| One word: Nichijou. while most other mentions here are usually more than one season (which means they were at least popular enough in Japan to get season 2,3,4 and so on), Nichijou got only one season. It is the only one-season show that comes to my mind when we talk about obscurity in Japan and popularity in the West. |

I didn't see that though because I moved to Japan in 2019. But I doubt you would have an easy time finding a Japanese person who has never heard about Naruto...unless they are 3. And please, I even watched a whole EVA themed fountain show in Fukuoka and the normies who were passing by were like "look! Rei Ayanami!" and many were singing along to A Cruel Angel's Thesis... |

I knew about Trigun and Bebop, but I think you're off the mark on Eva and Dragon Ball. They have Eva cafes and arcades in Japan! Here we weren't even allowed to watch it legally after its original airing until Netflix "did it". Dragon Ball seems off to me because Goku was going to be Japan's mascot for the Olympics! |
