I thought it was pretty good episode. There are obviously using Gundam tropes but I think it uses them well. Everything from the animation and the music was great. Also nice twist at the end. Overall, I will definitely be watching this. Definitely better than Majestic Prince by far. I think it is up there with Gargantia at least for me. I NEED THAT OPENING!

That's SO not the anime way of doing things. All real life logic gets left at the door. ;)

Anyway as many pointed it out, this show does have a Code Geass/Gundam feel. The vampire aspects have me intrigued, so I'm going to stick with it.

Personally, I think Gargantia is the stronger series of the two based on my first impressions.

Cool, I guess I got the L/R condition from listening to too much Japanese these days ;-)

So do you agree that L-11 said "Lieselotte" not "D-Zero" after he stabbed and shot the MC?

To me, it sounds like "D-Zeroって". って=tte in Japanese, which is the short form of と/と言います. (Although, there are other uses of ~tte....) It's usually referring to quotations. So, it's like, "I win again, D-Zero." Edit: And to be clear, I've replayed this scene many times and he always says "D-Zero" to me.

I really need to brush up on my JLPT level 3 Japanese.... My semester ended before covering this.

Remember L-11 got upset when he overheard the MC talk about better to share not to fight to win or lose? He got pretty tense when he told the MC that if you are pushed back you have to fight and not let go. I wonder if this has any link to the person Lieserotte he mentioned later.

The name D-Zero did stand out to me as well, since the German word for "zero" is "null" and so, shouldn't it have been D-null?

The thing that really stood out to me with the confrontation between L-11 and the MC, was the word "half". That word really seemed to resonate with L-11 and they emphasized it by having it repeated. Then he talked about separating things that shouldn't be separated, and I kept thinking back to the German/Space Nazi motif they seem to have going here and maybe "half" has more to do with his background or was a slur used on him as a child? Like he was a "half-breed" or something?

Its just a theory, but for something that would totally take his mind off the mission like that, it had to be a serious open wound from his past, or a large chip on his shoulder.

This episode was SO GUNDAM SEED.

Im still wondering where is Kira Yamato (aka god) and Athrun Zala...

We even had TM Revolution in the op. Maybe we'll soon discover that the protagonist is a newtype/coordinator.

- I think L-11 said D-Zero which seems like a codename similar to them. So it's a possibility that he knew the MC beforehand and held some kind of grudge judging from his actions. We will just have to wait for the next episodes.

That was my initial impression when he first said, "D-Zero". If this was the case, he pretended real well on not being familiar with Hirato. (Like a Road Kamelot scenario, which is only understandable if you read D.Gray-Man manga. A character who
. I mentioned this earlier in this thread, but I doubt everyone reads the responses to their posts here.)

Another scenario is the codename given to whoever becomes this Valvrave's pilot, but, that's a bit too simple/boring to me. Giving Hirato this codename makes sense though in the form of a grudge due to Haruto's "neutral" personality. "Hey! I hate your pacifist peaceful thinking mindset!! I'll demote you to null cause that suits you! HA!!" =__=;; Yet, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case. (Valvrave's staff are DGM fans, but I doubt they'll put any of Hoshino's ideas into play here...., which are a lot more interesting than most Sunrise anime for sure. I'll give them Valvrave's vampire thing, which is clearly a Hoshino influence.)

We'll definitely have to wait and see.

Edit:

Interesting to note. There is a word to call mixed Japanese people, which is simply borrowing the English word, "half". So, it comes off as "ハーフ" (haafu).

That was pretty exciting! It's very overdramatic but that's what I love about Sunrise shows. It was interesting how the robot asked him to relinquish his humanity, and then the two needles probed him. I cringed there. It was a nice touch to the episode. AND OMG JUST WATCHED THE ENDING HE'S A VAMPIRE?!?!?

I'm pretty sure D-Zero was a mistake on gg's part, because IMO it sounds more like he's saying Lieselotte or something.

Edit: And Crunchy's subs have "Lieselotte" as well.

Hmm.. Well, it can go either way in this case if Crunchy's subs are different. (I wouldn't trust Crunchy's subs as much as GG's in other words.) =__=;; In my ears, it sounds exactly how a Japanese person would say, "D-Zero". I don't know German so I have no say in "Lieselotte".

It would be great if someone has access to a Japanese forum, and ask someone there exactly what they thought L-11 said. Although, I could also do a katakana Google sweep.

- What is the effect of being bitten: From the OP (ED in this episode), we can be sure L-11 will not die from this attack. So what is the effect of being bitten? Will it create certain master-slave relationship like in some vampire story? Or some other kind of dependency for the bitten?

I thought of that too, especially as you see L-11 dressed in the school uniform in more scenes of the OP then any of his teammates. Is there a reason he has to stay at the school? Will Haruko have some sort of hold over him? Is L-11 now bound by Haruko's will? We'll just have to see.

Actually Valvrave was already red when we first see it. It was red and white with neon green "wings". Once the MC interfaced with it, and it activated, the white parts of the mech turned black.

And actually it's then that we can see the first evidence of whatever was injected into Haruko since not only do his eyes go dead, but he can automatically expertly pilot the machine and most interestingly of all, his broken arm is suddenly healed and he can now use it to pilot.
My money is on nanomachines that are connected to Valvrave and thus connect pilot to mech.

