Neptunia? Typical fan service but nothing canon. I have played many console games and none have had lesbian protagonists.

Same, never heard of Neptunia as a Lesbian character in fact there is nothing other than a couple fan service scenes.
As well outside of characters who have the choice of male and female love interests, Dragon Age Inquisition, Fable 3, mass effect 3 are a couple of games I can think of but you can choose male of female love interest there based upon your chosen gender at the start...

Western games are invaded by american porn imagery and get their fair share of random lez/bi women without the help or influence of Japan.

I'll just mention Mass Effect 2.

Actually, Mass Effect 2 took some huge backlash because every girl was bi except Mirada (I think) but there was 0 male homosexuality, that's why they fixed it in the third. To be honest, I played the game, and it was ridiculous. Most discussions felt like I was playing a yuri dating simulator.

Portraying homosexuality is slowly becoming more accepted in the gaming industry (and in general in the western hemisphere). Most game developers and game writers are straight males, and their target audience is almost always straight males. Many (most?) straight males like lesbians; therefore lesbian protagonist = win for everyone involved (and by everyone I mean straight males).

Actually, while Femshep can flirt with Jack and Samara, it can go nowhere because they are not cool with it. The only legit lesbian romances are Liara and Chambers, the latter of which hardly counts as a romance. Your comments actually fit Dragon Age 2 a lot more.

Because most video games are primarily targeting a male audience and a lot of men find lesbians hot, just like a lot of women find gay males hot

If the primary target audience had been women then we would have seen more gay male protagonists instead

It's as simple as that
Usually to push some kind of political agenda. There's no real reason to ever make protagonists gay, homosexuals are an extreme minority (3.6% of the total population I believe in the US) so pandering to such a crowd simply isn't profitable, nor does such a sexuality add to a game in any meaningful way.
Please

Not everything is a SJW conspiracy

If anything a lot of SJWs would be against the inclusion of lesbians in video games "targeting a straight male audience"

That's pretty neat, I didn't really notice! Been playing too many character select/create-based games, I guess.
I suppose it has to do with what the majority of players like to see. I mean, when you put on a scale the amount of people who want to see female protag fall into the arms of A: cute girl, or B: some dude, I'd say the former carries more weight.

Why not? She clearly has a female appearance, even though she is supposedly "genderless".

Has anybody ever seen a good scripted homosexual romance in games? A lot of the time, most of them seem to be homosexual for the sake of being homosexual.

The female video game protagonists that are lesbians are still in the minority, really. All things considered, a lot of writers are probably writing homosexual characters now because there weren't a lot before, and there was a demand for homosexual characters that they proceeded to fulfill.

Because these relationships stand out to us, they're perhaps more scrutinized than other romances that came before. Some may not be well-written, but that's because a lot of romances aren't. Look at heterosexual romances in video games, most of those aren't well-written at all. That's largely because game designers aren't writers, and some studios could do with a writer or two on their team.

Who's Neptune? Neptune from Sailor Moon or Neptune from Hyperdimension Neptunia?

Since, Neptune from Hyperdimension Neptunia isn't a lesbian. Those are probably fanfics.

As for the others, they're actually a minority.

To be more "diverse" or "inclusive" or some other meaningless buzzword.
Developers will do anything to score some points in the diversity department, even if said diversity seems out of place. And making a lesbian character is probably more appealing because some people are always complaining about female representation, and the lesbian part is probably because some people are complaining about LGBT representation, but the company fears that having a gay male lead would hurt sales and so having a lesbian is playing it safe.

Not sure what the gay-straight ratio of female protagonists are though, not sure if Samus or Lara are lesbian, just as an example.

But basically I think we've come to a point where devs will do anything to be diverse. Such as having a trans character in Assassin's Creed Syndicate and nobody seems to care! I doubt being trans was that accepted in Victorian England. But eh, anything to be more diverse I guess.

This is a bad example, since the entire game pretty much is all Cute girls anyways.

Most games that I have played rarely contain any kind of Homosexual couples.

Only games that has lesbian are Saints Row, Maybe GTA, Some game back in the 90's or 00's that had a lesbian scene in an elevator, and the Japanese Ero Games.

you would have never said this if almost every male characters were gay.

hypocrite.

I'd be fine with gay male leads. Heck I ship Nate and Sully since they have more of a thing than Nate and Elena do to me
