I was surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. At first, I just thought it was going an average movie and not as complex and deep as it was. I really like the twist near the end when Asakura stabbed Kyon. I was on the edge of my bed, completely surprised at her appearance and trying to find out what was going to happen next. The movie was pretty incredible.

A completely awesome movie. Everything was so epic and so beautiful.

I liked how Kyon was the one doing something for real to save the world. And his monologue was epic too.

But, as a Nagato fan, I must say that I kinda disliked Kyon's final decision. I know it was the "correct" decision (and was his personal desire too), but...
After I saw a shy Nagato full of feelings, after knowing her reasons (and after I saw the fear in her eyes because of that freak-needle-gun-thing)... Kyon destroying her plans (dreams?) was too heartbreaking to me.

But everything happened just as a Haruhi story is supposed to be (time loops, space time continuum, Kyon trying to clean up all this mess, Asakura popping out of nowhere and doing her yandere stuff... wait what?), and I guess thats why the movie was so great.

Well, I guess I just want to see more moe Nagato and her cute smile...

One question, does anyone know how future Kyon is able to save himself from dying? It creates a paradox considering the only Kyon that could go back and reset everything would have the be the one sleeping in his room.

Clarification on those events would be appreciated. Future self can't save current self from death.

I really liked it, just something that was unanswered (at least I didn't catch it).

I'm starting to finally unerstand this story, and Haruhi, shes not my favorite charachter but Iike how she is and Kyon is having a hell of a time figuring it out. I dont thing your actually supsed to see Haruhi as a god like beign, but rather she has enough power in her beliefs and will to change the world around her. Its like that saying "if someone figured out how the everthing worked they could change it", Haruhi does it without knowing. Thats my conclusion about her atleast, weather it's true or not, even if its not the autors intention.

For the most part, the movie was good (although not really as awesome as most people claim it to be). My favorite part of the movie has to be the scene where Asakura appeared out of nowhere and stabbed Kyon in the back, going totally yandere.

One thing about the movie that truly annoyed me though (and prevented me from giving a higher score), was Kyon's pointlessly long and annoying monologue at the end.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

Every story with time travel has this paradox (or a similar paradox). If you go back in time to fix something, then time passes and it's fixed so there's no reason to go back in time to fix it. Haruhi is just really blatant about the existence of such a paradox. If you think about it, Kyon telling Mikuru about her mole is another example of this paradox.

Basically, time travel is always paradoxical, and the show/movie doesn't care.

Good, but severely overrated on this site.

Just like anything Haruhi-related lol.

Also, am I the only one who didn't give a crap about AlternateYuki?
I found her to be very boring. All she did was blush and look away during the whole movie.
I don't get why fanboys jizz their pants just for that.

I personally like Alien Yuki more, though I did feel a bit bad that she can't truly show her emotions and such.
And I agree with Kyon, she looks better without glasses.

Overall, the movie was enjoyable.

Loved this movie just like I loved the book.
What I don't understand is why Haruhi is rated 5th when it has a score of 9.15, making it second. Is there something other than ratings that determines the top anime on this site?

Well... as an unbiased person I can say: That was something. As a casual Anime watcher I can say: It was confusing as Hell, a bit dragged but fun nonetheless. And, as a Haruhi Franchise follower I can definitely say: Just as Planned! Awesome!

I'll try to keep my biased side of myself out of this, but I dun really promise much since this movie showed us how well a written material can be adapted to the screen. As a LN reader I can say they did a perfect job on this one. This movie contained every important detail the novel had. I CAN'T be certain it's a perfect word to word adaptation since I can't remember every each word of the novel, I'm quite sure it included every detail and added just little dashes to make an outstanding animated adaptation.

