This background for Natsuki's Father question was also very well placed, indeed.

Where is this episode in the novel?
I feel like reading the LN but if I have too many volume to read before catching up to the anime then I'll probably end up doing it after this season is finished.

I loved this episode, I didn’t know anything about Subaru’s life before he got to the fantasy world, but, it’s literally, a whole episode of Subaru’s development as a character, his relationship with his father, his mother and his feelings through not feeling that especial, the nature of his personality. I the episode didn’t have that dream atmosphere of white colors; it could’ve been better. Echidna in the end, is a sign of the test. Well, this kind of demons were meant with “face your past”. Subaru’s family is very cool.

That was such a good episode! I'm honestly bawling my eyes out right now because all of that hit so close to home. I need to go call my parents and tell them I love them and cuddle with my cat.

There's a surprising amount of droolers in this thread who seemingly hate character development and backstory, and want nothing but gore and action. Which is strange because Re:Zero has always had a fair amount of dialogue, so I don't know why NOW, all of a sudden, it's an issue.

w0w! so is this whole episode just a fabrication made by Echidna?! that's pure suffering and toying with him!
and i thought after this episode, Subaru would gain character development..oh man! this is relentless and unforgiving pain!

I find Subaru relatable. About a year ago, my school grades dropped drastically, but I maintained my image in school as a joker, because I feared people will look down on me. I began hating the real world because of how chaotic it is and worried my future will be ruined by it. So I made my own fantasy world and it made me happy. But as I kept building my fantasy world, my own world slowly fell apart. My teachers are starting to notice a change in personality in me.

Months passed, I feel like going to school is a total waste of time. There is nothing I can do except making jokes all day over there. I loved my fantasy world more than real life, so I started to get depressed, and the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown made it worse. I spent 3 months at home alone, trying to think of my future and figure out a reason to continue to fight for a living in this world.

I realized I was stuck between 2 worlds. Unlike Subaru, who is entirely in the fantasy world, I am stuck in between, struggling to put in effort to make both lives in both worlds work, and it is not going well for my mental health.

Today, I am not as depressed as I was a few months ago, but I'm still figuring out myself what can I do to survive in this world, while also trying to know the difference between reality and fantasy. Maybe it is my worries of this chaotic world made me destroy my own future.

I was hoping this episode to make me cry, but it didn't. But that doesn't mean it's bad. This has been the most emotional episode in this season so far. We got to see Subaru's past and he got the chance to talk to his parents which is very touching. It deserves 5/5.

I just want to say that if this were the final episode of the series (with the difference that he definitely returns to the real world and enters school with his classmates and everything), it would have been incredible and FINALLY a good ending in an anime and with a sense in all the way of it. A pity the waste.

Masterclass of an episode. And really relatable. We already knew Subaru was not the generic Isekai protagonist (being weak and heavily-flawed). But it's nice to have a grasp of how he was before being isekai'd (and finally an isekai MC who remembers that he has parents!)

Wow. Despite being 30 minutes, that went by so fast. What a beautiful episode. The growth of Subaru's character is phenomenal, I almost cried when his father said to take care of them when they get old. Not only did Subaru reflect on one of the most important aspects of life, his parents, but also me as well. I was annoyed at first at how there's no OP again this episode but I'm glad they removed that after seeing this.

very well done episode Subaru has? or had some great parents no wonder i felt like a lot more time had pass in my evening anime watching didn't even realize this was 30mins long.

totally forgot how crappy Subaru was before this all started goes to show how much hes grown from being sent to another world.

ED is great and the last scene shocked but not that shocked,Subaru's death count has been insanely low for re zero standards so i feel that changing soon

That "itterashai" hit harder than anything else. When Subaru's father says- "Take care of us when we become old" this single line gave me ocean of feels. Still there are some dumbfuck retards in real life world who abandon their parents in old age homes. Re Zero has definitely become my #1 isekai after this episode.

I still don't trust anything leading Subaru to Emilia, it's those eerie zoom in to the smiles that wave like red flags. Nice to see the real world Subaru and how he is as a person vs the character he's played for the role he was set in, White Fox is impressing me episode felt longer too which was nice.

New episode of Re:Zero:

I hate how this show is written, a gamma of great characters: Emilia, Rem, Ram, Crusch, even Echidna showing great promise with just one episode, and yet the author writes terribly the protagonist, seems like almost an unwritten rule of isekai "thou shalt write the lamest protagonist so on & so forth". I am far more interested in Granhiert, Barielle or Felt, that didn't even appear this season so far, than Subaru.

