Hmm... Wolf's Rain OST 1 and 2, definitely, along with Rurouni Kenshin's "Best Theme Collection" and OST 1 and 2. .hack//sign's OST 1 and 2 were also good, along with the .hack//roots OST 1. .hack in general has great music, with the exception for the LOTT OST. Death Note's OST was good, along with the "Best the Bridge" collection from Gundam Seed/Destiny. The OSTs to GS/GSD weren't to my liking, however. But one of the most addicting music from a series... is anything from Initial D.

I mostly agree with you. Ost's from Wolf's rain, GS &GSD, Death Note and Kenshin are masterpieces but I have to add one OST: Hikaru no go's Ost.

What I like is that even though you've just watched an anime series that was complete crap or mind-numbingly mediocre, the music can still make it a worthwhile experience.

Wolf's Rain is a classic example for me. The anime was ok, but nothing to shout about, but Kanno's score was beautiful as ever, I listen to it all the time. I watched the equally meh Darker Than Black just because she was involved.

Reideen is lame, but it has a hidden musical gem by the promising Ike Yoshihiro.

Even Naruto Shitpooden has the equally promising Yasuharu Takanashi behind it.

Far too many good soundtracks out there to mention, but thought I'd throw some random thoughts out there.

I was disappointed in Darker Than Black's OST, honestly. I like most of Kanno's work, but DtB was quite mediocre. Maybe it doesn't help that I never finished the series, I dunno. Most OSTs stand fine on their own though so I don't think that's it.

And yes, Takanashi Yasuharu is awesome. I've loved all of his work so far (Just wish I could find the Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge OST >.<)

I'm pretty sure there's music in the series that wasnt on the OST too, I'm still waiting for a second one. But yeah, not one of her best efforts for sure.

I am not sure if this topic has been discussed before. If it has, my apologies. Now, on to the topic.

As the title states, what are your favorite anime OSTs (and maybe why?)? My two favorite at the moment would probably be the:

A) Boogiepop Phantom OST - Composed by many different artists (also a pain in the arse to sort out on winamp), this OST features a whole variety of genres and songs. Each song is a bit long, but that didn't matter. Great OST.

B) Hellsing OSTs (more so the second) - The Hellsing OSTs (composed by Yasushi Ishii) feature so many different styles and mixes them all together, and has never ceased to amaze me since downloading them god knows how long ago. Yasushi did wonders with these OSTs, and has, in my opinion, much talent as an artist.

Now your turn. I do a pretty mediocre job at explaining why I love the OSTs here, and you are welcome to contribute more or less.

Cheers

I see anime OSTs in two different categories, "fitting" and "great listening music". There is loads of well executed music that fits into a certain anime perfectly, however, I wouldn't necessarily listen to in my free time. Yoko Kanno is one of my favorites that fit into this category.

I think the more important category to focus on is great listening music, so I will post about just those. Numbers one and two stand out the most.

1. Samurai Champloo OSTs - Arguably the best soundtracks of all time. Among the best hip hop beats in existence, so if hip hop is your kind of music, don't miss out on this. The soundtracks include music produced by four remarkable artists; Nujabes, Tsutchie, Fat Jon, and Force of Nature. With hip hop being my favorite type of music, and with Nujabes being my all-time favorite artist to ever step foot on this Earth, it is no surprise I would pick this as the best anime sountrack. This anime has given us four masterful CDs which I listen to frequently. It's hard to believe an anime could have organized something of this stature.

2. Boogiepop Phantom OST - A mix of various types of music: Electronic, drum & bass, and ambient. I didn't even realize how great the music was while watching Boogiepop.

3. Hellsing OSTs - I must second this one. Yasushi Ishii incorporates a lot into his music, these soundtracks really stand out.

4. Akagi OST - Short, odd tunes that greatly increased my appreciation for Akagi. If you watch Akagi, these songs cannot go unnoticed...you will most likely enjoy this OST. Not an easy one to find, I had to search for a few hours.

5. Dragon Ball Z (U.S.) OSTs - Memorable, unique, and most importantly something I would sometimes listen to in my free time. Five CDs in total.

When anyone talks about anime music I can't go without mentioning Interstella5555 - The 5tory of The 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. Although not technically an anime OST, it still must be mentioned. If you are into Electronica, prepare to be amazed.

I must check out that Boogiepop Phantom soundtrack you speak of animesoup. Please continue to post your opinions everyone, this could turn out to be a great thread.

No problem. :) I agree with you, when watching the series I had no idea when watching the anime that the soundtrack was this great. Somewhere I read "this soundtrack does not need to be played with the anime to sound good" or something similar, and I fully agree.

Yoko Kanno is also a great artist. I was first introduced when listening to the Darker than Black OST
