Damn that was anti-climactic. I knew Reiji put up a death-flag when he said he would return to Ein but at the last few minutes I figured I was wrong and bang. What the hell ? What happened? I'm all for ambiguous endings but this was just so bizarre.... My interpretation is that they both died. Kind of sad but whatever it was a fitting ending.... Sort of. I really liked Scythe, he was just such and evil fucker it was awesome. He sure loved to lube up his girls haha, fuck he was a great villain! I felt like he was similar to Light from Death Note. You know, thinking your plans could never fail and having a god complex. His death was definitely well done. I don't know whether to give this anime a 7 or an 8. The beginning was kind of slow but after about 5 episodes it really pulled me in and around episode 8 if I remember correctly it started getting great. The middle was still good but towards the ending of the middle it kind of dragged on a bit, I also don't really get the Cal hate I actually preferred her to Elen up until the last arc when Cal kind of became an evil character for the wrong reasons. Reiji was a so-so character I'm not sure what to think about him. I'm gonna give it an 8, even though it had its flaws it definitely was fun to watch and the ending kind of redeemed the sort of weak last arc. Great watch! |

I just finished the series. Mongolia wasn't too much of a revelation because they've been hinting it several eps ago (they even have the travel brochure at their house). I I was surprised how reiji died or how easily he did (without a kickass fight or reason). I don't know if ein died but it's sad seeing her smile in the end. Not sure if reiji could even see it and know he finally succeeded. It doesn't seem they're close enough for him to see it in his dying moments (if they were close to each other, ein would have had noticed him fall down while she was having her internal monologue). I wish we knew how they both survived getting shot and thrown off the river. Also, was there a reason for the scene when reiji visited mio's house to give a school assignment? thanks in advance for any enlightenment on this. Overall I really liked this series. And whoever made a joke that it's lelouch who killed reiji, thank you so much for that. I literally LOL'd. ^^ |

pointless plot was pointless wasted my time they did not achieve any thing major. completely disappointing ending they had to use a diabolus ex machina. ending was completely unoriginal. |

i kinda agree with XxNaLuxX . they took a bus to get to the middle of no were and it looked like it took a long time (eren was a sleep) i don't think a man with a cart would go that far out to kill them from a damn cart and not just drive there why a damn slow cart i have a feeling that was a farmer or something and it hides who actually shoots rejji which cld have been eren (in the dub its definatly eren he says so i dnt knw where people are getting elen from if im wrong please say so). another theory prtty far fetched but the bullet killed both of them collateral this is my favorite anime and a good ending i like not knowing if eren is dead or not although inferno is still around they succeeded in stoping any more innocent people having there lives stolen and being turned in to phantoms which will save many lives in the future so they are infacct heros remember that they where made to kill people it wasnt there fault. |

Just rewatched the entire series. I still get a bit annoyed with the death of Reiji and Elen. But then again, they had nowhere else to go. They had found her hometown, killed scyche master and can't return to Reiji's city anytime soon. It feels fitting for an anime such as this, but I'm still a sucker for happily ever after. And hopefully even an epilogue to showcase it. ...I'm hopeless regarding that aspect. |

I re-watched this series not to long ago also, and i thought to myself it would of been awesome if they made a third season. Just put it right between 1 and 2. Show Reiji and Ellen on the run from inferno. Then show how Cal became a full on phantom. Probably could of introduced more characters too. |

