve of the most crucial day in his - and Kyoko's - life up to yet wasn't very wise...

Nah, a fistfight between two main characters would have been against the spirit of a story that almost always diffuses dramatic tension with comedy. And if Kyoko slapped a drunken Godai (for consistency's sake), how would she have reacted to a battered and bruised Godai? She might have said, "come here, big boy" and cleaned his wounds, but I doubt it!

I suspect that, deep down, she may have appreciated Godai fighting for her, but women tend to think men are stupid for settling everything with violence. And getting his arse kicked the night before an important exam wouldn't have impressed her...

Mitaka didn't try to kiss Kyoko in the manga. I don't think she would have crumbled had he tried; by that point she was looking for a way out and it was only under those extreme circumstances that she found the courage to finally reject Mitaka (who, of course, hasn't yet given up). Even though he's a dick, I did feel sorry for him.

I can't understand why Kyoko can't choose. If she doesn't love Mitaka let him go for F. sake!
As for Godai he does act like a stupid immature kid. Kyoko would have never slapped Mitaka like that

I maybe in the minority who didn't mind Mitaka. Sure, he can be a showoff sometimes and I was annoyed by how pushy he was in the latter episodes, but he's way more mature than Godai is. I started to appreciate his character since he asked Godai to be honest with his feelings with Kozue and stop leading her on. Besides, it was Godai picking on him for the majority of the series rather the other way around. In the end, he was a far cry from the classic rival who plays dirty and stop at nothing to make the woman his.

I also might be in the minority who liked how the conclusion to his rivalry with Godai was handled. It would've been cheesy if they had fought, and yeah, Godai was pretty damn dumb to pick a fight at the night of an exam and deserved to be slapped and told off by Kyoko. I'm rooting for Godai/Kyoko, but at the same time I think she's too good for him and feel sorry for her for putting up with him.

It was a bit ridiculous that a cop kept interrupting, how often have you seen cops in this anime? The only time there's a cop is literally for a cop out, to interrupt the moment, just like when Godai was searching for Kyoko on her trip alone by some hot springs.
Godai did have that slap coming, although the whole reason he was out to begin with was to confront Mitaka for her sake, it wasn't the wisest choice. I'm sure her reaction would have been different if she found him wounded rather than drunk. She did go through the trouble of making him a nice meal after all, can't blame her for being so upset with him. I believe that slap was more to show that she felt stabbed in the heart rather than simply angry with his behavior.

Completely and utterly deserved slap for Godai there.

I have no idea what he was thinking heading off to see Mitaka to "talk" about something and they didn't even talk about anything.

He has extremely important exams the next day (exams that Kyoko is probably even more nervous about) and he is out wasting his time because Asuna said a couple of words to him and suddenly he forgot everything Kyoko said to him and ran off to Mitaka again. Why?! For no reason at all.

And once again he doesn't show up on time to eat with Kyoko when he specifically made the promise. An idiotic move, well deserving of a slap.

The only sympathetic character at this point is Mikata, I do feel really bad for him and how he must feel about this whole thing and the preview for next to me pretty much confirms MikataXAsuna.

These men sure have it tough when it comes to love, especially with the same woman. I wished Mitaka and Godai fought, but not because to settle things, I just want to know who would win in a fight lol
I enjoyed the animation when Godai was slapped, the setting and mood was perfect, I just hope Kyoko doesn't stay mad at him for too long...and let's hope Asuna is "safe" with a drunken Mitaka.

Mitaka has a point, who in their right mind is going to confront his rival in love instead of studying for the final exams tomorrow

Didn't expect that bitch slap from Kyoko

I kinda feel bad for Mitaka. Getting forced into marrying someone who he doesn't really have feelings for. He loves Kyoko, but Mitaka is upset and confused over what Kyoko sees in Godai, he doesn't have much money, can't hold a job but Godai naturally shows he cares without being pushy and forceful. I think Mitaka by the end of the series will grow to love Asuna. Mitaka had a point in calling Godai stupid since he's out drinking instead of studying for his finals, which is why Kyoko slapped him to knock some sense into him. He needs to set his priorities straight.

Godai deserved that slap for being one of the most hypocritical characters ever. How can he even criticise Mitaka for "being indecisive"(even though Mitaka has always made everything clear)when Godai kept Kozue in a "relationship" for something like 3 years??
Godai is still as bad as episode 1, he hasn't developed at all. The only change is him not being a simp 24/7, that's all.