But we gotta face the facts. It's not a perfect movie. I agree to the others that said that Summer Wars or even Eva 2.0 are better since stand on their own, while this one don't. This movie relies a lot on it's previous series and you, me, anyone needs to, almost forcefully, need to watch the previous series, of course not completely since the Endless Eight drama was certainly overdone, but you certainly need to know the whole Haruhi universe to fully grasp the magnitude of the work done here by KyoAni. And still doing that, you barely sometimes understand what happened here, what really triggered the events of the screening so you need to get yourself immersed in the Suzumiya Haruhi Universe of the novels. But still IMHO is a good piece of animated work. Plus there's no way Summer Wars is worse than this, since it's actually nominated to the Oscar right? So stop saying Summer Wars is better than TDoSH since it's obviously far more important.

That said all that's left for me is to analyse every aspect of the movie. First of all Animation. Superb. Awesome. Pretty. It's certainly an eye candy. You can barely spot mistakes on this one. And while it relies little on CG the bits that had it were awesome. Of course we can't have a movie fully done in CG since it'd be expensive plus that, in the end, is not the way we know this universe. Still the 2D animation was excellent since we got that detailed world... so obscure... and lit at the same time. So full of life. That's what definitely made this movie's animation so good. I made a good decision avoiding the horrible camrip and wait for at least the DVD xvid version. I could have still watched the BD 1080p version, but what's the point if I don't have a HD screen. I'm happy with the version I watched. Really pretty. Overall the Animation department is outstanding.

The sound. The BGM and the VA... Excellent. Perfect. First the OP and ED. I can't describe how happy I was when I was startled for the first time with the old series OP Bouken no DESHO DESHO. Somehow it's the most awkward thing in the movie since it has nothing to do with it, but I was still happy to hear it again xD. Oh and the ED found it perfect. It totally fits the mood and theme of the movie. A really pretty ending.

While some others disregard the BGM as non-existent, I found them fitting for each situation. I didn't found a misplaced or misleading BGM at all! At the prologue and by the end we had the common Haruhi theme BGM, while Ryoko went bananas we had pretty orchestral piece. While we were around that Human Nagato the atmosphere was calm.

And the VAing. Well done. We could certainly feel what they said. All of them expressed their feelings pretty well. Thank godness Seki Tomakazu has a pretty voice if not anyone could have been turned down with an ugly voice like nails scratching a chalkboard xD. 'Cause we really heard Kyon talk a lot dammit! It was all Kyon blah blah this, Kyon blah blah blah that and the occasional Asahina squeals, Suzumiya's high and happy voices, Nagato's soft monosyllable replies and Koizumi's cool voice. Although we had lots of Kyon this time, which's not strange in this series since he's the narrator duh, we can even feel the development of the plot and the character in their voices. A really well done work there. Overall the Sound Department is Excellent.

And now, *sigh* I gotta meddle with the three biased deparments... Plot/Story, Characters/Characterization and Enjoyment/Personal Feelings.

Okay first Plot/Story. The story display was well done and wasn't confusing at all... Had it's own good introduction, a somehow tumbling development, a great climax and a perfect conclusion. As intro what else, what could better enclose a normal day in Kyon's life than it.

Okay who the hell am I trying to fool. We all know that Kyon's life wouldn't be normal since he met Haruhi Suzumiya, but hey after all they were doing and planning pretty normal stuff for a club assembly xD. In fact it really felt like at some point of this part of the movie we were watching a K-ON! scene. Of course we weren't! It's Haruhi Universe so something bad had to happen.. Something really bad that lasted for another 144minutes! xD

And I gotta admit that the development that went from the 18th minute up to 1:39:00 clock mark, of the show wasn't solid enough since it lacked of interesting and moving moments, and like I said above tumbled in and out form being interesting to being rightfully boring and totally slice of life-ish. If someone can't stand slice of life's then that part of the movie is doomed to be looked at as bad. I won't meddle in which were good and which weren't since that's all up to your own perception and likings. But definitely when Kyon saw for the first time the Alternate World Haruhi... That scene is definitely beautiful and perfectly portrayed... Just as in the novel.