Stories are entertainment.

Its done gradually throughout the story happens when they decide when it is appropriate.

The first 18 episodes of season 1 of Re: Zero were, according to fans, a "prologue meant to develop Subaru." The first step in character development is to give the character a backstory to justify why they are the way they are; not develop the character, THEN give them a backstory that justifies their behavior.
The author could've easily done this:

Dedicated ep 1 of season 1 to Subaru's backstory; show his life from his childhood, up to him being 17.
Have him isekai'd, but make it so that he still has issues with his past.
Then in episode 18 or somewhere beyond, have him confront that past.

Jagd84 said:
This episode works because of everything we have seen Subaru do up to now & only could happen becasue of nature of the current condition.

There was 0 buildup to this episode. Before episode 18 of season 1, the anime spent several episodes jamming in the point to your face that Subaru was pathetic, and that he himself felt he was pathetic. While I have major issues with episode 18 (mainly for how hammy it was), at least it was a climax to a decent buildup.
But in episode 4 of season 2, the reveal of Subaru's backstory AND him coming to terms with his past happens in the exact same episode, making it incredibly rushed.
Imagine if in Naruto, Naruto matured in a single episode, rather than gradually throughout the series.
Imagine if Guts from Berserk went from being a traumatized, cold-hearted, bloodthirsty killer, to a better person in a single episode, rather than the series gradually showing this.
Imagine if Naruto monologued about how he was discriminated against, rather than the show actually showing him being discriminated against.

Jagd84 said:
The trial facing your past afterall. If one liikes the show story to begin with none of this would be an issue.

The dialogue in this series is awful: characters constantly overemphasize their thoughts, repeat information that they already know to info dump the audience. As others have pointed out, this episode was shoving how "cool" Subaru's dad was, and how close he was to him, to your face. You can like a show, while still having issues with it. I love Date a Live, but I can make tons of criticism of it.

Jagd84 said:
That fact you think any of it was forced and hammy means there no pleasing you nor was is it going to the first place.

So...anyone who criticizes this episode is automatically someone who came to it negatively biased?

Do you mean "no reason"? I've spent paragraphs after paragraphs on this site explaining my issues with this series; including the past episode discussions of season 2. And yet you are generalizing all my thoughts that I've spent hours justifying, as me being "contrarian."

misterreicchi said:

I think the reason why the drama, for some, may have come off as cringey, is because it occurs in the same episode that it's resolved in.

Why is it that when, on MAL, someone finds a non-action episode boring, without spending paragraphs justifying why they found it boring, people immediately come to the conclusion that they only like action and gore?

I will add, however, that the dialogue seems heavy-handed at times? I'm not sure if it's awkward because of the translation or if the characters repeat themselves a lot for emphasis. I didn't cry at this episode, though I did feel really bad for Subaru. I'm withholding my opinion on this season for now. It's still too early.

A MUST WATCH EPISODE!!!!
When Re zero became a SLICE OF LIFE GENRE... hahaha

anyways this episode is so beautiful and emotional and it even make me nearly to cry in some part of this 29 min episode...

the episode talks about the real past life of Subaru, from his childhood days up to present and you could see that from being the "BEST"version of himself to being a typical not stand out guy. THE PRESSURE really is with him since the people around him during his childhood days says "you really are his son...", then suddenly he is not being the best version of himself making him so sad and depress up to the point he is not going to his class.

BUT THANKS TO HIS LOVING FATHER AND MOTHER... THEY ARE ALWAYS THERE TO GUIDE AND SUPPORT HIM. the LINES THAT both of his parents said to him are very touching...

THe scenes where it nearly made me eye teary is all about when he is asked by his dad if he have someone he like... THE REASON HE DID CHANGE accrdg to the episode itself is because of the 2 girls he have met in his life--- NAMELY EMILIA AND REM... and in the episode it flashed some quotes or statements that Rem and emilia have said that make subaru a BETTER PERSON...

THATS WHY WORDS SOMETIMES CAN MAKE A PERSON CHANGED... ALONGSIDE WITH ACTIONS AND EFFORT A SPECIFIC PERSON IS DOING, it will help that person to be better...

