Obligatory Ghost Stories, but also FLCL to the point where the only reason Progressive and Alternative were made was because Adult Swim requested it.

Most of Naruto`s popularity comes from the west. The same for Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, and DBZ.

Naruto, Evangelion and Dragon Ball are mega popular in Japan.

One word: Nichijou.

while most other mentions here are usually more than one season (which means they were at least popular enough in Japan to get season 2,3,4 and so on), Nichijou got only one season. It is the only one-season show that comes to my mind when we talk about obscurity in Japan and popularity in the West.

Isn't one piece and Gintama is less popular in west?(bnha is far more popular)
Does western has any taste in anime??

As long as the west doesn't have Kimetsu no Yaiba as their number 1, then their taste is currently better. BnHA is also awful and overrated but at least it isn't to the absurd level as Kimetsu no Yaiba is in Japan. I have lost my faith in the Japanese people.
I definitely second this lol, bnha and demon slayer = utter garbage

While I agree manga is far more mainstream in Japan, in terms of anime Naruto is very much a normie series in the west like with DBZ. Naruto merchandise is so mainstream in the west you can find stuff from the series at Walmart.

I know Deadman Wonderland sold terribly in Japan but idk about how it sold everywhere else.
I feel like it was quite popular for a fair amount anywhere outside of Japan.

Evangelion is very mainstream in Japan and so is Dragon Ball and Naruto...Right now the Demon Slayer thing is absolutely everywhere but I am sure it was similar with Naruto in it's biggest peak. I didn't see that though because I moved to Japan in 2019. But I doubt you would have an easy time finding a Japanese person who has never heard about Naruto...unless they are 3.
And please, I even watched a whole EVA themed fountain show in Fukuoka and the normies who were passing by were like "look! Rei Ayanami!" and many were singing along to A Cruel Angel's Thesis...

Japan is too busy ejaculating over bottom tier garbage such as Kimetsu no Yaiba it makes one wonder if Japan ever had any sense of taste at all. Especially considering that outside of a handful of trash, their most popular works are decided by westerners.

You are acting as if most animes western people like is any better. The average popular anime is trash, regardless of who likes it or what part of the world makes it popular. Its just that the average person's standards are extremely low and they'd act as if something is a masterpiece just because it contains action, nudity or dumb sol moments. People started caring about Kimetsu primarly because of episode 19, even though the entire theme was redundant, unoriginal, and other than the animation that Ufotable provided, had nothing to offer... same could be said about so many other animes.

Big O and FLCL

Heavy hitters on OG Cartoon Network and not in Japan, season 2 of Big O was funded quite a bit from Cartoon Network.

Go-Lion

Forgotten in Japan, but has a worldwide following as Voltron.

Space Dandy

It's an afterthought inside of Japan, but popular in the West.

I saw an interview of Oshii talking about Ghost in the Shell not really popping off until its western release.

I knew about Trigun and Bebop, but I think you're off the mark on Eva and Dragon Ball. They have Eva cafes and arcades in Japan! Here we weren't even allowed to watch it legally after its original airing until Netflix "did it". Dragon Ball seems off to me because Goku was going to be Japan's mascot for the Olympics!