Look for people interested in what exactly happened in the ending of episode 26 listen up! All I could deduce from the events that took place at the end was that Reiji wanted to keep his promise with Elen no matter what which is why he took her to her homeland which was earlier discovered to be Mongolia. The smile at the end when she turned backwards might of been kind of like " its all over" type of smile where she felt glad, happy and relaxed that at last she was able to see where she grew up and that their hellish nightmare of killing was over. Reiji kept his promise because she did smile at the end. Now this is my OPINION but, I believe that Elen shot Reiji because the bullet shell casing was lying on the field of grass and not the dirt road where the guy in the cart passed. Now yes, It might of been the guy in the cart and the bullet shell just flew over on the field.now I really do think it was her if not I don't think she would be too happy(she did smile) that someone shot him first. I believe that Elen came to a simple conclusion that the only way to run away from that hellish life was killing Reiji and then committing suicide... Now about the flower I did a little research and it seems the purple flower resembles the poisonous flower called Oleander which is known as one of the most poisonous plants on earth often used in suicidal cases around southern India, Its toxic compounds affect the nervous, digestive and cardiovascular systems, all at the same time. This would explain why Elen is lying on the ground motionless while you might think that shes dead she is not, though I am sure she dies later on. With that said I have no doubt that that's what Elen felt and that is why she committed suicide but, the only thing I have no prove of showing you guys is who really killed Reiji the guy in the cart or was it Elen herself? We really never see a gun anyways... Pick for yourself: A. Elen shot Reiji B. Cart guy shot Reiji C. they both shot Reiji at the same time Here's the link to the flower: http://www.hotelclub.com/blog/deadly-flowers/ |

*Standing applause* So this is it. It's finally over, Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom. One of the best shows I've ever seen. A definite re-watch someday, or better yet, I'll play the VN. This show started strong and maintained a 10/10 from me the first two arcs. It dropped to an 8 the last episode and regained a 9 this final episode. Now, I've read many theories on the "end" but I'm going to accept the one where Reiji got shot by the traveller and then Eren who felt fulfilled, consumed the poisonous flower, after she realized that Reiji was also dead. Wow, this is one of the first of "these" kind of endings I've ever experienced (don't know if I should count Code Geass lol). Oh yeah, Scythe Master's death was too glorious for him, I was expecting him to die in fear. Oh well, I guess he was actually the first one to say "he hated this world" in episode 1. He was one hell of a memorable character. 9/10, a definite re-watch and when taking a step back, a definite top 10 favourite anime of all time, and definitely my favourite Seinen as of yet. Way too many powerful/memorable scenes and characters in all 3 arcs overall. Glad I watched it, I'll never forget the journey of "Phantom". |

This is what really happened and makes the most sense 10x from all the other theories and solves most problems with the series: Reiji's only wish was to make Eren smiles truly from her heart and go to Cal's world. He knew that there was an assassin that had been following them. He decided to let that assassin kill him because his wish had been granted and he and Cal can finally be together. Eren has finally found her homeland and are filled with the memories of them together. The assassin riding in the cart shot Reiji with a silent gun. When Reiji collapses, God gave Eren the smile Reiji always wanted. The flower is symbolic, it isnt poisoned |

Man, that was a pretty lame death at the end. A lame death for the two best assassins -_- but whatever lol. It was also wayyy too easy for the other assassins to die but I guess with everyone dead, this ends the anime forever. |

Really good watch, enjoyed every second of it. Now for the ending, as of right now I'll stick with "both dead at the end" one, there is a lot of clues that support this theory + it makes the most sense for whole anime, with all 3 Phantom's dead, their Master dead, and those 6 girls dead as well. That's just what I think, then again, this is based on a game, and in the game a player chooses what kind of end he/she will get, either good or bad one, so they probably tried to do the same for anime, by setting up everything, and leaving it up to the watchers to decide what to do with Reiji and Eren at the end. Overall great anime, ofc it had some flaws, like McGuire guy staying alive at the end (jk, he's cool), but that doesn't take anything away from this anime in my opinion. |

