i only follow an italian group of reviewers (2 guys), they're really good, they are very good at talking about direction and storytelling too. However they don't influence my thoughts about a series, i use to think with my brain

I Think most of the reviewers have their own opinion, but some as the Anime Man, Mothers Baseament and Digibro like to make hate videos, specially on SAO. I think this kind of video is not more only their personal opinions, but bait and view hunting

Woah! thanks for the insight everybody! The opinions varied from helpful to hilarious all the way to a kind of weird that I haven't encountered before this. Hahah. But I appreciate the feedback.

I use to watch a lot of reviews. In fact I based everything I watch from reviews. But since joining MAL, I rarely watch them.

I don't watch them as a reference as for whether or not I want to watch an anime, I just like it if a reviewer is able to really go in-depth on their view and opinion on an anime and explains why they liked and disliked the parts they choose to address. I also like it if they include some extras, like funny animation frames, hidden references, background behind the development of the anime etc. I like it when reviewers are able to state their opinion without just going with the flow, and manage to find things to praise in bad anime, or things to critique in good or widely popular anime, backed up with good arguments, of course. For me, a good video review should be something enjoyable to watch, regardless of whether or not I've seen the anime or if I'm interested in checking out the anime at all.
Unfortunately, not many reviewers seem to do that. A lot of the reviewers I've tried videos of tend to keep their reviews short and far too basic: summary of the plot, and then quickly going over art, animation, sound, characters and then their final opinion.

Well, I like the ones I think are good, obviously. :P However, I rarely watch reviews for a show in haven't seen yet. I've seen a lot of people have an overly biased preconception about a show because they saw reviews of it beforehand. I try to avoid that as much as I can.

Generally speaking, they are bottom of the barrel. They are not funny or insightful usually and are really cringe worthy at best. Their analyses lack detailed explanations usually. The only video by digibro I like is his monogatari analysis. Other than that, I am not really impressed.

I find that a lot of them have very simple tastes and tend to jump on whatever bandwagon is the most popular for more views. They hardly have anything critical to say and just play to the crowd and repeat stuff like 'YOO, HYPE OMG'. The majority of them are incredibly shallow and, while some may have a passion for it, simply just aren't entertaining or have good enough taste to warrant sifting through their hundreds of daily uploads for.
The only good anime reviewer is Demo, and he's pretty much dead, so...

Praise!

I'm fine with people who review series on youtube... I check some of them but never really finish all of it.. Most of them, I find boring...

Overall, as long as they're true to themselves, then I'm fine...

Episodic reviews, from what I've seen at least, are pretty fucking stupid. They offer little substance of value to me, and for the most part just seem to be rehashing what happened in the show, while at the same time sucking the show's cock.

Series reviews are much nicer. They look at the anime in a much broader spectrum, while still being able to cite specific instances that are good or bad. They effectively take several hours of coal like episodic reviews, and condense them into one nice diamond full series review. Series reviews are generally much more critical because of this as well, as they are looking at the entire picture, not just a small snap shot. It is much easier to find errors and inconsistencies this way.

never watch any and I have no intention to do so, but somehow I can imagine...
I think it's useless to made a review into a video, better a written one since people need the information not the expression or whatever they're trying to show.
Video-reviewers are nothing but a silly people who wanted an attention.

It's one thing to say you don't care about watching/reading reviews in general, but why are so many of you acting as if reviewers that use video format are automatically worse at doing it than people who write their reviews? lol
Medium does not dictate quality.

BestGuyEver's review on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (SPOILERS: this one, but also watch the "Part 1" video, which is not really a review but quite fun regardless), for example, is a video that has a much better insight on that series than any other review I've read or watched, while managing to be fun to watch as well.

