This is kind of cool, i've been meaning to get more involved with the community. I even fit the criteria perfectly, that's kinda freaky. Hopefully i'll be of some use to MAL.

Try not to complicate it, man. If there's something you had done in the past that relates to the position you are applying for and you believe could stand as a positive reference on your application, of course, do write it. But if there's nothing, leave it blank.

These apps mainly serve to see who is interested and who not. The staff already has their eyes on some individuals, most likely. It is only secondary to see if any individual has any (exceptional) past experiences or knowledge. But if they are present, then they surely are considered. What's most important is that you can work together as a team, basically.

On short, include anything you think positively relates to the position you are applying for, but if there isn't much/anything, don't be discouraged; and you don't have to write your whole background

Is there a time frame as to when you'll announce the people you choose?

I have two questions:

1. I am officially graduating this July 2017 because the commencement ceremony for graduates happens at the end of second semester at my university, BUT I have already completed my studies last March 2017 so technically I am already a graduate (in fact, I am already working as a department assistant / part-time lecturer at said institution). It's just not yet recognized 'formally', if you will. Am I qualified for the news writer position?
2. Would there be any salary/compensation for this?

I am forever your most devoted believer.

@gwendal738 I'll let someone else answer your first question. For the second one: no, this is a volunteer position.

For your first question, the requirement isn't being a graduate of a university, but a "College or university student or graduate." So you can apply even if you are a student.

Hey there; taken from the previous page (note that Kineta's reply is from the 20th of April):

I've left it open ended for now, but I'll start looking at the apps I receive with a closer eye in the next 1-2 weeks.

Probably sounds overly ambitious, but I hope to submit an application for both long form news writer and graphic designer sometime this week. I know I can't acquire both positions (that would be a lot of additional work anyway, I am a still a student after all), but I just want to say I've given both a shot.

Can't hurt to try, right?

Don't worry I have experience as an designer and with professional use of social media so I kinda applied for both. Good luck your profile looks really cute!

You can try applying for both, but it will generally lower your chances overall:

... It is possible to have a general interest in both; however, I tend to lean more favourably to candidates who demonstrate passion in one particular position or skill set.

Though in the end, the application is your field, so use it to the maximum potential. If you can find a way to explain your reasoning and persuade Kineta to listen and envision your stand on the matter, then that's awesome. But that's a type of people mastery; if you want to keep it simple, doing as initially preferred by the staff would be advised.

Good luck, though! (I have a feeling you're a type that would do well)

I must have missed that post. I understand and can respect that view too, since it's arguably better to get a bunch of skilled people to individually work in their own respective, best fields than to find one person to manage all of them in a way that isn't particularly bad nor outstanding.

I've given it a lot of thought, and while this decision [to choose to apply for one or two positions] may be the very one that makes or breaks my chances to get accepted, I fear I just might have to go against your advice anyway. I don't know, I feel as though I wouldn't believe I reeeeally tried my hardest if I didn't attempt to do everything I thought I could, ya know? (Thanks so much though for forcing me think it over! <3)

I do want it to be known, however, that on the e x t r e m e off-chance I were to get accepted for both, I would only want to assume one (whichever Kineta and the rest of the staff feel I would work better in), unless I were asked to take up the other as well.

I really hope I don't sound over-confident or anything (quite the opposite really, I digress). Simply wanna help out one of my favorite online communities.

Edit/update: I've sent my application for graphic designer to the bot, and will send my other one for long term news writer (hopefully) tomorrow.

I can see multiple factors as of why there is a tendency to prefer those who decide on one position over multiple ones. Those who send an app for multiple positions might appear as if they only wish to get on the team, disregarding the actual meaning of joining the staff. Those don't really tend to last long, which brings me to my second factor.

The recruitment threads (I recall at least one of them) used to warn the community to think twice before applying as the positions are not as easy as many might believe. They are quite tedious at times and require dedication, which mainly comes from the liking of what you're doing. Liking fundamentally different positions is not impossible, but it is quite improbable.

Nothing is absolute on the matter. Hence Kineta has also said that she leans more favorably to one side, not absolutely. If you believe you know what you're doing, then your best bet is to, as said, persuade Kineta and the rest of the staff with a strong application. It is doable, and I wish you best of luck :)

Indirectly, yeah. By having the fields listed in the OP covered, activity from the community is sustained and potentially rises; higher activity and userbase leads to more ad revenue as well as brings the potential of users subscribing.

But as a user, wouldn't you like to see the website expand and offer more features, some of which you might like? As far as the side of volunteers is concerned, the way I see it, some just like to help and are interested to see how the whole thing functions behind the scenes.

It's work done from the community, for the community. And while the owners of MAL are the ones making financial profit, the community is gaining on possible new experience and entertainment.

@Kineta: is it okay if I applied as a specialized manga moderator? Namely, solely for hentai manga. I have added a bunch to the database so far, but it takes months for the moderators to approve them, and I have a log of 300+ entries that I wish to add. Also alter a lot of existing ones too (correct chapter count, correct chapter naming, add chapter list to those missing it et cetera...). I'm building my own database in word, but I'd like to have them here too.

Is this stil up? Can one stil apply?

Also, I am not sure how my school system is compared to anything else. Like I dont know if I am a collage student (I dont think I am a universe studet). So, do u belive at the age of 17 (18 this year) is the age when ppl are in collage? I am graduating this year from my school, so um... Yea. Also would it be okey if I only have GFX as a hobby?

Considering the OP doesn't explicitly state otherwise, there is no real deadline before the announcement of new mods. So, until you see a new thread posted regarding the topic in the forum we are now, you can assume that you can easily still apply.

Only thing I concern myself with is the ambition towards the site. I work and babysit, so distraction at home is imminent. I worry over not being able to do a high quality article and not being quick enough.

Are there deadlines? How many full time writers are there at the moment?

I'm positive you mean long form writers, not full time (the positions are all voluntary). Wouldn't know about their quantity, but the OP links to articles submitted by arsonal, who is also the person these long form writers will be working with - he is the managing editor. You can see news team's positions and biographies here.

To be honest, it seems pretty unrealistic to ask for a graphic designer with +2 years experience, and enough time to work for free (I'm assuming you won't be paying any average salary, judging from the economic standpoint of MAL)

Don't get me wrong, if anyone's up for it, kudos to them.
However, most are so busy with school/work, working for free just isn't a liable option.

@DLDrillNB; Rationally looking, you are correct. Spending time and energy to contribute on an internet website that has little to no real-life productive purpose and that does not generate any profit may be unreasonable. After all, it can be seen as a waste of time that could be spent doing other things that influence you in real life; if nothing else, it could be spent socializing and not being stuck in the virtual world.

But the thing is that some people just like contributing and find the thrill in it. They are rare, yes. And truthfully, they could spend their time much better. But if it brings them excitement and a sense of doing something good for the community, why not let them? It is in the hands of the management team, however, to find out where such people are.

To be fair, if one doesn't really feel a strong desire to perform in the offered roles, they are much better off going outside, hanging out with friends, or just generally doing something good for themselves and not commit to virtual semi-labor to labor work. I agree with you on that.
