Oniisama E...

A quality series that was a bit too melodramatic at times but explored some very interesting themes such as drugs, bullying, etc all wrapped up in a shoujo coming of age tale. I went into this series with maybe too high expectations, because I admit to being a bit let down by this show. To summarize I think I really never connected with many of the characters and this isn't because I'm a guy watching a female oriented show (I've related to female characters before, after all) so much as it is the way the story was told. I think the melodramatics were a bit much for me at times. That said, it was great to finally watch one of the shows that inspired Utena and made me appreciate that show even more.

I've also finished Yawara a while ago. I'm so glad it got fansubbed - it certainly deserves it. It was a very long watch since I had to collect episodes over the years, but it was always easy to gen into when I got back to it. It's a fantastic shojo production (even though manga is seinen). Here's a wonderful piece from Yuki Saitos concert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXxZ6-3fIiU&list=PL7AE4DE83C53A1ABC&index=88 .

Atlanta Special felt just a bit cheaper and rushed in comparison. In particular, Sayaka lost a bit of her charm (maybe she was closer to the manga version). Overall, I think the TV series on its own had quite a good closure. I had tears in my eyes.

Just finished Mysterious Cities Of Gold. It is definitely aimed at children. But even so, it's done well considering its age and target age. I remember people discussing it back in the 80's when it was on Nickelodeon. Unfortunately I could not find a subtitled version so I had to watch the dub. That was barely adequate. But the story is non-stop action/adventure and the characters, at least the main ones, were interesting. It sure beats some of today's anime for story and development. I rated it a 7.

Just finished Area 88 (1988).

This anime is just EPIC!
Gorgeous artwork , animation and deep plot. One of the truly intelligent and meaningful anime I've watched.

By the way, I watched the US licensed version where they put OVA1 and 2 together into the first episode and remove some violent and controversial scenes. I want to hunt down the [ACR] fan-subbed version but no luck. :(

Should have known since part 1 and 2 were combined that Area 88 was edited. I hate discovering this after I've watched something. Seems like this happened a few months ago while watching Wrath of the Ninja as well. 'Tis a shame, but I'm glad to know now, at least.

From 1984, Choujin Locke, it shows it's age but is fairly good. I also have the 3 OVAs and will comment on those as I watch them. Decent story, but is a little disjointed in spots.

From 1969, Senya Ichya Monogatari is a very interesting and humorous romp through the 1001 Nights. I laughed quite a bit and it is pretty good for as old as it is. Be warned, there is lots of nudity in this early Tezuka, Osamu work.

Here's a real oldie from 1958 with work by later legend Rintaro. It's called Hakujaden (The White Snake). It is a Chinese folktale set in China with Chinese characters and some animals ala Disney. It shows it's age, but I liked it. Love wins in the end.

It's from the "Animerama-trilogy" as well as 'Belladonna of Sadness' and 'Cleopatra: Queen of sex'. All of them are interesting, experimental works.

edit: and let's not forget about the Hendrix-like music in 1001nights...

I must be the only one watching older anime right now. From 1991, Roujin Z is a serio-comical look at the medical profession and military applications of technology. Written by Otomo, Katsuhiro it is hilarious in spots but will make one think, too.

From 1967, this kids movie ala Disney: Shounen Jack to Mahou Tsukai. Its like a Disney movie from the 40's or 50's. Simple story of boy who battles the evil witch and saves his animal friends and liberates a bunch of kids turned into harpys by the witch.

From 1991, Ushio no Shoumen Daare or Who's Left Behind is another film in a long line that deals with the effects of WWII on children in Japan. As such, it is not a standout, but is a decent watch.

From 1987, Yami no Purple Eye is basically a set of stills set to some rather poor singing. This is supposed to tell a story, but I could see no story in it.

Watched both They were 11 and Plastic Little, both were quite fun in their own ways. I really enjoyed the claustrophobic feel to the atmosphere in They were 11, and although there was really not alot of story in Plastic Little, it does have some nice artwork and some LOL worthy bits of sillyness. Also, both have Norio Wakamoto in them, so that was a bit of a surprise! Also, They Were 11 is worth viewing if only

I finished Galaxy Express 999 finally! I was disappointed in the beginning, maybe because I like Matsumoto's works.. The protagonist was obnoxious and the first half of the series was boring! However, there was great development in his character and Matsumoto communicated great messages through it! That's why I gave it a 7!