I can't tell you how strange it was to read stuff like: "the flower Eren touched was missing a petal as compared to the others surrounding it because God signifies that Elen is different from everyone else because she is the last of the phantoms in the world." I'm not making fun of your interpretation but we obviously got very different impressions from the series lol. I didn't like the ending. I thought it was a little sloppy and a continuation of the 3rd arc's SEVERE lack of logical decision making. I won't rant about it here but arc 3 is significantly less clever than the previous two and the characters make silly choices and decisions that leave you asking "why are they doing things the hard way?", "why are they making things needless complex?", "why are you still going to school now that Inferno has shown up?". Anyway, the ending leaves us with a lot of these dumb questions. On the surface I feel like the ending is meant to let the audience feel some form of perverse closure, and it hits a few themes home. 1) your past crimes will always catch up to you; violence begets violence. 2) Ein and Zwei managed to accomplish their life's goals (Ein finding her homeland, Zwei getting her to smile). 3) You see the sunset as they die, signifying the end of their bloody journey and a final atonement. 4) Their close bond and borderline suicide pact (Ein and Zwei are the same) HOWEVER, I thought that the ending really went against the spirit of the series Ein and Zwei alone were hopeless (at times suicidal) but managed to find meaning in life and a reason to survive through protecting the other person. They were also extremely good at survival and beating the odds, it almost feels like Reiji let himself be killed. There was no set up for a desire to die at this point from either Ein or Zwei. They had beaten Scythe Master, gotten a new life and seemed happy. Ein's reaction to Reiji's death seems pretty silly too. What made her smile? All this seems to have happened on the same day (same clothing). I'll buy the poison flower suicide (and if you look at what McGuire says at the end he talks about falling petals). But, we are led to believe that shortly after coming to the conclusion that all she needs are memories and her name to continue living, and after being all "Hey I found my homeland at last"...she joyfully commits suicide? Anyway, If they wanted a tragic ending I thought they could have set it up better... |

I've been thinking also... This particular ending, besides confusing the heck out of people with those vague scenes, is also actually quite sad for more reasons than just the fact that Reiji (and possibly Elen) dies. To be honest, I was kinda expecting something like it since the end of the 1st arc. If Reiji was no longer able to face his old life, then there was only one resolution for his character's story. However, when the dreaded ending did come, it was like a punch in the gut. And in some way it was because of the way Reiji dies. If you remember back in arc 2, Reiji was telling Cal that everyone dies and that it's the way you go that really matters. And that dying with someone mourning you is a good death. Unfortunately, by the time he and Elen arrive in Mongolia and he meets his own end, anyone who might have mourned him is gone. His own family have probably forgotten about him years ago. Claudia and Lizzy are gone. He had to kill Cal with his own hands. Scythe is also dead and Mio gets left behind in Japan. In a way, by the time the show ends Reiji and Elen's existence is a very lonely one, with no one else alive who really knew who they are (as people that is, Inferno is still there but to them they are now more of a legend and a wanted poster face). They are literally the last two standing from the string of characters that had been involved in this whole messy plot. And we would have been okay with it, because let's face it, they were on their way to freedom and we had already seen them build a niche for themselves in normal life by making friends already once in Japan, right? So it could happen again. They could set up home in Mongolia or wherever and a new Mio or whatever could appear. Except that they don't. The moment they find Elen's birthplace and their journey is over, Reiji life is unexpectedly cut short. In a way, even this would have been more tolerable if we had been shown Elen's reaction. Her agony, her grief, her tears. Someone mourning Reiji for all that he lost right there in the end. But we never see that. Even as the last scene fades, Elen is still smiling. Sure, she might be dying or whatever, depending on that theory you believe in, but that ending right there evoked a much more powerful sadness because it gives you the impression that in the end no one acknowledged Reiji's death. His and Elen's tortured existence, their mistakes, their hopes and despair, their struggles, everything, will simply go away in obscurity. And in my opinion, it's one of the reasons why killing Reiji like this had such a stronger effect on people. |

And in my opinion, it's one of the reasons why killing Reiji like this had such a stronger effect on people. Wow I how you mentioned what Reiji said to Cal regarding the way someone dies and having someone else mourning for them because I kind of forgot about that. It's sad how both of them (well don't know about Eren but I think she did) died without someone to mourn for them. It was the most sudden death ever. What's worse was that we were given the illusion that they could live normal lives now, and even found Eren's "home" but then right when I saw that guy with the carriage, I knew death was coming. Seriously this was so sudden that I had no time to cry. Still, it was one of the most heartbreaking deaths ever. Both Reiji and Eren were thinking about their future, about how all they want is for each other to be happy, but then all of that is now nothing but a dream, a dream no one will care about. Without anyone to mourn for them, their deaths are meaningless. At least Cal had Reiji to mourn for her, but for Reiji and Eren...there's absolutely no one, really fitting way to die for "ghosts." It's even worse that Eren genuinely smiled when she turned around to look at Reiji, something Reiji longed to see, and he's no longer there to see it. This is probably the most depressing anime I've seen yet. But I think it couldn't have gone any other way, except to end it with both of them dying. After all, both of them can never really let go of their past deeds and will still live in pain and guilt for the rest of their lives if they were to live on. It's bittersweet, really. Death relived them of suffering. ;_; |

