How can anything look better on a smaller laptop screen compared to on a modern OLED TV screen, especially when you're used to the latter?

Wait, you can play video files directly over the TV without hooking up a computer? :o
You might need to convert the files, then

@Noboru I like having it right in front of me, easier to see everything and looks clearer. Plus, I prefer to use headphones since I watch some questionable stuff every now and then. Old anime does look better upscaled on big screen though, not sure of the technical reasons behind that.

How is it easier to see everything on a smaller screen? I don't get it. Also, how can a laptop screen with a likely much cheaper panel have a clearer screen than a TV with a much better display technology?
As for headphones, but can't you just hook up your laptop on your TV screen? Unless you don't want to have that "questionable stuff" be displayed on a big screen, either xD

My laptop is hooked up to my 60 inch TV via hdmi which I use as my monitor.

Plus I sit fairly close to my TV. About 4 feet from it.

Digital animation looks better close-up
Cel animation looks better from a distance

It's not a matter of what screen is better, this just comes down to my specific setup and preferences. I've also spent years watching anime exclusively on a TV and eventually ended up preferring watching on PC/laptop.

There's also much easier methods to playing downloaded anime on a TV like remote playback on AppleTV for instance, that's what I usually do anyway.

Oh I see; thought you had a technical reason for it. But by that reasoning, watching modern Anime on your phone or on a MP4 player with an even smaller screen must look the best for you, then

Since my speakers only work with a(n external) sound card, I have to use my laptop for it; otherwise, I would be open for other methods of streaming the media

Quality wise yeah it is better on a smartphone, since the picture is condensed into a smaller screen, but the screen is too small to enjoy it. Try watching an anime on a monitor and resizing the video smaller, the picture will look significantly better the smaller it gets. Especially with old anime.

Hmm, you got a point. There is more pixel density when the picture is smaller. But what if you use a different scaling for your TV?

Lol well I never went that far, if you can upscale it without losing any quality then it's better. I would actually like to learn that so I can watch old anime on my tv with the picture looking like this instead of this

With a "Smart TV," the operating system in the TV can play video files if you plug a USB stick or external HDD into one of the USB ports on the back of the TV.

It's hard to convert a video file without the quality dropping a bit, and the last time I tried that, my laptop shut off due to overheating, as I believe it's dirty inside, but modern laptops are too difficult to open up, so I haven't been able to clean it.

Wait, I thought you had the quality problem with newer Anime o.o But yeah, it would be a good idea to take a look into the up-scaling settings. Maybe it works better with a different media player (app) or from a different streaming source. Apple TV might not be ideal

@Seiya: seems like my TV does have USB-ports on it, so I'm taking it, I could do the same. However, I haven't managed to get my external speakers to work without the external sound card that is hooked on my laptop.

Better a bit worse quality than not being able to play it all. That's why I don't buy laptops that can't be opened and maintained that easily. However, you could dry some cold blowers and/or cleaning sprays for the vents.

My friend gave me the laptop for free, so that's why I'm using it, as I typically prefer desktops.

I may attempt to blow some air into the vents, although I may just buy another computer later this year if I can afford it.

No, the quality is fine for newer anime I just prefer the screen closer to me. Its different for old anime because a lot of their natural resolution is 480p, they look better from farther away hence needing a bigger screen. I don’t think it’s even possible to upscale it to a TV and keep the same quality like in that first photo.

Oh I see. For me, it's been easier to set up a laptop for streaming Anime + Visual Novels and do the rest on the desktop computer. Anyway, I hope you manage to find a good enough computer^^

Oh I see. Well, perhaps not the same quality as the smaller picture, but maybe a different media player and/or a different streaming source can do the up-scaling better than your current configuration.

Problem is that tvs don't have enough processing power to handle some anime encodes-especially the h.264 ones encoded with the hi5.1 profile using 16 reference frames.

I'm not sure what "hi5.1" is, but if it has something to do with the level that it's set on, could I just lower the level with a H264 level editor?

Television as of late. I can stream Prime and Netflix through my provider so I have been just doing that seen I haven't been picky or caring about seasonals for the last year.

Other then that, I rather do my phone. My laptop video rate is a pain to work with unless I torrent.

It's an encoding profile that was (and still is) popular with anime fansubbers. Basically it takes quite a bit of processor power to decode. All of those android boxes lack the power to do it-you either need a htpc or a Shield TV to watch it.
You can re-encode it but why bother?

Well, I don't like watching Anime on my computer. Last fall, I started watching 11 different Anime at one time that were brand new, and currently airing, and they all worked on my TV, but I guess I just got lucky with those.

Probably that's the fact, when you watch it on TV you can take more comfortable positions, then sitting in front of the laptop/PC or to lay with a laptop on your laps. So because you can feel more comfortable, you enjoy better the anime, movie or something else.