While it's not exactly old OLD school, I finished this war movie called The Glass Rabbit this morning. It's rather bland and generic, with one dimensional characters and some cheesy scenes and morals, especially at the end (though I will admit, I'd rather go with this than OTHER anime which I dare not name). But I definitely appreciated little things like the citizens helping Toshiko when she needed it, proving that the worst of some can bring out the best in many, which happens in real life more often than people think, especially in times of crisis. I also liked the twist where a little baby sees the war planes before everyone else does.

Tomorrow I'm gonna watch Ushiro no Shoumen Daare. I found it on YouTube with English captions.

I just finished the Dawn arc of the 2004 Phoenix (Hi no Tori) adaptation by Ryousuke Takahashi. Just viewing arc alone, I can see why people hail this as Tezuka's life work. Had absolutely lush character designs from the wonderful Akio Sugino (one character in this arc looked like a cross between Ben Gunn and Gray from Treasure Island), very gripping emotional drama coupled with excellent pacing, writing, and a rather touching and hopeful climax. While the actual show isn't old school itself, the original source material is, so I hope this counts. I'm definitely gonna hunt down the rest of the Phoenix related content, and view the rest of the 2004 shows arcs later. I think I'm beginning to gather why Tezuka is considered the God of Manga.... thanks to superb stuff like this and Kirihito Sanka.

I just finished the 1985 film, Fairy Florence by Sanrio. Absolutely little trip with beautiful animation and excellent usage of music, including three stunning segments, which are Bach's Little Fugue in G minor, Waltz of the Flowers and Berlioz's Symphony no.5. To me, it felt like a Japanese version of Fantasia, with no live action segments in between segements (I don't mind those segments, as they give a chance for the viewer to relax after seeing a stunning segment, but I can see why they would effect that films pacing for some), and features a story not to dissimilar to Gauche, albeit, the latter is more naturalist, while the former is more fantastical, but thats all well and good for moi.

Heres hoping Discotek picks this bad boy up, along with the blu for Sea Prince and the Firechild.

Though the usual source, BakaBT. It's 800MB, so I'm sure someone could upload it to a DDL site. It's quite a nice rip, since it looks almost HD-ish, so like Nobodys Boy Remi, it's been we'll kept.

I wouldn't say Gall Force is not a popular show, maybe to the modern fandom, but it was very popular then and still is among Old Schoolers. Around here we also had some conversations about it before too which also brought up it's popularity.

Not technically "Old School" since it ran from 1994-1995, but Ginga Sengoku Yuuden Rai is a 52 episode space opera with swordplay as well. Unfortunately, there seems to be only one copy available on the net and everyone has the same one. The reason for the "unfortunately" is that this is ripped from Chinese DVDs and the English subtitles are terrible, the worst I have ever seen. Names change from episode to episode and even in the same episode. Sentence structure in the first half of the series is almost unreadable. It gets better in the second half, but the name problem persists. Still, with all that, I gave this series a 7. It is almost non-stop action and the characters are all likeable, with very few exceptions. Space battles are a little laughable as the ships are using cannons that actually shoot projectiles. LOL. But, it is fun and worth the watch if you can stand the subtitle problem.

I've really been wanting to watch this series but I can't stand the subtitles. Most people who have seen it say the anime itself is actually pretty good. Might have been an 8/10 for ya if the subtitles were better.

I've offered to help fansub the series as editor or timer but nobody seems to be interested just yet. I'll bet they get around to it eventually. Perhaps Live-eviL, they've done a lot of Leiji space operas and the leiji group seems to be close to finished with everything aside from Queen Millennia.

Recently finished Kurenai Sanshiro (Judo Boy) after stalling on it for a bit. Was mostly pretty entertaining, each episode was basically a mini-kung fu movie, with a few 2-3 parters in there. The aesthetics and animation in general looked pretty strange to me even as a mainly retro viewer, just the artwork (weird use of color) and how the characters moved around was very unique looking. I guess if anything I would have to compare it to 70s Dynamic Planning shows, but it looked different than that too. There was some weird live action footage in there for explosions too. Overall it looked like a very experimental project. It was also quite brutal which is guess is to be expected of anime at the time, and had a downer ending. People dying constantly and the main character taking life without blinking twice for the most part.

Good watch, would definitely recommend it to people into this kind of stuff.
