Not a failure considering OP would only be 17-18 at most.

There is plenty of time for him to think about his future, never too late, especially if you are in your teenage years.
That just makes it worse... He should have clear plans regarding his future before even reaches high school.

This is lie. Ever heard of the thing....and follow me on this...people not fit for a particular pathway? The thousands of students who drop classes and change degrees all planned to do one thing but through trying the experience out, felt they weren't in the right situation.

Shit happens and some people change due circumstances. And then what? You waste a year switching majors because you didn't like what you were studying? Please.

Your main objective from geting a year gap is to get a breather from classrooms, tests, and homework assignments, what differences about being a slacker? Can't find yourself?
While I can't deny that part of the reason would be to take a break from rigid classes, I wouldn't be doing nothing. I would probably get a part-time job and spend a lot of time planning and thinking about where I see myself down the line in terms of career, religion etc.
Decide it now, it's better than being zoned out for a year.
I don't think that's a decision that can be made so quickly, especially since my high school life is taking up all of my brainpower atm.
Most colleges base their decisions primarily on academic factors. So, if you are not taking classes, don't expect you would get accepted unless you bribe the principal with your money that you got from a year away.
Like I said, I would be accepted and then defer for a year. I'm confident enough in my grades that I'm not worrying about getting into college.

Is that so? My parents, teachers, everyone tells me that that's not true. I was under the impression that most college undergraduates switch majors at least once.

I didn't take a gap year but I might as well have. A lot of conflicting thoughts going into college and I think I wasn't even mentally prepared for my first year because I was way immature and ended up wasting a year of my parents' money on college tuition.

In a way I regret not taking a gap year to get my own shit straight, but I also don't at the same time since all the experiences I built up during that year probably taught me more than a gap year ever would, and that's considering I wouldn't even be able to travel the world or build a project car because I had limited money at the time.

It's really up to you, but either way it's just supposed to be a way to reshape or strengthen your own values.
Just need to find out how to quote this every time so I can dodge the stupid 30-character limit.

Yes I did, two years though. I'm currently half way through the second year. I'm happy I did because I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school and didn't want to waste money later when I'd change my mind.

Instead got a full time job and have worked my ass off. I've finally figured out what I want to do and plan to start either this next semester or next fall.

Of course, I never liked my job either. I just chose it because it was the fastest and most reliable method to achieve my goal at the time. If you can't formulate a reliable plan within your mind, stick to it and achieve it I'd deem you as a failure. If you can't even find an occupation you enjoy without wasting time getting some unneeded education I'd also consider you to be a failure and frankly speaking if I was in that situation I'd just commit suicide so I could at least retain some dignity.

Nope, straight to Uni. But now that I'm finishing Uni I'd like a year off. I mean, 17 straight years of education. Yeesh. Will likely look for a job anyway though.

I'd definitely be taking off a year. There's a lot of stuff I need to do before jumping into a Uni.

It's better to take a gap year after high school than after college. If you take it after college it will look bad on your job applications. Try not to have your gap year extend passed that year though.

Yeah I did. One of the best decisions I've ever done. I loved the job I had during that time; so much more enjoyable than college has ever gotten

Though I got pretty lucky by being able to hop on a special government-funded project to get an internship at a big company, which I'm pretty sure I never would've gotten employed at no matter how much I would've tried had I been entirely on my own

no, it's an awful idea

when you start university the people who took gap years are always alienated somewhat from the rest of the class. this is the case in all of my lectures.

there's also the fact that if you can't get a job you basically spend a year as a NEET with no real way to meet people so you will have effectively wasted a year of your life.

and finally, you will probably forget everything you studied in hs/college during the year so you will be behind the other students since you haven't been in a learning environment for a year

The fuck? Okay that's entirely dependent on which country you're from I reckon

Over here I'd say more than half of all people have taken a gap year before starting university. I have never seen anyone being looked down upon for that; it's totally normal

That's because people in the UK are more likely to enter higher education and do not go straight into the job market.

No, but I do know some people who have. They usually go back-packing, or do a year of high-school in another country. I've heard they really value the experiences they've got in the foreign country during their gap year.

Nope. It's not that common here where I live anyway. You either go straight to Uni, or you try to find a job if you don't have any plans to study. People who take a gap year are very very rare, in fact, I don't know anyone who did that.

I personally wouldn't take it. In my situation it would be a waste of time and nothing more.

oh, a fellow eastern european.
the vacation between end of high school and beginning of uni is almost 4 months long so if anyone wants to explore the world, they do it during that time.

If I start another major I'll be done with it when I'm 24 and I feel like it's so old >< But I don't know
I'll be 24, too. :) Not to worry, it isn't a race. Get done at a pace you're comfortable with.

No, went straight to uni. I'm in my last year now, and I will hopefully have a degree at the age of 21. If a job doesn't come straight away, I can pursue some of the things I want to do as my "gap year" after.

We don't have that option here (unless your parents are rich enough to provide and not ask questions) so I had to go either straight to work or pick uni. I went for something IT-related but sucked at it so I dropped out after half a year and became a NEET for a couple of months until I got a job.
Had I the option to take a year off to sit and actually think my future goals and plans through, weigh my options to choose the right path for me to walk on, everything might've turned out much differently than it did.

I personally went straight into university after finishing high school but I do know some people who took a year off. Most of them looked for jobs and volunteer experiences so they could build a nice resume before starting university/college the next year.

it doesn't really matter what you study during your undergrad years. if you decide you want to become a doctor, lawyer, accountant, or something else that actually REQUIRES something, they have graduate programs for it. so, it'd be wise to go in straight away. if you don't know what you want to major in, just pick something you find interesting that you won't mind studying

I'm a third year at the moment, so I haven't thought too hard on if I'll take a year off or not. But what I can say is that a friend of mine who graduated last year is taking a year off to save money. And while I think that can be a good idea, I can sort of tell he will probably just stay in the work force and not end up going to college. Just who he is. So just give some thought on how well you'll be able to follow the goals you set.

I didn't cause I graduated at 18 (which is normal but not young), but now I have all kinds of doubts about the choice I made ugh... I'm studying Economics at a good university (public) and I think next semester I'm gonna start Computer Science at a good-but-worse-university (private) at night and study both at the same time... I really don't know if I'll be able to do it but I'm full of regrets already :c

no offense, but economics is a pretty useless degree if you aren't planning on going to graduate school. if you're studying it for fun and you don't plan on going to graduate school, you should probably switch or double major.

No, but I'm seriously thinking about it after this semester. My whole life up until this point has been school. I want to get out and actually DO something for once. Have my own money.

My whole life I've felt like such a robot, memorizing information, writing essays, copying down my notes, obediently sitting there listening day after day. I need freedom. It's been forever since I've written a story that is serious. College takes everything out of me.
