I finally decided to dig into this series. I won't give a rating just yet. It's pretty clear that many things will be revealed in future installments.
The philosophical bits were pretty good so far. We even had the classic "butterfly dream," although he was a dragonfly watching a butterfly this time. The very first exchange felt very weird though. Half of it made no sense: 'Time is flowing in reverse in the building. The former tenants are stuck in the building, but they're going back to the building. Time is only reversing because of their memories.' And then the second half was just obvious: 'People can become obsessed with memories of the past. In a way, people don't completely die as long as they reside in the memories of others.'
A lot of what Touko says is very long-winded and a little too high-falutin, but it's at least still saying something profound. So we only had one case of this common problem in trying to write deeply philosophical passages, and that could very well have been due to difficulty translating it. After all, rearrange the words a bit and she's clearly referencing the case. I can't wait to see more of Touko. She's sexy, she's making tons of lifelike dolls that look like Shiki, and she'll probably say interesting things.
I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of Shiki too. Looks like the next one will talk about her past. She's a badass with a fake arm, a magic dagger, and soul(?) powers. The only thing that really didn't make sense about her was how she managed to jump off a skyscraper, across the street, and onto another roof. At first I was like, 'Oh, she jumped down, so she'd have more time to fall forward.' But then I was like, 'Wait, that's still a crazy high drop.' I'm assuming she did it with her magic powers or something. It looked really cool either way.
I definitely feel bad for Fujou. She was so pretty that I wanted them to recruit her. It looks like we'll get at least one more mainstay waifu too though. I wonder what she's like.
I'm sure I'll understand the plot better later, but as far as I can gather, this is what happened: Terminally ill Fujou lost her entire family. Other schoolgirls that used to live in the same apartment building would visit her when they got sick or injured. Fujou was always jealous of them being able to "fly" in their lives, and she eventually even lost her sight too. Her obsession with retaining the last pleasure in her life (the scenery from the hospital window) awakened some kind of astral projection powers. She realized that some of the other girls had that ability too, but their abilities weren't as strong. Frustrated with her inability to make friends even now, she realized she could command (suggest) the sleeping bodies of the girls to sleepwalk to their old apartments. Once there Fujou's spirit had strong enough ties to physically drag the girls if they struggled or hypnotize them if they awakened. Once dead, only their astrally projected souls remained as Fujou's friends, and she also got the pleasure in relishing that they couldn't ACTUALLY fly either. Only Shiki's arm could be possessed because it was a prosthetic and not protected by her soul powers, and her improved arm was more resistant for some reason. Sleepy boy made contact with Fujou somehow (I'm not even sure it physically happened) because he likes broken girls (dolls). And Fujou kidnapped(?) his soul because she was jealous that he gave flowers to injured girl(s?) (Shiki?) that he visited in the hospital. Or potentially he was offering flowers for the victims at the apartment. Either way, she wanted him to offer her that same attention/affection. Touko somehow knew all of this and who Fujou actually was, and Shiki has some sort of prior knowledge or experience of this kind of phenomenon.
The nuts and bolts were solid. Music, graphics, animation, atmosphere, direction, design, scene composition... all top tier. When stories are intentionally vague and mysterious like this, it can be a major letdown when the author finally has to start answering questions. I sincerely hope that isn't the case here.
This is at least a 9 for now. Potentially higher. |
