Some background: I started really watching anime around the beginning of summer 2013. Before this I watched anime off and on growing up. Anyways I'm pretty much new to all of this. Can anyone recommend any good mysteries or thrillers?

Hey, haven't seen you around the club much. If you just enjoyed, welcome. If not, welcome anyways.

We actually have a chart of stuff the club endorses.

As far as specific mystery/thrillers go, from the chart, I'd recommend:
Monster
Jin-Roh
Paranoia Agent
Gankutsuou

Is there any anime that has a MC trapped in some kind of environment survival similar to Life of Pi?

And, is there any show that has to take care of a little child? I know Usagi Drop has one and has been on my mind in a while to watch.

Kure-nai's plot seems good. But while I saw that one review by Ranivus on the show, I noticed that it has some incest episode or some other bad things about it on the show so that kinda don't want me to watch it which is shocking.

Noticed Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai before, but i noticed it has the romance tag on it and that doesn't interest me that I removed it off my ptw list.

While not exactly on the depth of Usagi Drop, you can try these:
Chibi Devil
Daa Daa Daa

Not sure if you'd like them though. This looks like something you'd enjoy more haha.

Chibi Devil- I can't really watch that show because I don't like the art since I not like the cutesy artstyle type.

Daa Daa Daa lol at the title. Looks okay, but I definitely not watching 78 episodes of that. Though, the manga chapters is good and the plot seems decent. May look to see if there are any scans of the chapter. If any website hass all the chapters, I may bookmark it to see if I really want to read it.

No on the last link. >_>

The incest is a plot element, but there's no sex or anything, not implied or anything. If I said anymore it would be spoilers, but don't worry about it.

Shiki is really good
As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.

Posting this on the main page, too:

Would someone do me the honor of recommending an anime or manga with a cast of great, likable characters that develop with interesting interactions between themselves?

Obviously, this is pretty subjective, but many of you probably have an idea of what I dislike.
The key is that I want to actually care about the characters. This is uncommon for me. I only really feel that way about GTO, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, and Berserk.

The central relationship of Kure-nai perhaps, R.O.D the TV has characters that give me the feels, Rainbow is a prison drama with characters that go through a lot of shit, but the 2nd cour is basically one big coda since the anime only adapts half the manga and Touch has some great interplay, especially in Part 1 (first 27 episodes). Maybe those might be up your alley.

I saw the first episode of Rainbow three years ago, and I still really want to read the manga. Although, my Japanese friend who loves it says that it went through publication hell. Apparently, it switched serializations, and went though different editors and personal problems of the author, so some of the content got affected by these situations. He says it is still good, but ended up not as great as it could have been because of things like poor readership.

Honestly, I don't think that's a proper recommendation since you want to care for the characters. That's probably the last thing you want to do with this series.

You appear to like manly anime and battle shounen. So as far as that goes, I might suggest a few:

Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Sakigake Otokojuku
Berserk (1997)
Space Adventure Cobra (1982)
Saint Seiya (1986)

Heyyyy
That's not the right assumption!
I'm actually probably too empathetic, so Zaregoto could crush me if I like the characters.

Any recommendations for things I should drop/delete from my PTW or On-Hold anime lists?

The possible time I can put into anime has decreased, and so has my will to watch things that I won't truly enjoy, so I'm trying to cut down my backlog. I want all the time I spend watching anime to seem worth it.

Your PTW list has a lot of obscure stuff I don't have much dirt on so those I'm neutral on, but really the only really bad one I can think of is Umineko which I'm told the anime is horrendous but the visual novel is this extremely dense puzzle people spend months deciphering and such. For On-Hold stuff, I think I'd say cut Bobobo and read the manga perhaps because it's longer, more extreme and looks better in manga form, maybe Gundam Wing but it seems conditional since you're big on Gundam, so unless you want the spectrum of things, Wing is on the lower end with most around here. Panty and Stocking if you enjoy the first couple episodes you might as well finish it, but for me it's "that Gainax product I hate". If I get really picky, some people don't think Fantastic Children is anything incredible, Ginga Nagareboshi Gin is like a 7 but some of the content gets a bit repetitive and there's a crap ton of convenient plot devices, a decent watch but it may get tiresome. Stuff you may want to read the manga for instead like Nube, Kyou Kara Ore Wa, etc perhaps? Unless you are fixated on Tomino as well, Gainer is supposedly weak. If any of that helps I guess.

Gundam Evolve is pretty meh. There is little time consumption, so little harm done even if you don't enjoy it, but it's not something I would recommend really. Just a series of shorts with bad CGI Gundam flying around. Gundam ZZ is a tough call. It's not very good, but I still think it's a fun ride. I guess I can say this. If you enjoy UC stuff to the point where you think you'd enjoy a 47 ep series that adds virtually nothing to the story and is mostly reliant on goofy comedy, but has enough charm to make it still decent, give it a go. Otherwise, it's not worth it. For Tomino space comedy stick with L-Gaim instead, it's so much better.