Firstly what does AOE mean, anyone please. Lastly, I loved the last episode but I do not get why Zwei had to die, I was kinda hoping that him and Elen could have a normal peaceful life now that they had remembered their pasts. :-(,,, But I really loved this anime, I enjoyed it in every bit, the plot and character development was phenomenal and it really got to me on a deep level. Such creativity deserves only the highest praise. |

Man...I was really enjoying this series. I haven't felt passion for an anime like this in quite some time so it seemed a gem to me. Then they have to bring in psychotic overreacting for the sake of plot drama Cal with her bitchy Samus Aran image, the weird school arc that felt so unneeded and uncanny, and just when I feel the series will end strongly despite the weird parts and can enjoy catharsis, I get a troll ending in the conclusion delivered via suppressor, END. I haven't been this let down since Guilty Crown; fuck this. I guess the real lesson to take from this is if something is an anime adaption of a visual novel; the only way i'm going to ever achieve a satisfying ending is to earn it myself in a route. Also not sure whether Elen truly died or not as well, but she certainly wasn't breathing at all during those last panels. |

I'm baffled why everyone thinks Reiji deserved to be killed, it seriously makes me laugh to think how foolish a lot of you think that Reiji's death was "deserved" in the end, are you completely moronic? Reiji had his memory taken away from him, he was also given a choice to either kill or BE killed, numerous times. All throughout the series he never enjoyed killing, it's because he simply HAD to in order to survive. Please think if someone told you you had to kill someone and you refused, do you honestly believe that you would still be alive after your refusal? To be pretty much forced to train to become a killing machine in order to kill for others, and you people believe he deserved to die? LOL. Fucking pathetic to label Reiji as an antagonist when you don't even know what you are talking about. Another depressing anime, although the ending was fitting, this is another dark anime that clings to the fact that there are no happy ending's. It seems to be a recurring theme in a lot of animes. |

Mr. Albino kinda reminded me of another villan from Gun x Sword and he met with a similar fate, that makes me happy.... But then that they go all the way to Mongolia and he gets killed. Weather or not she got her memory's back still leaves her in an orphan all alone in a place she has not been in years. And that other girl is going to be waiting for him for the rest of her life. The story, the acting, the music, the characters & character development was all really great, but God why does it have to be so depressing. I knew beforehand that this would be a depressing show but I didn't think it wold be this bad, I knew Cal would die (from a YouTube clip) but this is too much. I probably wold have rated it a little higher if at least both of the main characters had survived. I wish the people who made this show would have made a more lighthearted show or at least less depressing. What a waste of such good talent. |

I'm not really sure about my interpretation of the ending, but what I got out of it was that Eren recognized the sky when she reached up to it, and was satisfied that she was able to recognize the colors she saw in her dreams. This was enough for her. That was enough to bring out her natural smile, which is the only thing that still mattered to Reiji. I think that his assassination represented the harsh reality - that they would always be on the run from Inferno and would never be able to settle down peacefully. So once they finally reached Eren's homeland, both Eren and Reiji were satisfied that they could see the places they came from one more time and didn't want to run anymore. Reiji seemed to be at peace with his death, atoning for everything he'd done and moving on with Cal. But just as others have said, I think the tragic part is that Reiji died alone, fading away like a phantom. Ending aside though, overall I enjoyed this series but just wasn't emotionally invested into the characters or story. I wish the ending wasn't so vague, but my verdict is an 8/10. |

Reiji died content, knowing that Eren is happy now. He died willingly and calmly instead of choosing to fight back at his assassin. Eren died satisfied, with memories of her and Reiji together and finally finding her home. That memory itself was good enough for her. She ended her life as there's nothing more in this world that she desires. One of the best bittersweet anime endings I have seen |

The series started out great for me. Everything up until the short time-skip was great but I didn't like anything after that. Some people love the ending, others don't it seems. I wasn't a fan of how this ended at all. =/ Watching way too many series where the ending disappoints me. Gave it a 6/10. Probably a 4 or 5 without those first few episodes. |