I mean, it was nice to see his past and the way he has developed, but it was just too long for me, I would have preferred the past scene to take only half the episode, I felt tempted to fast forward at least three times.
Also, I'm not a fan of this op-less episodes we are having.

yes but when this show goes from the torture porn or those fights (petelgeuse fight/whale fight) to some chatting or development everyone goes VROOOOOOOOM because they still wanna see death, gore, torture and so on...but this thing doesn't work on a long run because after some time will no longer be entertaining to see some meat bags dying just for the sake of it....they need development and some of them got it (more or less) but those people must understand that with violence and gore nothing can be solved in the long run. Also comedy is not the strenght point of this show but still demanding only butchering is no good for a long term

What an interesting and slicey episode we got.

Didn't expect this kind of episode in a show like this, but I loved it, being the slice of life nerd that I am. Absolutely loved the voices from Subaru's parents. Ryouka Yuzuki keeps on being one of my favorite actresses.

I also don't like Subaru as a main romantic protagonist, but he's one clever guy. And he presses on. He's not perfect, and he admits it. Having a background story is what I needed to respect him just a bit more. To be honest, I just love his mother.

Waiting for the next episode. Great season so far.

Awts. Subaru's Dad reminds me of Maes Hughes, because they are both energetic and doing their best to cheer up their child. This episode was a tear-jerker. It sheds more light to Subaru's character. It really saddens me to think that will Subaru meet his parents again. Overall this is a great episode and I also loved the ED.

Or they do get it and it reminds them too much of everyday life, others seem to like it exactly because of how realistic it is. No MC like Ichigo Kurasaki here, the benevolent, extroverted, likeable, hardworking, popular standard shonen protagonist. Subaru reminds us of ourselves trying to hide from school, managing the expectations of others, not knowing whether he wants his parents strict or benevolent or both and he realises how lonely he really is/was.

Whether you love this episode or find it boring, probably depends on your current state of mind. :)

I kinda like bond Subaru have with his parents

Subaru father is nice guy and good parent Though he is very weird I like him a lot.  He is probably stress and panicking right now that Natsuki subaru dissapear. Or he might have keep his cool but will eventually lose it now that his son dissapear for so long. Same for subaru mother. She is probably stress and panicking right now that Natsuki subaru dissapear

Hope subaru reniuted with his dad and his mom again.

If subaru have too choose of staying in re zero world or go back to original world? Can he choose?

So Subaru is living a simulation/dream of his past?

Damn, Subaru's Dad and Mom are way too loveable! One of the best parents in Isekai anime ever.

When Subaru opened up to his dad, I was so shocked to see how relatable I find Subaru to be. Glad to see his character developing even more in S2.

Why did the dad have to request Subaru to take care of them when they are old? God damn it! The feels!!!!!

Mom is too cute. I just CAN'T!

And here comes the second feels train... That Itterashai shot straight at my heart.

Ngl, Echidna in school uniform is kinda cute.

We finally got to see the ED!

I never expected that Re: Zero of all things would make me cry, but it did. Twice. In the same episode. Goddamn. Best episode so far, not just of season 2 or summer season, but quite possibly the entire 2020. This has to be or of the best episodes I have seen which came out this year. Keep it up Re:Zero!

Just realized that since everything here was not real, the last thing Subaru's mom ever said to him was "Take care", and Subaru didn't even answer back. And I think I read somewhere that the author confirmed that his parents are in depression and keep on trying to find Subaru every day. The feels just got 10 times worse :(

Finally i can see this scene being animated. The pacing in this 29 mins episode is good, didnt feel rushed. And the ED is good too~
Overall, enjoyed it!
Can't wait to see next scene to be animated~

Best line in this episode :
"...next time, you should make us happy, my son" -Dad
"...i gave birth to you because i want to give something to you" -Mom

(ps: dunno why there's much duplicate posts here...)

RTBD does not tear Subaru into pieces; his deaths are caused by external sources. Because of Subaru's power, he never has to worry about permanently dying. Because of his power, he can defeat almost anyone, because he has unlimited chances to retry, he can gain as much info as he can from his enemies.
Yes, return by death does not tear Subaru into pieces, but it requires him to die. Except for one death (arc 2 when he died in his sleep) all other were painful. If you think that not fearing death and the pain should be a normal thing for Subaru, then I don't know what to say to you.

There is a character with a broken power in Re:Zero but it's not Subaru.