From 1:40:00 to 2:16:00 we had what I call the climax... And again it can be divided in many pieces but it's not easy to stay away from being biased and compliment and praise every each of them... I'll just say that each scene here is important to the plot as a climax should be. It's fun to see Kyon make up his mind and resolve his own internal conflict and solve the whole mystery provoked by the driving force of the whole thing.

Of course we couldn't leave this piece without a good closing. And it was a good one. All the loose ends were somehow dealt with and there's an opening for new things in this universe. And we had that touching scene between Kyon and Nagato

Of course this leads me to Characters/Characterization! Well what can I say, as a Franchise Follower I can't be more happy for seeing this volume of the novel being animated so well 'cause it showed the important side of it. The development of each character. You don't have to be brilliant to realise what Kyon says is quite true!

It's quite true that we shouldn't let ourselves misguided by the comments others say, but heck, in this movie realises it for us and he sticks to the facts and doesn't change his opinion about it at all. That's pretty important since we can see it. I gotta agree that Koizumi and Asahina received little screentime thus little chracter development, still we could see a normal Mikuru and a normal Itsuki, which are not better than the ones we know... Maybe Mikuru is cuter and can be surprised easier, but Koizumi was pretty much the same... so if we asked for development on every character, well he's the only one that missed a little development

But in exchange, Haruhi suffered a big change. Kyon suffered one too. And obviously Nagato did too! We could certainly see all of them have a solid development in their personalities and beliefs! Of course Nagato Yuki is the one that changes a lot. Now we know there's that possibility. It's really... thrilling.... and confusing.

And well at the end the enjoyment and replay value comes. The whole time travelling and fixing the bugs, the errors and every thing that could throw the world know into a chaos mess was awesome. We can't ask for a more exciting and fun supernatural adventure in this Universe.... could something more interesting happen now? IMO No, unless there's this John Smith that takes Kyon's role and acts as Kyon and Breaks Hell lose... I mean someone who breaks everything as we know it so far as provokes Haruhi to recreate a new world.... A new world full... of who knows... but A new one... a chaotic one. But for now I can't ask for something else. Me loved this movie

Of course I enjoyed Santa Asahina -so freakin' sexy and cute aka moe-, all of the Yuki moments, the shy ones especially since it was awesome to see her having emotions and face expressions, FACE EXPRESSIONS FOR PETE'S SAKE!, and of course seeing a grim Haruhi warming up to that unknown guy and her looks with long hair... dude she looks way better with long hair... I dunno why she cut her hair for High school, and of course Kyon's moments. The monologue that was soooo long, kinda Eva-ish xD, his surprised faces and him getting worried over the girls, both Haruhi and Yuki... What can I say. I was awed by the movie Pretty piece... and now, let's continue on with Summer Wars!

All I have to say is that I love how closely and exactly the movie followed the novel. All story elements are covered, and I absolutely love Kyon's monologues, although I admit they are sometimes dragged out. And whatever freedoms the animators had, they used them perfectly. (The imagery and such...)

Was a good movie which I enjoyed. It had its comedic moments and action too. I enjoyed the characters, and the plot was interesting. I will admit there seemed to be too much Kyon in the movie, but that is just my opinion, and I won't argue that he shouldn't have so much time for himself because the movie is following the book. I just would've liked to see Haruhi more (especially in her long hair form). Talking about alternative people as well, I would've liked seeing a bit more of life with the alternative universe cast. I ask what the point was about gathering the whole SOS Brigade if it was just somehow to let the restart message program work because it didn't seem needed. I would've liked seeing activity of alternate universe cast doing something together is all.
Next subject is alternative universe Yuki Nagato. I personally like her more than alien Nagato. This isn't to say I don't like alien Nagato, but seeing feelings in this character I've come to love as being super kawaii as an emotion-less kickass alien girl, willing to break out of her shy shell to keep Kyon with her makes me just shake with excitement. I don't care what anyone says if they think alien Nagato is better. She doesn't smile and when the regular girl Nagato smiled, I just felt happy inside.
Last thing as conclusion. I enjoyed the whole movie, thought it was cool, thought the ending lacked closure and a proper reason to how Kyon is dying of stab wound (also who is the guy with shadow who stood over Kyon as he fell asleep?) to waking up from coma in hospital. I also think Kyon is kinda selfish to want to live a life where Nagato and Koizumi can't be regular people instead of 2 workers that are at Haruhi's beck and call. I know Asashina-chan said she enjoyed her time with the brigade even though she had to be Haruhi's toy, but did the other 2 really like it that much? This was one of the reasons why Nagato caused the distortion in the first place right?

