So in the end we get an open harem ending with a loli Kazumi, Kuroneko, Kotori(best girl) and Nanami wew my soul hurts with the amount of unanswered questions and I'm left feeling deep regret from not learning how to read and write moon runes to ask the mangaka wtf!

I remember some 3 or so odd years ago, not long before Brynhildr's conclusion was announced, I was talking to my friends about how Brynhildr's universe is getting balls deep with its Evangelion/Norse myth bastard child and all of the unresolved backstories for the other characters. For example...

HOW THE FUCK DID KAZUMI GET KIDNAPPED??? The GOAT character in the series gets fucked over (even goth girl got an arc with her sister wtf) and the series' wealth of potential is shat away.

The only acceptable answer I have is that Brynhildr was canceled so Okamoto crammed possibly another hundred chapters worth of content into, like, 15. There were so many plot points introduced in the last arc that amounted to nothing.

With that said...

I enjoyed the final half of this manga far more than most (evidently, considering how hyped I was for it a few years ago), and I like the ending well enough as it is. It's certainly unique, even if rushed and nonsensical. Okamoto basically Mirai Nikki'd the ending except he infused his usual dose of anime bullshit into it and let me tell you that series was already heavy with the anime bullshit.

I don't even know how I feel about weird loli Kazumi's presence (INTRODUCED IN THE LAST FUCKING PAGE). My OTP sunk at sail and, truthfully, Ryouta and Kuroneko spending eternity alone together as pseudo-gods is bizarrely romantic to me. Instead, it's the harem 2.0 we opened the series with minus Hatsuna and Kana, all as pseudo-gods.

This is some wonky ass shit let me tell you. I haven't read Elfen Lied, but judging by the anime this is some anti-Elfen Lied shit.

At least Kazumi technically lives...???

But i really don't get it wht was the use of that fertillised egg anyway?i thought it could be used to kill loki But bothing sort of came out.

And how are they supposed to get more pills if the city was destroyed.

And what if they just kill the hatched grani once it came out of takatori just like detach it from the host and why they melt if ejected.what is The role of their brain if the conciousness is stored in the drasil???

This was at one point one of my favorite manga series - I'm a fan of Okamato's work, Elfen Lied is one of my favorite series. I love gory anime and manga with tragedy and apocalyptic undertones. When I first started reading this series it was 11/10, I got to the part up to where it was scanlated in two or three days.

Then things started to decline around the arc where Kana's sister came in - now to be fair, the scanlators fell behind and only updated maybe once every four months or so and I forgot what was going on every now and then, so maybe that's why.

But, this last arc (particularly the ending) just felt so rushed and like the mangaka gave up.

I personally gave it a 7/10 because even though it was lacking in the end, I did enjoy the first and middle parts of it so much. Maybe one day I'll reread it and it'll have a higher score because I'm able to process it more now that's a scanlated. But, for now, onto Parallel Paradise!

I willl agree it started kinda strong and keep it for awhile, then got worst but still decent (anime butchered alot), from time to time it did show sparks of genius again, mixed with disappointment since aside the fact that the mangaka got addicted to drawn girls melting, after EL, he had alot of cool ideas here.
The ending could have worked, with a better execution and definitly ALOT more pages to be told, I was surprised nearing the end this was still enjoyable to read and at times keep you on edge with interesting plot twists, this ending just makes me pity what the manga become.

Had an hell of a time reading most of this manga, was such a good surprise at the time too...
Kazumi's fate was also left to explain, you just dont end that shit like that, talk about random AS FUCK.

It seems most people are confused about the child at the end. She is the child Kazumi imagined she would have with Ryouta. You can understand it by looking at her features which is a mix of two. I think the writer tried to rush the ending in a short amount of time, probably forced by his editor and this was the kind of happy ending he could come up with. Kazumi+Kuroha looking after Kazumi's kid. He probably only planned until the end of Valkyrie arc when he started the series. Really pity this series ended like this.

Just finished this and the first words that spilled out of my mouth after completing it were "wait what?"
Too many ideas were thrown into the story after chapter 100 and so many loose ends in that ending. The lore was interesting but it just couldn't deliver 50% of what it promised early on. Oh well, atleast it was engaging.

