I love old school anime, when I was living in the country side in Niigata almost 2 years ago, I lived right by a DVD rental store and rented all kinds of old school anime like Majokko Megu-chan, Mach Go Go Go, Cutie Honey, Casshan, Gatchaman, the original Cyborg 009 and so on. |

Good to see Casshan robot hunter and Gatchman fan here. I suppose you mentioned the original 70's of those two shows. Have you watched the 1994 OVA remake of Casshan and Gatchman by Yasuomi Umetsu? Those are even better than the original from the 70s. I tried to watch the 2008 Casshern Sins remake but it sucks so bad because of cheap CG/digital. :P I noticed that you are in Japan. Can you still able to rent those obscure VHS and laser-disc OVAs beside from mainstream old classic series? |

Well, some places you can rent VHS, but laser-disc you can buy at certain stores like at book offs or hard offs. I actually got a free laser disc player at one of my old schools and I got all of Sailor Moon season 1 on LD for like $5 at a store lol. I saw the 70s and 90s series of those tatsunoko classics. I have also seen Tekkaman and Blade kicks sooooooooooo much ass. |

Except it went through the same process as Kill Me Baby; drawn on paper then traced and colored on computers. There was nothing special about how it was produced. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6456 Try searching for digital paint. nekovision said: This may be true for early 2000 made anime. Most recent production of anime were mostly using advanced computer software line tools to vectorized and generated in-between. Probably only key frames were drawn on papers. This video shows that in-betweens were done on computers. That doesn't explain the legion of in-betweeners I see in the credits after I watch an episode. That video shows they were using software to interpolate the in-between movements. CGI coloring is fine. But modern artists seem to be taking too much shortcut from constantly evolving software tools. Yes. To me, the only anime production method that can be considered as Truly traditional hand-drawn is to be done on physical hand-painted cel from the old days. If you want to broaden your view of "tradition" you can say there were also hand-drawn elements done on Pixar's 3D films as well since artists has to first drawn different character's perspective on papers first before scan them to construct 3d models. Same thing can be say on most 2D American animations. |

Automated in-betweening isn't even the norm in Japan. It is was, there wouldn't be as much outsourcing to Korea and China since they typically handle the grunt work like clean up and in-between animation. I don't see how only cel animation can be considered as traditional since cels are merely used to facilitate inking and coloring of the animation along with stacking different layers of drawings. What really defines traditional animation is the fact that each frame is drawn by hand, that's all. |

The animator's job hasn't changed. Back in the 70s they would draw on paper then have someone else (usually not an animator) to transfer those to cels. The only difference now is that those drawings are scanned then traced and colored with a program instead. |

God it's refreshing to see another person who gives the rightful respect to this wonderful anime. My favorite decade for anime is the 80s but Ashita no Joe is the best anime of all time imo. I'm saying this and I'm only at ep 36. I read the manga but yeah ANJ is pretty great. I don't know about "of all time" but it's definitely the original shounen. Where do you think the "strong shounen protag with an unbeatable attitude" stereotype even came from anyway? Joe is the first, and still the best. *resists extremely tempting urge to bash on Ed Elric from FMA for being a bland, uninspiring take on the type of character inspired by Joe* If you want some other great old stuff check out the World Masterpiece Theatre shows, especially those directed by Isao "godfather of modern anime" Takahata. Akage No Anne 3000 Leagues In Search of Mother Heidi: Girl of the Alps Drop me a comment on my profile or something if any of those shows appeal to you. I can break Takahata's stuff down for you and give you some good old shows/manga in general. |

How can you not say that's not crazy? Plus, remember why Rikiishi ended up in juvie to begin with? He assaulted a dude talking shit about him after a fight. Rikiishi doesn't take shit from anybody. Joe is crazy, but at the same time, he was also a total bastard, especially to Yoko and Danpei at times. As for the anime being better than the manga, I disagree. Both Ashita no Joe 1 and Ashita no Joe 2 anime totally got the fight with Carlos all wrong. The manga version of Joe vs Carlos is certainly one of my favorite fights. But the theme song is certainly one of my favorites. ------ But if possible, I recommend people to see the original Japanese version of Mach Go Go Go. In the English translations, besides the names, the dialog is accurately translated word for word which really impressed me when I compared the two. The original Tekkaman was canceled half way into it sadly. It is very "disco," and I personally enjoyed it. Despite how colorful the art was, it was also a dark series. But Tekkaman Blade brought it to a new level of potential. I also recommend, Go-Lion, the series that Voltron was based on. It is SUPER violent and dark! Now one of my favorite animes of all time. Transformers Headmasters is a fun series to me as a fan of that franchise. It took more creative freedom in making the series more Japanese in context to humor, but I didn't like how they did not modulate the voices for the robots to make them sound more robotic. Yoroiden Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors also has a very special place in my heart for every reason. It was also one of the first series I watched as a fan. Naturally Macross and Zeta Gundam have to be on this list of great classics. To me, Zeta Gundam is the best anime of all time. Aura Battler Dunbine is a great title of Tomino and is really one of the few titles that earned him the monicker Kill Em All. An oav I enjoy is Bari Bari Densetsu, it is 2 episodes, but the original manga went on pretty long. It was made by the creator of initial D before he made that. But I am also big on the songs of old school animes. Last, I personally have a hard time bringing myself calling anything from the 1990s "old school. "Makes me feel old if I did. It was when I finally got into anime, but I was also enjoying titles from the 1970s and 1980s as well. But the 1990s was when I was also watching the "in" anime at the time like Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Magic Knight Rayearth, Marmalade Boy, Yuu Yuu Hakusho and so on. It really connects me to my youth. So I find it strange people tell me that they consider Cowboy Bebop "old school" when it still feels new to me. Hell, Evangelion still feels new to me. But I do love the seiyuus that made it big in the 1990s like Hayashiba Megumi and Midorikawa Hikaru. They were everywhere to some degree and even though they had recognizable voices, they could capture their characters. |

Guess I really need to go back and re-watch Ashita no Joe. It’s one of my childhood nostalgia. I used to watch with my older brother and all I remember is the final part where he died fighting the champion and gave his glove to his GF which is kind of depressing. ParaParaJMo said: The original Tekkaman was canceled half way into it sadly. It is very "disco," and I personally enjoyed it. Despite how colorful the art was, it was also a dark series. The 90s Tekkaman Blade is indeed dark and depress where siblings in outer space got genetic modified into weapons and killing each other. :P Tekkaman Blabe OVA 2 (1994). I don’t care what ppl say it’s cheesy compare to the first serie. I love this series. It’s full of cool battle, and hot chicks during “tek setter” transformation. :P ParaParaJMo said: Yoroiden Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors also has a very special place in my heart for every reason. Zeta is indeed dark compare to the original mobile suit but it’s not my favorite.(I like very much still) My favorite series will always be 0080 War in The Pocket. It is light hearted and really sad at the end. The Haruhiko_Mikimoto character design for this OVA is a plus too. :) 0083 Stardust Memory is aslo my favorite series and it has the best production value both artistically and animation wise. :) ParaParaJMo said: But I am also big on the songs of old school animes.