Everything was good until the final arc w/ the timeskip with a girl that somehow grows massive tits in 3 years or something. Lovely, just lovely. It was an okay arc, but it wasn't my type and oh that Bullshit of an ending >Rant I posted on final episode. What a bullshit of an ending, and to make matters even worse, they made it into an Anime original ending. The ending just gives you a big mindfuck on what happens.. Like seriously? 1. Driver shoots Zwei and he knows his death was coming (he doesn't even react to this or anything but simply falls down as if he's happy (because Ein smiles?). Ein poisons herself/Is shot too/Her great acting skills. We saw no blood on either of them. (I think... but obviously heard a pistol shot which made Zwei fall after. 2. Zwei is shot by Ein and after she remembers her past, she begins to smile. Then she lays out lifeless w/ her smile still intacked. It then shows a missing Petal of the supposed poisonous flower. -We can take this as Ein's good "acting" skills in which she's not dead; Zwei always praised her acting. -She's actually dead. 3. The directors fking with us and they're both alive; them showing the bullshit symbolism with the flower and bullet is to fuck everyone over. Hah, I wish. Of course the bullet casing on the ground pretty much makes everything say "Oh hey, Ein shot Zwei after remembering her past, and then died/acted her way. We can pretty much say the passing of the cart driver was just to block our view of what happens when Zwei is killed (by Ein). Basically, the director decided to give the viewers a "Pick your poison" of an ending. Score hovers around a low to mid 8 |

Well, that was an excellent ending. Which actually makes me feel kind of bad for giving it and overall 5/10, an Average. In the end, i just can't justify anything higher. It started and ended great, but everything in-between ranged from alright to pretty damn horrible, and even the alright parts were made worse by the means the story took to get to them in the terrible episode 10. The worst part of the show for me, was the erratic and nonsensical way in which most all of the characters acted from episode 10 to 23. Both Eren and Cal went through major character development in their respective arcs, only to have it all completely thrown away, and then magically come back for the ending. Reiji acted somewhat sane for the majority of the series, but even he ended up frustrating me with regards to Cal in the few episodes before 24, and his actions in episode 10 were the absolute worst part of the series for me. Because of all of this, even the excellent ending was really not effective because by then I had lost pretty much all feelings for all of the characters. The action was also pretty damn sub-par aside from the beginning and the ending. The best parts of the story for me were actually the Inferno side of the story, and everything involving Lizzie and Claudia. Both were good, constant characters, with interesting motives and stories. In the end, if it had been a 13 episode series with a whole lot cut out and some changed, it could have been great. It had a lot of potential, but mostly ended up failing to realize it and just becoming a frustrating series to watch. |

SatanicBeaver said: Well, that was an excellent ending. It had a lot of potential, but mostly ended up failing to realize it and just becoming a frustrating series to watch. pretty this, i lost lot of interest at the episode 10 by how unreal this episode was at all. the plot was not so bad but because of big flaw like at the episode 10 or the loli girl become a tall and sexy girl in only 2 years, i cant give more that 6/10 actually, i dont regret to have watched it but i got dissapointed for sure |

I'm actually surprised that a lot of people feel this was an unsatisfactory ending. Personally, I think that Reiji was shot, and killed, by the carriage driver, who we can infer to be an assassin from Inferno. I still believe that Elen didn't die, and didn't realize that Reiji was dead, atleast during the ending scene. She could have potentially killed herself after discovering Reiji was killed, which wouldn't be too implausible. Is it a bit farfetched that Reiji dies to an assassin in the middle of a country after dodging multiple bullets before, definitely. But I don't really felt like that did much to hinder the meaning of his death. I think this anime was easily an 8/10, because while it may have had a few flaws like inconsistent characters, and the occasional fault we can nitpick, it had a very interesting and unique plot, fascinating characters, and some very deep themes. It's been so long since I've been that emotionally involved in the characters of a story, and so desperately desired for them to get a happy ending. This one will stick with me for quite some time. All in all, a very good series, and while I'm not a fan of ambiguous/sad endings, I still found this one to be done quite well. |