1.Why Murakami did not reset the world
-He wasn't god-like. He just controls Loki and Loki is a living monster that destroyed everything.
2.Who is the girl at the end
-I think she is a Kasumi own thought that was written by herself. And a little Nanami in Afrodite form.
I think That is a very happy ending
3.What happens to the world after?
-I think It is unnecessary But I agree that it is better to have it.
3.What is Murakami father plan
-That was very pretty explained in the story But What Didn't is the New Director plan
I guess she is an enemy of the corporation from the start But What she did, didn't make any sense at all.
She got power from the corporation in the same way Malkira got But her true intention is to destroy a plan and save humanity by creating valkyrie unforgivable cruelly and releasing it to the world So People will see the Truth WTF. I think that isn't a good plan at all What she did is only mental It would be great if her role just dying badly more than others' antagonists It may be fun and more acceptable.

From This Vague point. I think this isn't the real ending, it is too fast and didn't sum the answer together at all.
It is a high possibility that mangaka gave up. It is normal for every long-run manga.
I very like this manga My mind was crashed uncountable times.
I was very pressured in many scenes. I was very invested. Long-run 180 chapters in 12 hours I was very excited about what is going to happen

With this ending I expected manga to explore "Kuro Neko" feelings more and more Because There wasn't any point in Ending that hit hard.
Without this, It ruins this ending for a level. If you want to end with an Emotion ride tone, At least made It emotional.
I'm pretty sure that I am very sensitive But I still didn't feel very invested with any of them. From a plot perspective, I should feel so bad and crying for every character But I didn't. It looks sad But didn't that sad. The best characters scene I gave it to Best Girl Nanami and Kotori though, Kasumi is likely But Nehh Grow A little bit young girl, For the rest, It is honestly disappointing I expected something better. (Kuroha team tho)
For Mc Not kidding he is the best character in this story He entertained me a lot.
I don't mean the character is bad, I think the characters are very good But They have not to reach their max abilities in the peak time. It kind of waste. umm...mmh....just wtf happened! I watched the anime a long time ago and really liked it, so I wanted to read the manga since the anime was inconsistent and had a rushed ending & obv to know the ending, but honestly, I didn't expect it to be so worse. The first 100 chapters or so until where the anime adapted were so great, there were some plotholes but I overlooked them since the plot was really good. But nah it went downhill and became ridiculously shit. and soo many things were left unexplained too.

Ik I’m kinda late but What the hell is that ending. I read the Manga since the anime(I watched it around 2018, just after finishing charlotte, someone told it similar to it) was completely rushed and probably never getting a season 2. The first 100 chapter were really good, but around the last 20 chapter, it when down hill. They introduced a lot of thing without explain, for example, they introduced murakami dad out no where, if they wanted to use murakami as the host for Loki why did the institution try to kill murakami and why did they introduce korori just to have her killed. The last chapter left so many unanswered question (what going to happen to the other witches who escaped, what happen to Kogorou, who is that girl at the end, what going to happen to institute v, what are in the ruins where the aleins live)and gave me darling in the franx + akame ga kill ending wtf. Such a great start but fell off.

Overall I give this a, 8.47/10. Would’ve gave it higher if the ending was’nt as rushed as it was.

Because this ending IS fucking awesome depending on your interpretation :

Brynhildr in the Darkness stands out to me as a thematically rich and symbolically layered story — even though it's flawed in execution. On the surface, it can feel like a strange mix of harem tropes, ecchi fanservice, and sci-fi madness. But beneath that lies something more profound: a tragic, mythologically infused narrative that reimagines Old Norse cosmology in a surprisingly coherent way.
This isn’t just a story about magic and alien technology — it’s a retelling of ancient myth through the lens of science fiction. And I’d like to offer an interpretation of its deeper themes, particularly the ending and the mythological framework that gives it weight.

Norse Mythology in Brynhildr:
At its heart, Brynhildr reimagines the ancient conflict between two pantheons of Norse gods: the Vanir and the Aesir.
Historically, this war is said by many historians to reflect a historical shift from an older earth-based spirituality (Vanir: love, nature, fertility) to a newer, more hierarchical and militaristic one (Aesir: order, power, control).
In the manga, that divide is translated into the clash between our main characters: self-sacrificing and emotionally driven, and Vingulf, manipulative, power-hungry, and artificial.
This isn’t accidental. The deeper mythic identities of the characters make that very clear.