so alien yuki gave her normal yuki the feelings she couldn't express. i felt that yuki wanted the opportunity to be with Kou and she had that.

what is rather interesting is that yuki can possibly know the future and past all at the same time. the only future she could not see was the one where she normalized everything before that and ofter that she was fully aware of. which means that no matter what Kou effectively had no choice, even though he had one.

i also loved the windows 95 bit. they had the loading sound fx right too. even the icons....haha that was so awesome.

The score of this movie is: 9.15.

Gintama: 9.11

I would love it to be number 1, but the order isn't right.

Amazing movie, I'm really glad I took the time to wait for a space of time of which I was sure I could enjoy it in one sitting, and it didn't disappoint. It had me captivated from start to finish. A compelling story, great voiceacting and above all wonderful animation. BluRay worthy so to speak.

To be honest, I wasn't sure if they were going to pull it off after the disaster that was season 2, but this movie has put the series back on the map. I'm sure as hell going to add this BluRay to my collection the minute it comes out.

Really good movie, just wondering though:

In the Kyon stabbing incident if the adult Asahina knows who is the culprit of the alteration how come she was not aware that Asakura will stab him at the back. We see the young Asahina there when Kyon was bleeding to death.

im not sure but i think in the novel he apologized to himself for not saving him from the stab and that it was necessary.

why it was necessary wasn't told but I think he didn't saved himself coz he wasn't saved either ^^

a paradox ^^

I think the new nagato that kyon just met in the clubroom for the first time after his freakout was actually the one at the stabbing incident. Her face was quite suspicious when Kyon was asking all those questions, and I'm wondering what she was doing when she got on the computer.

I got sucked into watching this somehow and didn't regret a moment. This is one of the finest anime movies I've ever seen. And it just makes me love those characters that much more. I really wanted Kyon to give Yuki a hug at the end, but what he actually did was more than enough for me. The emotions I saw on her face were things I never thought I'd see and that I won't forget. Well done.

By the way, was Yuki smiling when she raised that book to her face at the end?

pretty sure its ranked by an average score on top of a 'completed' member-base from descending order. so until more people appear and rank it high at the same time, it will stay pushed down from the series that are more densely 'high ranked and watched'

Clannad AS: 9.09
Gintama: 9.11
Legend of the GH: 9.08

I would love it to be number 1, but the order isn't right.

as do I

Having read the novels I normally don't expect a whole lot out of the adaptions. This adaption however, was done fairly well imo. The reason I mention this is because some of the scenes I thought were handled with great care, some of the most notable would be Asahina's embarassment/Kyon punch, and Nagato's "Thank you". Those scenes made the adaption worth viewing.

Long haired Haruhi was cute !! The movie was at top-notch, nice ending. 2hours and 40min enough of a movie to be present.

10/10

Best anime movie of 2010. I always like the long hair Haruhi more than the short hair one. 9/10 for me.

It's true that there is a lot of talking and explaining of time travel/looping/alternative universes, so it's understandable if people can't grasp all that at once or even consider how they manage to explain it (Any sort of explanation of time travel or parallel universes usually end in a pool of fail-sauce).

On the other hand, I had a good time watching it and seeing how exactly they manage to explain everything. Again, there are loop holes in most anime that cannot be just simply conveyed by conversations between characters. However, overall it definitely goes under top anime movies of 2010.
