I didn't take note of Killer Queen, but Mikan's design is closer to that of the manga, which was quite different than the anime.

While her design in the first anime (and novel reprint) was basically bikini armor, her manga outfit was something one might actually expect an adventurer to wear, and offered full coverage (no bare midriff as in this sequel anime). That was also apparently more in line with her design in the original novel print.

It was interesting there was quite a bit of material in the "recap" portion that was never in the first anime (the "real world" segments aside from the short scene where he shut down the game server).

The change to Mikan is understandable, I suppose. But Killer Queen (only in the OP/ED so far) kind of looks like a proper lady now. It was great how in the first season she had a design that matched her personality, not fond of this new look for her at all. Don't think I like the Yu redesign either, and his suit seems kind of blueish compared to the straight black of last season, which I also don't like.

Looks like EVERYONE got recast except for Hakuto/Tsuda. Not many comparisons to make so far, but at least Luna sounds much less annoying than she did last season.

The new IRL flashback bits were interesting but probably won't make much sense until later, with more backstory.

Most of the episode was a recap of S1E1, except worse in just about every possible way.

And then sudden cut to "now" at the very end. Overall just seems designed to confuse new watchers and annoy previous watchers.

Keeping an eye on this, since I quite liked S1, but not a good first impression.

Like others have said, new Maou's design is weird (and I prefer the old look). They shouldn't start with season 1 recap. I already have rough understanding of manga, and I know it's not as exciting as season 1, however this recap is quite disappointing.

I didn't expect to find the biggest disappointment of the season so quickly. I was really looking forward to the anime but the first episode was almost unwatchable. Currently I just hope that this studio never produces an anime again.

I mean, the series was never that great, but season 1 was a fun watch regardless. This first episode of season 2 seems to just vomit all over season 1. I'll give it one more episode out of morbid curiosity, wondering how low they can take this, but that's probably about it.

The worst thing of all of this is: This new studio, Gekko, made Jii-san Baa-san Wakagaeru. If you look at it, you'll notice that one is an anime whose character design is much more similar to that of Maou-sama Retry S1 than this load of rubbish they've made for S2.

Season 1 was nothing to be crazy about, but it was decent with some funny moments.
This....what is this garbage?

It makes you wonder for 75% of the episode if this is actually a sequel or a remake....just to confirm at the end that, I guess, it is a sequel? But with a glorified recap of the 1st episode of the original series, with some extra scenes.

And man, what the hell is this animation? It's absolute junk, why did they even change the art style and character design, just to manage to make it worse than the series that aired 5 years ago?

I do not get this, this is the kind of project that makes you wonder if there's money laundering happening besides the scenes, otherwise I cannot comprehend how whoever was in charge of production, directing etc thought this episode 1 makes sense the way it ended up.

Well, this is not particularly confidence inspiring. In a world of almost only 12 episode seasons these days, spending an entire episode to recap a season we can just go watch is a huge waste. The art style change is also somehow a downgrade despite obviously being more modern. Even if the animation quality is higher, almost every character is significantly uglier. Sure, the first season looked like it was animated in the 90s or early millennium, but it somehow still looked better (with the exception of the MC's mullet, of course).

I'm not so sure. Right at the end he's back in the onsen.

I thought the animation, colours and story have been thickened out in this series.
facial expressions in R are far superior to the original and it was also nice to see some of the backstory

My gripe is the music is too loud in some parts which makes hearing the characters difficult.

I don't mind a recap episode to start. The low quality of the art & anime was a bit disheartening. The creators are also increasing the fanservice.
Hope they don't mess up the quirky isekai that I love.

Was super excited for this new season after years. I often go back and watch the first many times. My opinion on the first episode is kind of bad, or lackluster so to say. It's good to do a recap, however I think some of the core elements not just from the manga but the first season were lost. For example the demon in the recap just seemed weird with how the MC attacks. I think that the non moving and auto attack are good, however I would like to see more like the first season where it's like "first skill" then it going off. I will still watch the rest but I think it can be better in the end. Honestly, the first season had me wanting more like that, so a different studio is hard to process.

So they change studios and they need a recap telling the story in a slightly different way? It took the last few minutes to move on with the story. Characters aren’t drawn anyway near as well as S1, they’re more cartoonish looking. At least S1 characters were drawn well. I hope the story actually continues linearly but all these XX and XXX references are concerning.