The ancient Vanir Gods: Nature, Love, and Sacrifice

Kazumi → Freyja

Mythic Role: Goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, often targeted in the myths and misunderstood as being promiscuous.

In Manga: Brash, sexual, but deeply loyal and selfless. She is often exploited but chooses love and sacrifice. Her refusal to follow the test to get the codename system reflects Freyja’s dignity and resistance in myth.

Even the “fake Freyja” introduced earlier in the manga only highlights how Kazumi is the real embodiment as she gets beaten by her in the end.
Like the mythic Freyja, Kazumi suffers repeated attempts to be used or killed, yet remains devoted — helplessly in love, just as Freyja was with her lost husband Óðr in the myths.

Hatsuna → Nerthus

Mythic Role: Ancient Earth goddess whose presence halts conflict. Associated with peace, rebirth, and spring.

In Manga: Her name (初菜 – “first sprout”) and regenerative powers symbolize life’s endurance. She survives the manga’s Ragnarök and returns from death via the "Drasil." This is an interesting point as it highlights that Nerthus is an older god than Odin, free from his will (more on the Drasill and “YggDrasill” difference and why it matters).
Hatsuna is the soul of the earth — the one who keeps going, not by fighting, but by healing and surviving Ragnarök, and in a relationship with a human to symbolize rebirth.

Kana → The Völva (Seer) (The one who Tells the story / not a vanir god)

Mythic Role: The prophetess of Völuspá who foretells and survives Ragnarök.

In Manga: Immobile yet all-seeing, Kana constantly warns the others. Like the Völva, she bears witness and endures — the silent keeper of memory.
In the end, Kana lives on as a witness and symbol of the truth that survives destruction.

Neko (Kuroha) → Brynhildr

Mythic Role: A cursed Valkyrie torn between love and duty, often associated with the Nibelungenlied.

In Manga: Her memory loss and rediscovery of her powers mirror the Norse myth in which she is saved by Siegfried and slowly recovers her powers. Her protective instincts mark her as a true Valkyrie. She is caught between two “brothers” — Ryouta and Makina — just as Brynhildr is caught between Siegfried and Gunther in the myth.
Even her powers — draining energy mysteriously in Vol. 16 — reflect the Valkyrie’s mythic role in determining who lives and who dies on the battlefield.

Kotori → Grani / Idunn

Mythic Roles:

Grani: Sigurd’s loyal horse, descended from Sleipnir (Odin’s steed) and given to Siegfried

Idunn: Keeper of the apples of immortality.

In Manga: Kotori’s transformation during the Ain Soph Aur shows her sprouting 8 legs in reference to Sleipnir and Grani.

Her capture is the key for Ryouta to reunite with the True Neko (like Siegfried who, with Grani that Odin gave him, saves Brynhildr in the Nibelunglied).

Her self-sacrifice to defeat Valkyria (Hel) aligns her with Idunn — a symbol of eternal life and innocence winning over death and destruction.

Ryouta → Siegfried & Mimir
Mythic Roles:

Siegfried: The dragon-slaying hero of the Nibelunglied (linked to Norse Sigurd), famed for awakening Brynhildr He is the slayer of Fafnir( bearer of cursed knowledge = symbolically his family knowledge about the aliens in the manga)

Mimir: The wise being whose head Odin consults for knowledge of fate and Ragnarök. Keeper of memory, sacrificed for divine insight.

In Manga: Ryouta is a clear Siegfried parallel — the “hero” who revives Brynhildr (Kuroha) from her amnesiac, dormant state, and who becomes entangled in a tragic love he cannot fully control. He walks the path of doomed knowledge — just like Sigurd who inherits a cursed treasure that spells the downfall of his line, his father gives ryouta the cursed renmants of Mimir's head ( and knowledge)

Fun Fact Volume 16 Chapter 154 :
When Ryouta says, "This is already the 3rd or 4th time I’ve died," it sounds like a throwaway line but it’s actually a hidden lore bomb.