Also, there's a lot that can be done in a video review that wouldn't work as well in written form. Videos talking about visual aspects of a series, for example, are usually able to pass information much better that a written review saying something in the lines of "the anime looks good" or "the artstyle is unique", even if the reviewer decides to add some screenshots to the review (but then we'd be moving into a multimedia-format review, wouldn't we?). Here're some examples of that:

Even some videos about the anime medium in general are really great to watch, talking about stuff that a lot of people from the anime/manga community seem to be completely unable to understand:

at least they work and contribute to anime industry . And what we can do ? we review the reviewer, and got nothing.I've done it before in the MAL and get a warning by the moderator, this is where I think that's we better do what they do to justify what they have done,Rather than remain silent and continued to criticize them and lamented over their reviews.

I use to watch GlassReflection initially. But nowadays Arkada don't review much anime. Dunno, but he kinda pissed me off. All I did initially (when getting my subscription notification) is click on the video skip it till the end where he rate them and then search the internet for a written review.

And there are other like Gigguk, BobSamurai Anime, Black critic Guy, who are just annoying from the beginning. Well, they are doing what they want to do. Let them continue, but anime review are more solid in articles and written format.

Also you will not get good review of most of the anime out there which are worth watching.

So basically "written" review are far better than all the YouTube reviews out there.

Agree with everyone who hates episodic reviewers. Christ, who cares about each and every episode? You don't see people judging novels by each goddamn page... I hope.

As for whether written or video reviews are better, well, I dunno. Sometimes videos are just full of controversial shit for views, maybe, but anime is a visual medium and stuff, so it also makes sense to make a review which is in that category as well. I think I saw a few good videos that look at frame composition and editing/animating techniques - that's something that can't really be done well in a written review.

But those are rare, so for the most part, sure, video reviews are shitty. There's a lot of crap written stuff as well, though, so I guess reviews in general are pretty terrible as a rule.

Don't get me started on 'Top 10' vids, though. To hell with that.

I pay no attention to them, and don't understand anyone who does.

Reviews are generally useless for me, because my taste and anime enjoynment rarely coresponds with ratings/reviews.

More so on Youtube. If i want anime review, I will just read some of the user reviews here on MAL, I dont waste my time on youtube watching reviews, there are a lot more interesting stuff to watch there.

There are some YouTubers that I don't mind watching but for the most part they just over blow things in an attempt to get viewers. I like Forneverworld but "WTF!?!" title for basically every video is lame and is used in an attempt to attract viewers nothing more. I would prefer they just have good quality than all these outrageous names for their chapter reviews. For the most part though I just like hearing other people views and ideas in regards to One Piece. Review or Forums it doesn't matter so long as good anime and manga are being discussed.

Used to be a huge fan of Arkada up until 2 years ago, but then he started pissing me off with catering to the most mainstream viewers and I lost respect for him. He's so apologetic it's sad really, no matter how hard he tries he cannot excuse all the bullshit. By keeping and expanding his fanbase he destroyed his credibility.

But the bottom of the barrel are "episodic reviewers" and Chronexia's gang. Pure cringe

I don't watch them. Youtubers tend to try more to be funny or contrarian or provocative to generate traffic than care about actual content. Or at least that's what makes you popular. Just look at rori, digibro and the other mainstream youtubers. Nothing but tryhards fishing for clicks from what I've seen.

I also generally don't care about reading reviews. I'd rather talk about the show with someone I know than get the opinions of some random people on the internet who I never had a conversation with. So while I don't doubt that there are good ones among the ones with less exposition I'm just not interested. 99,9% of the time my own watching experience is all I need. I don't need input from strangers to decide what shows I want to watch and once I've seen them I don't need their opinions either, my viewing experience is already done and there's nothing to gain for me unless it's an anime I didn't fully understand which is rare (maybe a handful among the hundreds I've seen).

I agree with the first few statements entirely.

But I prefer discussing anime with people who I think know how to articulate their thoughts and also, back up those thoughts with logic and reason. Those are the best conversations to me.

OT: Well i would say most of them tend to go with the "flow" and are to afraid to say what they really think about a certain anime because of the backlash that might happen. But ofc there are some exceptions, like Demo and Gigguk.

It used to be good, until the trend shifted to talking shit about anime.