Already done so. A search for ディーゼロ ヴァルヴレイヴ (D-Zero Valvrave) only turned up one hit and that's in regards to the card game Dimension Zero, whereas a search for リーゼロッテ ヴァルヴレイヴ (Lieselotte Valvrave) turned up 440 hits.

Also the second hit (http://hibikidgs.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-1627.html) has this line in big bold text: 俺は、また勝ったよ。リーゼロッテ。

Or in romaji, "Ore wa, mata katta yo. Riizerotte (Lieselotte)."

If you'll listen to the audio after the OP sequence that is exactly what L-Elf says after he stabbed and shot Haruto.

@Chxistine: I have to disagree on a little bit there. L-11 and his group of psychos pilot different suits judging by the op including a huge mobile armor. Also there are six of them including L-11. So i am betting on the MC's friends piloting the Valvraves rather than them. Well that's what i think anyway.

I did also just notice that in the OP that the Dorssia teens ARE NOT piloting the other 4 Valvrave mecha. They are piloting white/colored/pastel mechs and strangely enough, I played the OP more slowly and noticed that they never show L-11 in a pilot uniform. Nor do they show him piloting. They show 4 white/colored mecha being piloted by the other 4 guys on the Dorssia team: X-1, H-9, A-3, and Q-4, but never L-11. Why? Did he not get a mech since he failed the mission of capturing the Valvrave?

And I did see the extra large white/gold bird-like mech shown at the end of the OP, but I have a feeling that belongs to Cain (the Char clone with the eyepatch).

We'll find out eventually. It makes sense if he was intending to ride that red Valvrave. Would explain why he's shown without one even at the end of the OP. Although, it would feel a bit weird to not see him in one (to me)? (Unless, the "bite" represents a connection....)

After going on the official site, I see they have 5 Valvraves including the one Haruko pilots. However, they are numbered Valvrave 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6. What the heck happened to Valvrave 2? And who are their pilots? Are we going to have 4 other vampires walking around the show here? Or would they do something unprecedented and have Haruko pilot ALL of them either mentally or just going out one machine at a time? Just thinking....

the OP also have 4 other academy kids in flight gear inside a cockpit. You can't be sure they're piloting the other Valvraves, but those shots are just before the shots of the Valvraves, so I think so. Jock guy, glasses guy, redhead girl, and a blonde which by the angle I can't be sure is a boy or girl, but looking at the characters we've seen in the epi, I'd bet on the laidback rich girl we see for the first time in the food contest scene.

Those weren't the academy kids, that's L-11's team. Look at them clearly. Firstly, their cockpits nor their pilots uniforms match that of the Valvrave mechs.

Jock guy is actually the blond H-9, Glasses guy is X-1, Redhead is Q-4, and the other blond is actually the white-haired A-3. (you can see his braid on one side)
They are piloting the 4 machines we saw right before that.
We have yet to see Valvrave 3,4,5,and 6's pilots.

Gundam 00 and Code Geass do come up in this as far as I can see it. Just hope the plot is as well thought out as it was in CG. And the battle scenes from 00 will also be as magnificent as they to be in the upcoming episodes.

Haaaa, okay, so another mecha show this season, how should I put this ...

The start of the story is quite ok, I have seen this plot repeated a thousand times before lol (well because it is from sunrise probably). It begins with blood and this seems really interesting, made me think that this gonna be good.

Buuuut, when I got to know the personality of the mc, it was a turn off, another pussy peace lover with some kind of anti-conflict delusion. Another thing is that the plot is really predictable, but well, killing of the girl right away is quite good. Next, the reason for him to pilot that mecha seems cheesy, it isn't interesting at all. Well, I know that the person you love die in front of you hurt, but ... oh hey, that is one big ass cool looking robot, how about I get in there and take revenge for my girl ... meh!

Hold on, did he just pilot that without any experience at all? Ahhhh, it seems like after you answer a certain question it injects you some stuffs that make you know how to control a robot (ROFL). In addition, the control screen ... damn, well do they have to make it looks like a game, with some girl floating on the corner, make the whole thing seems less serious. And talking about serious, there are girls with oversize boobs, although this is not bad but consider the context of this anime, it doesn't go along at all.

The bgm, in some part, for me, doesn't go quite well with the scene (like when the robots start the attack). It is hard to explain, but it makes the situation less enjoyable. The after battle seems like the producer doesn't want to make the show serious at all, people seems to accept the fact that they was attacked and rescued quite easy lol!

The ending, yeah, quite shocking, the mc seems like a vampire, nice!!!! Oh well. Anyway, I'm out, not gonna say this is a bad show cause I only see one ep, but it is just not my thing.

P/s: I feel really sorry for you mr.captain of the robot squad, you just get your ass kicked with some dude that happened to pilot a fucking imba robot without any war experience at all!

This show was pretty standard for a mecha show's first episode, Haruto being a "vampire-thingy" at the end surprised me.

I'm also surprised they killed off, or teased atleast, Haruto's initial love interest. Shoko is on a lot of promo art for the series so surely she will still be around.

So if not human, what is he now exactly? The end suggest some sort of vampire. :P
