They must have, especially for earthquakes. I find it impossible that they.

Your house is one thing, family is another. If I were in their situation, I would not give a damn about what anyone told me. I'd be out looking for those I care about. Like shit I'd stay at some shelter for 3-5 days wondering whats happened to everyone else. Same situation with Mirai in episode 2 really.

That is why you register your name, so that people can find out if you're safe. Also, it's pretty much a given in any disaster that reestablishing communications is a top priority, especially for reasons like this. If their parents are looking for them, I say they should have found out they're alive and where they are after a day or two at most. Then the kids would be forced to stay while the parents go and fetch them. If they're with family, they might be transferred somewhere closer or start going back to cleared/safer areas. No matter what, no one is just gonna go walk all the way to their homes. Another thing, major aftershocks (even the earthquake itself) can be predicted, isn't it?

You can tell when an earthquake is arriving, but the cases I know of were earthquakes starting off coast (tsunami in 2004).

If it's in the ocean, miles away, specially-made radars will detect it before the tsunamis/earthquake itself messes everything up. But it started right under them (20kms under, iirc?) here, so I don't know if it works out the same way.

If they could predict it, announcing an evacuation in a minute (or even 10) might be hard (I'm not up to date with how long it would take it to hit the ground level if it's 10 miles deep, heh), especially if evacuating such a large zone fast is impossible.

Aftershocks are basically predictable since living none of them after an earthquake is unusual. Again, since it's not 20kms off the coast but underground, I don't know if it works the same way.

Pretty good episode. I think they're sort of overplaying the "spoiled kid faces hardship and becomes a better person for it" angle with Mirai, but her reactions do seem mostly realistic so I'll not complain too much.

I always love the old "falling object, when given any direction of fall, will always choose direction of main character" trope. Just once I'd like to see someone judge how it's falling for just a second and run perpendicular to it instead of straight away.

One thing that I'm really loving in this series is really good attention to locational detail, even going down to manhole covers. Here's a couple I found:

Google Streetview

Google Streetview (pan left to see the crosswalk Mari is about to cross -- to see the entrance to the park it's two "steps" forward.)

Oh and what sort of bitch would spill their boiling ramen on a little kid and then walk away acting like it was the kid's fault? Jfc. Say sorry even if you don't mean it at least...

I'm not standing up for that person, but people do things they usually find unreasonable when they're really, really stressed, like if they've just recently lost someone close to them due to an earthquake.

I happened to have been living maybe 30 or 40 kilometers from the epicenter of the 921 Earthquake in Taiwan ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/921_Earthquake ) when the first quake struck. I was in third grade back then, probably around Yuuki's age. I remember hearing about people jumping out of their windows from the 6th or 7th floor because their apartment was about to give way and stuff.

Perhaps jumping out of a window isn't the same kind of unreasonable act as blaming someone for something that's your own fault. Still, that woman most likely wasn't thinking, "oh crap, I spilt some ramen on someone else." She was probably thinking of something along the lines of, "oh crap, because of some girl, I just lost some of the ramen I waited so long in line for."

On a side note, the 921 earthquake was at 1 in the morning, so, being well and truly asleep, I initially thought it was a marching band. But I digress.

I think this anime, in general, portrays "human desperation" quite well. When something as big as this earthquake happens in our lives so suddenly, our selfishness and greed well up more often than not. Because of our discomfort, we want to get more comfortable as quickly as possible in whatever way we can, and by doing so, we often disregard the welfare of others (the public toilet scene). When a little salvation is finally offered to us, then we lose it because of someone else, we get, in short, pissed off (cup ramen scene) and jealous of others who didn't suffer what you did. If there is even a slight chance of making you feel better, you will want to take it, no matter the risks (Yuuki wanting to go see if their house is all right on top of the Tokyo Tower). If an earthquake of that scale does happen anywhere, be sure to know that stuff like that will happen in one form or another.