Currently, those videos that describes in detail about why a particular anime is bad is gaining in popularity. Honestly, I feel like it's pointless and a waste of time, but apparently people enjoy those kind better.

imo, I prefer reviews that actually provide better insight on a particular point, allowing one to actually appreciate better, but that's just me

Not everyone has an infinite amount of time to watch a bunch of garbage--people have jobs, and if we want to watch anime, then we want to watch something good. So I want to know ahead of time if what I'm watching is good or not.

So what, you can just decide that if random person A who makes youtube videos thinks an anime is good you will also find it good? That must be nice to let others determine whether you'll like a series before you even watch it. No need to make up your own mind about it when you already know how good it is ahead of time.

But that's not how it works for me. I can read or watch 10 reviews, all of them giving the show a 10, and then still end up disliking it. Or vice versa. Except I now have wasted multiple hours on reviews during which time I could have gotten a head start on the next series or, god forbid, done something productive, instead of just having spent the time it took to watch the actual show itself.

Not having infinite time is exactly why I dont have time for reviews in addition to what I'm already watching. Blind trust in the judgment of someone who is not me has rarely been proven useful to me. After all reviewers just give you one individual opinion out of a million possible reactions one can have to a series. It's a small miracle if it exactly aligns with your opinion more than once in a blue moon. Or just being biased in a certain direction by reviews before you even start a series.
I probably regret this post by now.

I think they put a lot of time and effort into it.

Personally, I'm not very interested in reviews in general, video or text. I'd rather have a conversation with someone about it beforehand if I'm not sure. Still, there are a handful of anime youtube channels that have a substantial amount of good non-review content: RCAnime is probably my favorite; Ninouh is pretty good; Mother's Basement has some interesting videos on specific openings; and AnimeEveryday had a decent video on atmosphere.

I would appreciate having more channels that focused on non-review topics like that, since I find them much more interesting to watch whether or not I agree with them. Plus videos on stuff like a studio's history can be genuinely informative.

The only other specific channel I'm planning on checking out in-depth sometime soon is Pause and Select, who seems to be discussing topics using specific anime as a platform to talk about the chosen subject. Whether or not I'll like it will probably depend on how review-like the videos seem.

I am mildly interested in checking out some of the channels Capitalist mentioned if they do indeed focus on analysis (i.e. more about "exploring" the show than pronouncing a judgement on it).

I have absolutely no respect for them. Double standards everywhere, anything that isn't "conventional" is demonized, and all you'll really find is people parroting the majority opinion. I've lost a lot of respect for the medium itself so maybe that's a contributing factor. I can respect literature, cinema, video games reviewers, but when it comes to anime reviewers I just laugh and roll my eyes. Anime is full of so much trash that it's not worth the effort.

I'm ok with people's reviewing anime on YouTube. The problem is most of the reviews I watched is amateurish, boring and sometimes, the reviewers can be very annoying and didn't even have idea what they're saying actually.

And also, most the the reviewers can be pretty offensive and never accept that the fact that not everyone will agree with their opinion.

The Anime Zone and Gigguk helped get me back into Anime. He introduced me to "Fate/Zero" and for that I am eternally grateful.

JesuOtaku was also a joy to watch back in the day. Alas, J.O. seems quite finished as a YouTube reviewer.

Bennett The Sage has also been a good sounding board in cast I'm really that curious.

I hope to one day do YouTube reviews myself. But, until then, you can check out my reviews on this site! #SHAMELESSPLUG

I usually watch reviews to get my first impression of an anime or a manga. Sometimes, I also watch to know what they think about a series that I'm currently interested in. Our opinions would either clash or match. I think it's all in our own perspective and enjoyment.

I dont like most reviewers. I feel like most of them forget to talk about the animation quality, wich to me is one of the most important aspects of an ANIMATION show.

I only like Demo-senpai (DouchebagChocolat) for reviews. I identify with his sense of humor.

I only really click on 'top 10' videos and such when they appear in my recommendations, which are essentially 'mini reviews'.

Personally, I only watch them to see if there's anything that visually catches my eye and/or if the premise sounds interesting. I couldn't give a shit about their actual opinion on it.