I was appreciating this episode for being a bit more comedic than serious like the last dozen or so episodes but then things got real very fast.
I take back what I said about Mitaka. It’s pretty obvious that this is his true color. This guy ignored and pretended to not see Kyoko's subtle clues so that hard rejection scene was long overdue. But I didn’t expect him to be a sore loser about it! Just give it up already ffs.
I don't get what Asuna-chan sees in Mitaka who's clearly not interested in her (she misread him initially). I hope she won't regret pursuing him.

Godai getting slapped in the face was well deserved. Mitaka isn't just some one dimensional character obviously he's been through so many emotions up until this point. This episode made me love Kyoko 10x more.

First time I saw Ichinose san actually playing tennis!

Wasn't that the same food stall as from some previous episode, can't remember from how far back?

The first time around watching this episode, I really thought the are going to throw hands and settle this like cavemen, but then comedy took over and we got to see really drunken Mitaka san. And Mitaka san can't get his head around why Kyoko san prefers Godai san over him, he is frustrated.

This was at least second time Godai san decides to do something else instead of going to eat dinner made with love, so slap deserved.

Kyoko san was angry but look, does she have teary eyes?

While Mitaka's actions in the last few eps have been dodgy, I definitely see it now as having been a desperate last attempt to escape the marriage arrangements with Asuna. To see Godai faffing about the night before his exams must have been extremely frustrating knowing that he is the only obstacle in escaping an arranged marriage.

Everyone saying Godai is dumb... and everyone is correct.

He has no understanding of priorities. Not to mention how many times has he ditched Kyoko now?

Everything Godai does annoys me. He creates his own problems and blames luck. He throws away opportunities and blames luck. He treats Kyoko like shit, never asked her out once since the first failed date, and expects to win her over with his big plan to graduate, get a job and propose while ignoring everything in between: the actual courtship.

shakuni mama ahh.

the whole mitaka and godai part was hilarious. this anime never made me laugh so much. my cheeks hurt from smiling/laughing.

that slap carried the weight of disappointment and sadness she felt because godai graduating doesn't matter to only him. it concerns kyouko too. very understandable and it sure hurt kyouko to do that. the shock of the slap will sober him right up.

yes it is very sad. i mean mitaka is a perfect man. i mean women will do anything to get a man like that. he's the idea man for every woman. man of dreams one might say. i'm sure mitaka is feeling an unimaginable amount of pain and self-doubt that even after having a degree from a good university, good looks, money, manners, well spoken, knows how to treat women etc. he still couldn't pull kyouko. sometimes i wonder why then i think that maybe because kyouko spent more time with godai and was extremely involved in his life that she started to like him. it was never a fair competition on either side. mitaka has the qualities i mentioned which godai mostly doesn't possess. but godai has his own kind of likeability and kyouko was exposed more to it for being his apartment manager. i'm sure ever since godai's confession kyouko would have been conscious of godai which made her notice him more, not to mention godai has always been the centre of atttention at ikkoku-kan. everything revolved or involved him understandably so he's the main character. so all of this grouped together and made kyouko like him despite if looking objectively being a little inferior to mitaka if seen in a materialistic sense. personality wise he won't lose really. godai has matured quite a bit throughout the show. mitaka put up a real tough fight even conquering his childhood trauma through sheer will, determination and his love for kyouko. it was very admirable. any woman would be happy to have mitaka but the one woman he wants doesn't want him back. that's just how life is. i hope he doesnt go with flow and get married to asuna. its unfair to both of them. they deserve someone who will really cherish and love them.

Well we didn’t get the promised fight between Godai and Mitaka, but the two of them running from that cop sure was hilarious lol, it pretty much took all the edge off the situation too, that is until Godai said he had to graduate for Kyoko, pretty awesome that he could say that to Mitaka, and so confidently at that, Mitaka was stunlocked from that one lol, I guess this is just the kind of thing that can happen when some alcohol is involved.

It’s just a shame that after saying that, Godai has been doing the exact opposite of what he needs to do to graduate in being out so late and also drinking, so what does Kyoko do, who only knows what she sees right in front her? Slaps that boy into next week lol, that was such an epic slap, not completely deserved but it is a fact that Godai made a bad play by skipping out on dinner and not studying, can’t blame Kyoko for that reaction, but man that will be one of those moments I never forget from this series.

Meanwhile, Mitaka is stumped on why Kyoko even gives Godai the time of day, which is kinda interesting for him to think after all this time, but damn that cliffhanger tho, a drunk Mitaka alone with Asuna? Maybe she’ll seal the deal once and for all here, if there was ever a time for her to appeal to Mitaka it would be now, it’s a bit dirty since Mitaka is drunk but I doubt Asuna will do anything on purpose, guess we’ll have to see how it plays out.
