Ah damn, they're going after Nosub. Is it safe to assume that after this is over, sites would just go back to uploading what they were told to take down? At least, some of them.

No.. They're not going to take them down.
They're going to ask them to delete 500 manga titles and 80 anime titles.
No sites are being deleted

You guys thinking Japan is going to simultaneously knock down 500 websites are funny.

Edit: You realize the entire world has been trying to take down piratebay for like 10 years right?

They're not taking down websites.
They just want those websites (that they know of) to delete 500 manga titles and 80 anime titles

well that makes sense
Bakabt complies with taking down licensed anime/manga so they aren't on the shit list

Ok hear me out guys, battling piracy is like draining the pacific ocean. also this may sound crazy

the only solution that I can see is to have a steam-like service that provides anime and manga lets call it anisteam however not a lot of people will consider buying if there are a better source/s, better sub and faster service in free.

However if we have an integrated software that can provide all your viewing needs
-subs for multiple language
-weekly update for episodes
-bundled anime for lower price
-a cheap subscription fee to currently airing shows
-a mode of payment that everyone can use
-FREAKING OLD ANIME WITH SEEDER THAT YOU WONT HAVE TO DIG UP

now it may be enough to encourage tons of people to use the service, imagine having the ability to stream or download an anime episode or series the way steam provide an easy access to your purchased game.

But what is important is having a file type that can provide a 1080p viewing experience in lower file size, if someone can create an encoder that can provide that and have only the "anisteam" the only capable software in playing the said file.

Another important detail is gaining a large man power to properly sub a weekly anime, if lets say a corporation like steam purchased multiple sub groups like commie, and horriblesubs it's just might be possible.

Piracy cannot be eliminated by censorship piracy is a type of service that people will use, the only way to eliminate piracy is to provide a better alternative.

People are willing to pay for the things they like especially the things they are passionate about, and anime lovers are one of the most passionate group of people that I know, If a service pops up that provide a better solution than piracy people are still willing to pay. Steam, GOG and many more services provide great alternatives compare to piracy.

Just imagine a centralized software where all your anime are purchased, kept and easily accessible at moments notice.

Just the thought of a better encoder that cuts the file size in half while still providing a 1080p experience is enough to have pay an extra $, I know I am. A 1080p 12 episode series thats only a few gigs of space is enough to encourage people to buy it.

but this is just a big scaled small pipe dream... who knows maybe the pc master race commander Gabe Newell likes anime and make a steam-like anime service. Someone send valve a couple of great anime maybe they will consider :D

I'm in that state where I want to keep reading about this until it happens, and then I hold my breath and close my eyes during the operation, and then, in silent prayers, check the damages >.<

Some stuff in my bookmarks list might be affected...

Ah well... Nothing lasts forever. We have to take what comes or bloody hell die already, since everything works like this...

And BakaBT is not on their list :')

the japanese govt aren't targeting subbing teams and sites that release subs and host them on their own sites. so if sites like utw and horriblesubs sub/ rip subs of these 80 anime titles and release them on their own sites but don't host them on torrent sites or redistribution sites then the majority of the japanese govt's work will be for nothing

Hotfile and Megaupload are still running. The embargo they suffered lasted a couple of months tops. But piracy-related links get shut down faster now.

Either way, nothing will stop piracy, nothing, people will try and try and they will fail everytime. And to be honest, I'm glad, companis make such a big fuss about it when it truth, the losses caused by piracy aren't as big as they make it sound.

Japan is still lingering on the age old proven method of TV show to dvd and merchandise sale. Digital service and internet payment is the new age. Thinking about it nothing would be more compatible than Anime and netflix. If Japan (I guess I am generalizing now since its Japanese government and a couple of publishers) can see that they can still profit by just tinkering a bit with the pirate business model. How many people is currently downloading the new episode of SOA? and if they can monopolize that and charge 1-5$ per episode or 15$ per series imagine the profit made.