I'm not at all thrilled to have to watch a recap with a smidgen of something that's new at the end. To be honest I don't like the way a lot of the characters look now either. Admittedly that could just be first impression bias, but almost all the girls have the same rounded and goofy looking faces. Killer Queens hair makes her look silly. She looks more like a token female knight than a delinquent now. I don't know which one was the original art style, but I prefer the look of Season 1. Similar to what happened with High School DXD. The characters looked less serious and more goofy. Don't know which art style was the original there either, but the newer ones are more goofy looking.

WHY. So basically, the beginning of the episode is the same as the beginning of the show so i though "oh great a remake". then it starts changing it up, so then I'm interested, then it skips ahead. let's hope it continues from the last season, and doesn't skip to the sequel (but considering MAL shows the manga this is based off to be the sequel manga, I may have to go find and read the manga)

Only decent thing done is they added a little bit back story of Hakuto Kunai but giving it a separate episode as OVA would be far better than putting in season 2.
Although season 1 art style was not good but it was still better than season 2 new art style.

The animation definitely seems like a downgrade compared to the first season but the writing might be actually better. The tie in was pretty smooth and we even got some real world backstory bits.

What even is this, this is bad in so many ways.
It's a terrible recap episode
they have DRASTICALLY changed the style
when i first saw the demon lord i thought the aspect ratio on my screen was off, but no unfortunately it was a badly designed demon lord and after re-watching the first season going into the second to see him looking like that, just left me confused. most of the new character designs look wider for some reason (hence why i thought my aspect ratio was off), and just seem very bland and ugly.
the animation is worse as well and the animation in the first season wasn't fantastic to begin with so this is just way worse.
i hope to god this isn't some DEI bull shitery cause they made all the girl less attractive and the guys just look ugly as well IMO

How's neet & other old world characters relevant? neet does say odd things tho.

they turned decently good anime i liked into a generic bad isekai, yes first one had its own fair share of problems, but it was at least somewhat tryin to be serious which is what directly gave its comedic relief its value, i don't like this, this show didn't need a rework to begin with, either get it a new season or give a rework to something like tokyo ghoul or at least something that deserves it as much, but idk if i would like this studio to do it if they did this with this anime

So when i saw that this sequel was coming out i wasnt exactly excited but i was willing to give it a shot , i binged season 1 and had a decent time animation was nothing special but not bad , neither was the story.

Move to today , i come in hopes with like “okay it has been 5 years it has to look atleast a little better or the same. “
Imagine my shock when the art and animation look horrible and not even the voice actor sounds the same anymore. If it is the same voice actor he clearly isn’t caring about this role anymore and i dont blame him.

The story compositing isn’t hitting either , everything just feels worse.
I look at the studios and yup , a different studio. But this studio has done better. Say what you will about the Overpowered redhead sister anime but it had great animation at least. This has nothing to offer.

Zero expectations and still disappointed , that’s crazy

They have changed so much I hate it. I guess the R stands for reboot. Who thought changing character design was a good idea? I want to vomit after watching this episode. Season 1 was by far better than what I have seen so far and that is saying a lot since the show was already out there as it was.

the art style is totally different from season 1 and all voice change except Kunai... Why ? The previous seiyuu was good so i don't know why change 99% of the casting.

To be honest I really loved the first season of this show but after watching the first episode of this new retry version it left me scratching my head. I mean what was the purpose of rewriting the beginning of an already established show that already has a established fan base the way it was? Why waste time changing tiny details at the beginning when the original was fine the way it was? Like was it necessary to change the sex of the idol in the shrine to male this time around? Everything else seemed pretty similar otherwise, so was it that important to the plot to rewrite small details like that? Do these few new changes that seem meaningless on the surface really make it totally a new & fresh show? I guess only time will tell but it just seems like such a waste when the original version was fine. What did they think fans of the last season would think about the show they loved being rewritten & sidelined? It may not have been the biggest hit that season but it didn't do badly either & also had it's fair share of hard core fans who were eagerly awaiting season 2. Also the animation quality & style are vastly different than in the last version, but whether you thought that it was better or worse it was at least good enough "if" the story was on point, but so far that hasn't panned out as yet.
It's still early days and I still have my fingers crossed that somehow this new studio has a grand plan that we just haven't seen the results of yet, one that will hopefully subvert all our expectations and blow our minds and prove all the early critics(including me) wrong. But either way i'm invested in this series so will be riding this train until the very last stop. Plus there's no harm in being a little positive now & again is there? So who knows a miracles might still happen. It's happened before where shows have had bad start but still went on to get mostly positive reviews so why not this one too, err right? ;)

Oh, man, I actually thought S1 was kind of entertaining with good art style. And it seems like this season has already butchered the latter. It's too early to comment on the former still, but I don't have high hopes...

Should've just been an episode 0? Seemed like a choppy recap.
