Did he just kill that kid?

The mushi's strategy to have a grandma watch over her unborn grandson is to kill her before she even has kids?

This was unintelligible nonsense.

beautiful beyond words. This thread is a series of me breaking down in awe every time I revisit this episode, the only episode I've ever revisited. Five times now I well up in tears as the story climaxes, but this time at Ginko's soliloquy as he described Shinra's tears flowing without end as he experienced, in empathy, his grandmother's overwhelming sadness. I always got hung up on the power of the final line before, but something about that bit specifically struck a chord with me this time.

It's been six years; I should really, finally, revisit the whole show.

wow, i... that was actually a stunning first episode, where has this anime been all my life???
Can't believe i haven't watched this yet, it's got a lot of the of elements of an anime i love to watch (SOL, Supernatural, Fantasy, magic) im so surprised i haven't come across this sooner.
Honestly rn i'm getting a lot of flash backs to watching The Ancient Magus Bride (my all time favourite anime) with the mysteries, supernatural start and being slowly introduced into this world of fantasy and supernatural.

Reading the prologue of Matsuo Basho's "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" has made me think of Ginko and his lifestyle so I leave Basho's words here for you who are starting on the journey of this anime:

"The moon and sun are eternal travelers.
Even the years wander on.
A lifetime adrift in a boat, or in old age leading a tired horse into the years,
every day is a journey,
and the journey itself is home."

Felt as if I experienced a whole story arc in one episode.

Even after coming in with high expectations, reading reviews and thoughts on the show, this 1st episode lived up to it right off the bat. Looking forward to the rest of this journey.

As Ginko asked the boy to drink from the same cup as his grandmother did, I guess the kid now became a Mushi, too, right? That's why it was said no one never heard about him ever since.

This anime is really something else.
I was entranced at the Renzu's procession scene with the Mushi, the music and atmosphere was too calming.

a child forced to live all alone. a grandmother stuck in limbo, essentially forced to live all alone because no one else can see her. it's all kind of sad. and then them being reunited - or, introduced? - was moving

this had light vibes. or maybe i should say it was "easy" watching. like we were just floating along for the story/ride? it was straight forward and yet still compelling. idk, hard to describe, like what ginko was saying to the kid about his grandmother not understanding mushi that she can't herself see

but i do have to agree with some of the more critical reviews, too. for starters, did he turn that kid into a mushi? if so, why? and if he did, does that open op the possibility that ginko isn't a "good" character? the mushi said in 31 years her grandson will do whatever and they want her to look after him. 31 years? seems rather young for a grandmother but whatever, i'll let it go. i'm more interested in why they wanted her to look after him? just because he could create creatures? how did the mushi know the future? hmmm

and what's he doing with that wine dish? thief

(no spoilers, please)

that all said, i really enjoyed it. 7 or 8/10 first episode

This really brings me back to Discovery Channel days in fourth grade. Much more stranger and psychedelic than what younger me used to watch, but still has that lingering nostalgic feeling buried deep inside nonetheless.

I think I just found my new best friend for Saturday nights at 2 AM :)

Started to tear up near the beginning and spent the whole episode struggling against it until I broke down in the closing credits. I am always in awe of how beautiful and profoundly lonely this episode is.

I could only offer to answer some of these. The kid won't turn to mushi, I believe that's a whole ritual banquet process to it that needs to happen. Plus Ginko mentioned that this is just a celebratory sake (that being true in that situation).

If the grandma was 10 or 12 (she could pass for 13, Asians look young for their age lol) when the incident happened, in 31 years she would be 40. Maybe she married young, say 18 or 20. That would give her child enough time to grow up and marry young and have a child when the grandma is 40ish.

The mushi would want this kid to be protected because he can literally create mushis (implied that he can generally create anything "basic" to life) by drawing them. Now that could change the mushi-nature ecology considerably, without making the kid popular (as long as the kid lives in isolation), which answers another criticism offered by somebody a few posts up.

The wine dish, is just a souvenir LOL

Princess Mononoke vibes and quite artistic handling of Japanese mysticism. Easily a 9/10 for me. Apparently superior to some anime with similar premises.

Yeah it's pretty good but you might want to watch some more episodes before rating it a 9 from just one episode lol. I will never understand the urge to rate something very high or low based on one or two episodes.

Thanks for the heads-up. If you go to my ratings page, you will find that I haven't rated it yet. I just meant that EP1 is a 9 on my book. I am not the type of reviewer who gives very high scores to anything remotely likeable.

Rewatched for the third time.

What I find odd that I missed before...a lot of episodes are actually allegorical and may have some meaning or purpose behind them. For this one, what made the kid an outlier or different from everyone else was seen as a curse, a burden by his own elders. I know a bit about how that feels, with your parents or guardian trying to protect you just because you're different, when what they're doing is stifling what makes you, you.
But why did the grandma do that exactly? because she lost a part of herself (childhood) and forgot her promise to preserve what is especial. All of this just leads to the sad situation of the kid being alone with unique abilities he is forbidden from using.

I don't think drinking the water would kill the kid, because a. he's special b. the ritual did not kill his grandma and the only reason she split was because the ritual was interrupted by a crow. She went on to live a perfectly healthy life although a part of her was missing until Ginko came and helped them recover it.

i got my ex boyfriend hooked to this show, he wouldn’t stop talking about how much of an impact it had on him. the soundtrack paired with the visuals and the simple teachings behind each episode, he loved it. he died on 01/07/23. he wanted to live so badly. i don’t think he made it past the 8-9th episode because of how he loved to rewatch it. rest in peace jasper, you wanted to live so badly yet your life was cut short. i will never be able to make it past the first few seconds of the opening without crying my heart out.

The atmosphere of this show is so incredibly soothing, it's almost therepeutic.

Real talk tho it'd be pretty weird to meet your grandma in a form that's younger than you.

Fantastic first episode in ALL aspects, starting with a serene and beautiful opening, as well as what would come after it.

Narrative that attracts attention and a world with a lot of history to be explored, and in this world of Mushi's we follow Ginko, the protagonist. Mushi's master is, in fact, a master - as the episode goes on he shows himself to have vast knowledge about "creatures".

In addition to the magnificent character, there was the plot with Shinra, the boy who created life by drawing with his left hand, which is something rare and this is better covered in the episode. There was also the plot twist involving his grandmother, which further enriched such a beautiful narrative. Without a doubt, a perfect start and one that makes me have high expectations for what is to come, I hope they are met.