In the manga, we see him die three times:

Killed by Saori during the flashback.

Killed by Valkyria.

Decapitated by Makina

But here’s the twist:

The "fourth" death isn’t shown until the very end of the story, when it’s revealed that Ryouta actually died back when he fell off the dam with Neko — the supposed "accident" from their childhood.

That’s when his father resurrected him using a Drasill : Mimir's Drasill turning Ryouta into a living container of forbidden knowledge and linking him to the Norse myth of Siegfried, the bearer of the cursed truth.

The Aesir: Control, Ego, and Collapse

Takachiho → False Odin

Mythic Role: Odin, who sacrificed himself for wisdom — and who feared Ragnarök.

In Manga: Takachiho wears glasses but one eye is always greyed out, symbolizing his sacrifice of an eye like Odin in the myth for knowledge of the Edda. But unlike Odin, he sacrifices others, not himself. He gives Ryouta the “forbidden knowledge” (Mimir’s head), just like Odin uses it during the Norse myth of Ragnarök to avert it — only inverted in Brynhildr.
He is a false Odin — all knowledge, no sacrifice, trying to save his sons from death by resisting fate.

Makina → Gunther / Deus ex Machina

Mythic Role: Gunther, the cowardly king who tricks Brynhildr and causes Siegfried’s downfall.

In Manga: Obsessed with control, Makina represents false strength. Like Gunther, he is a pawn of others — manipulated into conflict, undone by his pride.
The name "Deus ex Machina" is no accident — he’s the embodiment of the plot twist in this manga, leading the story to its conclusion, but it also makes symbolic sense as Gunther is a pawn in the story of the Nibelunglied.

Valkyria → False Hel

Mythic Role: Goddess of the dead.

In Manga: Created artificially, Valkyria is a science-born avatar of death. She is defeated not by force, but by Kotori’s self-sacrifice — the final triumph of nature over constructed death.
Her final battle, deep underground, recalls Helheim — the underworld.

Yggdrasill vs. Drasil: Faith vs. Control

Yggdrasill (Myth): The World Tree, source of fate, memory, and sacrifice.

Drasil (Manga): An artificial “tree” designed to control and replicate life.
This contrast is the manga’s central philosophical question:
Will you control life through fear, or love it through sacrifice?
Odin’s myth involves hanging himself on Yggdrasill to learn fate’s wisdom. But the scientists in Brynhildr build their Drasil by sacrificing others. That’s why their system collapses — it has no soul.

The Murakami Lineage and the Cursed Treasure of the Nibelungen
Ryouta, like Siegfried, inherits a cursed legacy — the alien remains, a metaphor for forbidden knowledge. In myth, gold and power doom Sigurd’s line.

Final Reflection: The True Ending
The final volume of Brynhildr doesnt give us a clear ending but symbolically charged . It give us a Ragnarok scenario that is avoided by our main characters sacrifice :

Kazumi / Neko / Ryouta / Kotori / Nanami in the Edda : all of these characters sacrificed their ego and lives and then attain godhood ( which justifies them being in the EDDA at the end)

On earth we have :

Kana (memory of the ragnarok)
Hatsuna (rebirth)
These are the survivors of the "Aesir Vanir War". While in the myth Aesir defeats Vanir and the ragnarok is unavoidable, in this manga Vanir wins and ragnarok is halted. Nerthus(Hatsuna) survives as a symbol of life regenerating on earth.

And that, to me, that's a real message:
Real power is paid in pain. And it’s only real when it’s not for yourself.

Yes, this manga has flaws. The pacing breaks down. The ecchi and harem tropes can feel gratuitous. Some characters deserved more development.
But despite that — Brynhildr in the Darkness it’s a mythic tragedy disguised as sci-fi drama, a story of fading gods, science as the new religion , and the power of love over knowledge
And if you read it through the lens of Norse myth, you might just see a different story entirely.

Elfen lied maybe his magnus opus but this doesn't really fall off far away from my expectation.Iam pretty much satisfied with the completion of the manga.Yes there is many open ends and things which left unexplained of their existence but overall the two arcs (<100 ,>100) had their unique flavour and pacing which kept me thinking whats to come.
It gets a 8/10 from me