I would like to state that I did not like this ending, the logic this anime has is beyond me. Reiji dies to a single bullet when he got shot 3 times and survived, wasn't he supposed to be the best assassin? Overall, 6/10, the fact Cal changed so drastically is hard to believe within that amount of time. When the explosion happened, Reiji didn't even bother looking for her. Additionally, after the time-skip ( with Cal growing huge breasts all of a sudden ) he didn't even explain to Cal what happened, and that he thought she was dead. Also, the school-life thing killed the depth and mood for this story. |

Yeah, as I said in my last post, there ain't happy ending for assassin. Uh, even in the end, Scythe had that stupid smug on his face. Hated him, glad he's dead. For those who were not sure if they were dead or not, I have read on this site that Elen ate the flower after Reiji died, meaning that she died poisonned. Weirdly, I just can't stop thinking that if she died poisonned, she couldn't have possibly died with a smile on his face xD Still it was so sad, god this is depressing... I should have seen it coming. |

the ending was... so fucked up it's beyond comprehension I would've given this anime a 9 if it stayed consistent... but when Reiji and Elen escaped to Japan together everything went downhill up to the end... 7/10 |

Nooo, soo saad! Poor Reiji, Elen smiled right at the moment he died. Dem tears... Life-long irony. Assassins simply don't have their fairytales for long, the past is always one step behind them. Anyway, I had a ride watching this show, it started slowly but every next ep is better and better up until ep 20 when it kinda slows down to catch the breath but last three eps were great again. Man, so much suffering and sadness in this show one almost can't bear it. But even that there were some hickups on the road from half-way through I had to maraton this and that is something I haven't done since Monster, there are very few anime that makes me do it. So in the end, I really enjoyed this. 8/10 |

What a hilarious ending, had me cracking up for all the wrong reasons. While assassins inevitably being killed sure is a plausible ending the abruptness of this ending in particular is just too funny. Mostly because I had to sit through the god awful final arc and inevitable outcome that they would beat Drei and Scythe while watching them do so with Matrix like super human moves and embarrassingly incompetent antagonists. Although I would of liked it to redeem itself I'm just glad it's over. Another anime that I can cross off my list and forever have context for when someone brings up an "underrated" anime. I think I'm being rather generous with my rating but for now I'll leave at 5/10. I actually rather enjoyed the first 10 episodes or so and I finished this series in about a week. Which is really fast for me but after episode 11 I believe, it never fully recovered. |

Im rowing the same boat as you, I watched this in 30 hours or so (3 sessions) I thought this series was great, up until the Cal arc..then I rejoiced when I thought she had died in the explosion..only to find out she was still alive and that puberty aged her by 10 years in 2 years time..it was painful watching the highschool arc as well with Mio's annoying lil friend 7/10 |

Expected somewhat a better ending, but to be honest I'm not sure what I would expect from this series ending, so in general it was a pretty okay ending. The series itself was okay it had some really good and rather bad moments with some very interesting characters and various development twists. So it was pretty lovely in general but somewhere I couldn't really like nor dislike the development I've got mixed feelings about the whole series but only basing on the quality of the overall series it was still pretty nice! 7/10 I do wonder what the 3 ova's have to offer for a story as I'll be watching that directly after this. |

Well this was the most depressing anime I've seen. Why can't I find a seinen anime with tragedy where the main character couple doesn't die or get separated at the end? |

This must be a first for me.. more than half the cast dies off and its still a great story. CAL's death was the most torturing for me.. it really hurts the deepest part. :'( Well.. in the end everyone died.. There are so many places where things could have been better but they just love to depress us so much. =.= I give credit for the amazing character developments and good twists.. but nobody kills off my fav character !! *CAL* Still.. it's worth the watch. |

What a tragic end. So many people died, all for nothing. Really don't like the ending. Reiji gets shot and Eren dies by eating the petal of a poisonous flower. I guess a happy end was too much to ask for but now Reiji and Eren can finally rest in peace. Such a bitter-sweet ending. 10/10 |

Sad ending, but still good. Overall the series gets an 8/10. My biggest issue with the show was Cal in the last several episodes. I just didn't feel her motivation. She wants to kill Reiji so bad, but once she's dying in his arms, she acts like she wishes things could've been different. Idk. That part just doesn't sit well with me. Still enjoyed the show a lot, though. |