Just my thoughts.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. :D
Love how the show is portraying the human desperation when it came to survival.
I know how the show keeps repeating itself, but I think it's only because it shows the rollercoaster of emotions. Being sad, scared to death, and then remotely happy for an earthquake-victim. I don't mind it being repetitive, because I'm secretly hoping that Mirai becomes less of a jerk-off.
Mirai getting the runs kind of made up for it though.

I liked this episodes first 19 minutes because for the first time it truly displayed some real life scenarios (or more plausible scenarios) in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. Then of course it was almost ruined in the last few minutes when Mirai and Yuuki decide to run in the direction of the falling Tokyo Tower. It would have been one thing if it had fallen and they witnessed it once Yuuki said he wanted to go to the Tokyo Tower to check to see if their house was still safe... but no it had to fall in their direction and try to add an unnecessarily suspenseful scene.

This is called a trope, and sadly its a well over-abused one. Just like the 3 bad things happening to Mirai at once, the crying and then being happy again after told its all going to be fine by old people scene, the not wanting to tell that she has to go but later decides she has to go really badly scene, etc. But the worst conceived and predictable trope was the tower always falling on the main character one, which quite seriously is EPIC FAIL to use it in a realistic anime, in fact - i am not sure if this is supposed to be a parody or disaster anime after ep 4 - It even involved a 3 minute crying scene and a "thought he is dead but he really isn't" scene all of which can be attributed to several tropes

Tropes are things that only happen when you have a bad story and want to stretch it (or you do them intentional.. see Supernatural (thats a tv series)), and given its a "realistic" anime, they don't have much to go on in terms of story to begin with... After the 4th episode there were more conceived tropes than in most TV shows entire first seasons, and this does not bode well considering its only EP 4

of course, if you don't know/care what tropes are then you shouldn't start, but when you are also watching tv series often you are bound to know each and every sucky trope (like the quake hits in the moment the 2 are seperated trope and the "Main Character wishes for end of the world, and it happens" one all in EP 1 ;(

Now i wrote more than i wanted.. just don't like /predictable\ Tropes

Oh, those are called tropes?
I find them funny, especially when over-abused. I guess when I watched this episode I was more pissed off though than amused, so I didn't laugh at all, heh. Tropes weren't the only things that were over-used imo, so can't blame me there (except for not enjoying this).

I can't say if this anime does it more than most TV shows though (don't bother with TV, too lazy), but it's very close to some horrible dramas I've seen, where it won't stop getting worse (until the end, of course, otherwise I believe it'd be considered a tragedy? w/e, same thing applies to that too anyway). It's just effective ways to move people, and even though I can't even imagine how long it has existed, it's still working so they continue doing it. Good for them and the people who don't mind/notice, bad for those that expect more; what can I say?

That means you don't know the site TVtropes? http://tvtropes.org/

Is very informative and sometimes very funny to read. Has a (very incomplete) page for this anime too ;p

Tropes are not per sé bad though, some of them are funny or ridiculous, some are clever and some even random. The only really bad trope so far was "Careful what you wish for" and "Disaster Magnet" , well and that there only seem to be adults who are completely insensitive clods or super lovable and helpful

While tropes are not at all bad, they still sometimes insult the intelligence of the viewer, which might be worse than being cliché ^^

And even though i write this much about tropes i don't dislike the anime because of tropes... Otherwise i wouldn't be watching it.. i am just curious where it goes and how many more tropes they are going to hit ;p

Plus tropes are used a lot in fiction, so it's not a bad thing. To me the "I didn't see that coming" is a overused trope.

Anyways back on subject. Like with anyone with a bad attitude Mirai has had bad things happen to her. I didn't feel sorry for her until she started to look for her brother. When the tower fell her attitude towards her brother, as well as her overall attitude, seemed to have changed. She seemed more likeable now. I guess she figured out there are just some things she can't control and there are more important things she needs to worry about then just her little world.

It's no wonder she vented on her little brother, who else could she transfer anger to without getting yelled back at?