I thought Tekkaman Blade was weak. Most seem to love it but I just couldn't get into it. Too thick with melodrama and the animation was terrible. Second half was a snoozefest with more angst and screaming than mecha action.

The Bastard OVA is whatever. If you already like Bastard it's probably worth watching, but other than that you aren't missing anything.

Other than that... your PTW is pretty concise and solid. Most of that stuff I've seen is worth watching and ranges from good to awesome. However, if you find Tomino and Takahashi to be to your liking, I have my doubts that you won't end up watching the rest of their stuff, haha. Just stay away from Victory Gundam.

Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto

This is something that looks like an awesome samurai series, but the reality is there are actually very few decent pure bread samurai stuff in anime. No memorable moments or characters and only one or two good fight scenes. Story tries to be real history, except all the crap was actually caused by some cursed skull and I think it ended with some flying doomsday fortress. Well, maybe that actually makes it sound even better, but believe me - there are very few good points to this series. Just watch Kenshin, Shigurui, Samurai 7, Samurai Champloo, Sword of the Stranger, even Basilisk and Ninja Scroll (movie), if you haven't already. No point wasting time with this.

Shin Jeeg

Well, it's 13 eps, but it's really worse than the new Getter OVAs, Shin Mazinger or even Mazinkaizer SKL. Just watch those first if you must see this kind of stuff. Might be worth it if you know old Jeeg, which I didn't. Sort of cool, but generic visuals make it low priority stuff.

Dunbine

Uhh, it's sort of like an old Gundam show. Not as goofy and dumbass as ZZ, but more awkward than the good stuff. It seems quite ok at first with the fantasy setting, but it'll jump things halfway and gives the entire story a very fringe type vibe. Better just watch Gundam, unless you only have something like Victory, ZZ or X left.

Sorry if I don't recommend anything for vilmarbf and Ahmad317, but judging by our lists, we just don't like the same stuff so I prefer to just let someone else's recommend you animes :)

I have one question for about everyone who watched GINTAMA and I think this thread is about right to do so since it's a recommendation thread.

Gintama is in the top 10 on MyAnimeList and seems to be extremely popular in all type of anime watchers, to weeaboo to even elitists. (exaggeration implied but it means that a large categories of people like it)

I watched about 10 episodes of the anime.
I'm a huge comedy fan... I mean I can't stop watching School Rumble and Ken Akamatsu is one -if not the- of the mangaka I like the most.

But I didn't laugh any time.
I mean, I DID get the jokes, but to me they were so cliché and predictable. I really don't like the kind of joke when:
A does something funny
B gets angry and all chibby-like and have to actually scream what A is doing like we didn't see it
If you know what I mean.

In other words, it seems everything but subtle.
Don't mistaken me, I DID get the parodies jokes but they were all "meh" to me, easy ones.

So I just dropped it, but then I heard a lot of fans always saying "It gets good after episode 30".
My first reaction was like "EPISODE 30?! Seriously I won't lose my time watching 30 episodes in hope that I will like this".

And that's where am I now, asking myself, so I'm asking YOU who watched Gintama WHAT SHOULD I DO?!

GinTama takes time to hit its stride for comedy, and even longer for the action arcs (but those are few and far between and much later down the line) but when it does, it really sticks. If you have the patience, it's worth it.

Just watched it already. gintama has over 200 episodes. as why you didn't laugh. I think is that you are used to that kind of jokes involving a Bokke and a tsukommi. so it's not that funny anymore. but believe me. it's worthy to give a try. gintama has a kind of solw pace, but when you least expected you will be laughing your ass off everytime.

Acchi Kocchi is extremely... anime. It has a high cute factor in the visual department, and is technically romance, but doesn't really move much plotwise. It's slice of life - with some comedy thrown in.

Go with Aria, it's both cute and meaningful, other than that, you could check out Hidamari Sketch, Kamichu is quite a show, despite being fairly underwatched on MAL, you seem to like some thematically similar Ghibli works, so it could end up being quite a pleasant surprise for you. Maybe Hanasaku Iroha, which drags on a bit in the second half but is absolutely gorgeous visually. Non Non Biyori is a neat little surprise from the previous season, you could check out that too. People recommend Tamayura, but personally, I didn't like it too much, maybe you will get more out of it than I did.

If you want to experiment, try out some magical girls show, since you seem to value Cardcaptor Sakura, try Princess Tutu, quite a few Precure shows have visually appealing character designs while having other value.

Why not check out Ghost in the Shell SAC? It's a different interpretation of the setting compared to Oshii's take in the movies. Also, you've seen TTGL but not Gunbuster, that's something you will probably want to change in the near future. Gankutsuou is great too, an exotic sci-fi take on the original Monte Cristo novel. How about Simoun, an outstanding coming of age story masked as a lesbian slumber party with questionable CGI. Since you liked Cowboy Bebop, why not try the other most western stylized show, The Big O?

Hope that helped somewhat.