THEY HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY!! THEY CAN REBUILD!!
They have the resources, the expertise, and the talent to make a steam-like anime service as well as the monopoly on anime/manga nothing more can spell GOLDMINE than that. SERIOUSLY THIS IS LIKE A MILLION DOLLAR IDEA!

or maybe im just over exaggerating, Lets see who would use the service I thought of? hands up please

*Le hands up*

Has for the manga sites some may not but for mangafox I think they will since I heard their China based. And we all know how China is Mangafox won't be taking nothing down.

Has for Mangastream I think they'll survive cause they had requests to take down Naruto and Bleach well to stop and look at them still going strong.

I just hope all the manga that they are requesting to be removed are the licensed ones.
I hope they don't target the fansubers and scanlation groups.

Feel free to post some of their gems.

Part of me wants to see Japan come up with something new in this attempt. Asking the sites, or even threatening them, won't do jackshit. So I have a feeling that they might have an ace (or a missile) up their sleeve this time.

You must spend far more on external hard drives than you would do on actually buying the stuff you like.

I've always wondered why people would do that...

Dang, I hope they won't close some of the sites I go on or limit some of the mangas I read...a lot of the mangas I read online are the ones that aren't anywhere in my province, or else, I could've just borrowed it from the library or buy it at the bookstore.
Also hope they won't target all those scanlation groups and translators, that would suck for those who can't read Japanese. Hopefully it'll just be some sites from China...I can't open that PowerPoint so I don't know which ones Japan is targeting.
Plus, this thing won't work for that long, people are just going to post and translate those work by YouTube, tumblr or sites like that...

Epecially after knowing that the websites won't shut down..

Doubt it.

If you look only 80 anime series are even being targetted.

This is really a crusade against manga scanslating because japan has realized nobody is willing to spend 9.99 to own a fucking 5 minute worth of reading book with pictures.

It's not the 80 Anime titles I'm worried about. No matter what they do, Anime will survive because it's shared via so many ways (direct download, streaming, torrents, IRC, p2p) and it's easy enough to re-upload everything because there are more fansub groups, more websites, more people who care about it generally.... Not only that.. The torrent sites they're targeting have never been known to concede to such "requests" of *Take this down for copyright infringement please* like KickassTorrents or TPB *as if anyone actually downloads Anime from TPB* and Rutracker :3

It's the FIVE FRIGGIN' HUNDRED Manga series that frighten me...

If I were the Japanese government, I would naturally target Manga because it's easier and more effective. That's why the difference in the numbers of targeted Manga/Anime series is huge ! And not only that.... They're targeting websites from different countries ! I see Mein Manga in the list (German) and I see the top English-language online-reading sites and I see the top RAW JAPANESE sites, too.

Mein Manga is the only German site I've ever found that's a bit satisfying, for some reason. So no one will care about saving it.
English-language sites will pull through, no matter what. At least one or two. It is certain.

Raw Manga sites.... NOT SO SURE. They can look up any title in Google and open all resulting pages and there the links will be ! They can click on any of the links (say, Freakshare, or TurboBit, etc) and send the request for the website which will naturally take the files down. It always happens. That's why I'm most worried about Raw Manga. That's why their focus is on Manga, because it's actually effective. And Manga takes longer time to be re-uploaded, it really does :"| It's like their targeting Anime is just a test...

I'm planning to start a download festival and save as many raw manga series as I can (at least the ones I care about most and don't have). If anyone else is interested, I'll start an independent thread. This may (and may not) be as frightening as I imagine :|

Don't blame me for so much piracy.... I live in a place isolated enough in terms of availability of stuff (books in other languages, DVDs) and I have yet to find a translated Manga series :D and that's why everything we buy is pirated. *bought The Sims 3 for the equivalent of 1$ *

the Internet is LITERALLY my source of life.

They can click on any of the links (say, Freakshare, or TurboBit, etc) and send the request for the website which will naturally take the files down. It always happens. That's why I'm most worried about Raw Manga.

*bought The Sims 3 for the equivalent of 1$ *

the Internet my source of life.

Yeah, these 5 months for Manga will be hard

As I said before, good luck with that Japan. It won't change a thing.

I saw Youtube on that list, and that worries me :/

Also, do we know what the targeted works are?