That's exactly pretty normal for us girls at that same age. Most teenagers are like that...and I'm not an exception.
I act the same way with my brother.
I mean, when I'm not in the mood, he's the first person I yell at if he does anything that would annoy me. Although unlike her, there were prolly less moments when she's being sweet to her brother.
I can easily get along with my brother...but can also easily get annoyed when he's being stupid. Lawl

Of course at the time when those things happened to her (Mirai), if I was her, I'd do the same thing...All I can say is that she's human. No matter how you look at it, she acts this way coz its what a teenager -in general- would most likely do at that situation.

Although I was kinda getting pissed off with the way she was acting...I couldn't just say that I hate her for that...coz we're almost the same. :'o

But that episode definitely made me cry. I can't help think if those things ever happened and it was only me and my little brother... >_<
It's a big responsibility and it would be hard for me myself if I had to worry about ourselves and worry if our house or parents are still alive or not...that's quite a heavy burden to take if you think about it too much. ^^;;

This series is starting to remind me of "Avenger" not in terms of plot or art or anything like that, but in terms of my regard to it. Not good, not great, but not terrible. The fine border between mediocrity and bad. Seeing as it's short I'll probably see it through to the end.

The writing has been fairly mediocre. Many of the characters are pretty borderline to being unrealistic. The always happy woman (can't they at least show us a bit of worry) I get why she's trying to be positive and optimistic, it helps a lot more in this kind of situation than to always be down. But really she's just a bit TOO Happy.

Miari yes she's a teenager but really why is she always so angsty? She's in the middle of a f-ing disaster and she keeps being so pissy. I would expect her to be freaking out a little more or at least try to have some optimism.

Yuuki as adorable as he is does seem rather naive for everything that's going on.

Regarding this episode, it really kept relying on the same plot devices of them becoming separated and narrowly missing dearth. The series is really lacking any suspense and it keeps throwing this device in a vein attempt to save it.

Not to mention plot wholes are littering the show. Them trying to get home, what for? Get to a damn shelter. It seems most of Japan is still intact, you think there would be far more damage and derbies. And there seemed to be a working well in the park, wouldn't the water mains be busted up? I don't know someone answer.

And the music has been substandard.

When Yuuki started crying wondering if his parents were dead I felt like crying along with him! Poor guy. Mirai is such a betch, treating him like crap, whining and acting so conceited yet passive towards strangers. I swear Yuuki is more mature than her and he's in elementary school.

And there's something suspicious about Mari. She never directly answers her odd attachment to the both of them (not that random acts of kindness aren't great, just rare and sometimes unsettling) and she also seems strangely disconcerned with her own child. Or maybe she's just the type who deal with pain by burying it in pretend optimism? I'm curious to see how that goes.

Great episode. Yuuki made me laugh on three different accounts:

1.) His portable toilet scene
2.) His goofy smile after Mirai threw the phone away
3.) Him pretending to be dead and scaring the crap out of his sister

He's such an awesome kid. How is he related to that miserable Mirai? D:

Oh man, tell me you did not just say Sword of the Stranger was bad. That's just wrong on so many levels. Well, this episode was slow, but I don't think it's that bad. In fact, I think the show flows better this way--I mean would you want to see the three of them running around like the three blind mice with falling buildings and cracking roads everywhere for eleven whole episodes? The fact that the show could afford to take such breaks to facilitate character development is a testament to its good characterization and sturdy writing(Although the character designs still look like crap for a Bones production).

However I didn't list getting the runs as bad luck because that just happens. And when she has a portable paper toilet there's no excuse to not find some bushes to hide behind. If she just went earlier, she could have avoided the douchebag cutting in bathroom line.

And I totally called those three going to Mari's place first, like she would just pass her own home on the way to he kids' house... Now it just needs an episode with some looters, con artists, or a sexual deviant; or maybe all the above.

The ration bag hitting the mud and her foot getting stepped on happened because she was unalert and clumsy, so mostly everything that happened to her was of her own fault.
