Woah, first of all, the OP and ED are breathtaking. ED especially.

I thought Ichigo was gonna be the generic emotionless type. I was pleasantly surprised.

This show is a bit more...heh, lewd than I thought it'd be. Not that I'm complaining though haha

All in all, the first ep seemed a bit generic but after seeing this one I'm sittin' down, strappin' myself in and pluggin' my joysticks into my 2D girl's mecha thigh thingies cuz I can tell this show is gonna be a ride

I wonder if kissing is on-purposely hidden from the pilots by the officials? I liked how it used the concept of using connections to viably control the mecha, and I can see how there might be a subtext relating to sex, although that hasn't really impressed me so far. I felt pretty bad for Ichigo.

This dude would be a good match up for the food loving girl in LWA.

Depends on what you consider children. I don't consider the cast from Darling in the Franxx as children, so yeah, i'm very much ok with them being sexualized.

Uhmmmmmmmmmm first of all in the synopsis the MC is described as a BOY but putting that aside these people are 16 years old MAX and you're a 24-year-old man. You know there is a word for that right?

What? First of all, i said the max age of these characters is 16 but I seriously doubt they are. And if you don't see the problem with somebody in their mid-20s looking at a 13-16 year old in a sexual light than you've been out of touch with reality for a very long time.

1. So "boy" equals "child" now? Okaaaaay....
2. "MAX"? Well that's like you're opinion man. Even if that's their age, that's not children anymore but young adults.
3. No idea what word you're talking about. The boyfriend of one of my best female friends was 29 when she was 17. They were together for about 3-4 years. To me, from about 16 years onwards, you should be able to choose whoever the hell you want for a relationship if it is consentual.

Who is the strong woman, 002? We don't know if she's really strong or just shows a strong facade to hide some emotional weakness (that's a pretty typical trope after all).

Everybody is about to sit here and talk about how it’s “ tropey “ when they don’t understand every character in every series starts off as some type of trope and is fleshed out into their own person . Usually when they do a mock battle for the first time the MC actually wins and this time he wasn’t even able to fight and failed miserably so the series isn’t generic .

1.) Who describes a grown man as a boy?
2.) It's clear the age group is 13-16 and short of you being alive in the 750s no one would describe that age demographic as "young adults".
3.)I'm sorry that I need to be the first person to tell you this but that is weird.

Gorou is a very good man and a very cool Bro to the MC, so I think he doesn't deserve such a disloyal and cheating girl like Ichigo as a partner.

If I am him, I no longer want to be partnered with a girl that has no hesitations kissing another guy. Go and fucking partner with Hiro if you like him so much !!! Of course, that is if Hiro even considers you as his Darling in the first place, as Hiro seems more attracted to Zero Two than Ichigo.

I hate Ichigo for betraying and cheating on Gorou, so I hope both Gorou and Zero Two would both cooperate and do a double beat-down on Ichigo. Fuck Ichigo ! She is now the girl I hate the most in Anime. Traitorous cheater ! I hope she dies in this show !

Yeah Gorou is best bro and i have a feeling that he will die in the future (I hope not lol) same here i don't like Ichigo, Zero Two is way more superior to her.

This anime seems to be like an anlogy for sex and the main character can't 'get it up'. So many phrases said this episode could be taken out of context and the way they pilot the mechs... oh jeez. Even the small mech he was using had an ass control wheel.

Soooo the reason why Hiro can't pilot the franxx is mainly bec. of the girls? They can't handle him

I mean looking at it...franxx can be piloted by two people.... the male will mainly take in charge of the movement while the girls will take the role of coordinating the guys movement to the franxx

and didn't the OP suggest that the franxx 002 pilot is code 000?

I adore how you can split every single shot in this into one of two categories: A-1 stuff and Trigger stuff. It so doesn't fit together, it comes out the other way and fits like it's glued.

I know it's bad for me and I should not like it if I value my own opinion about myself, but I want so see all of it, and pronto. It's obviously no miracle of Kiznaiver, quality-wise, but the Trigger people clearly remember that one time they've managed to trick people into thinking that Kill la Kill was deep.

Keep going, you beautiful bastards.

Precisely. This is fiction, made in a country that has different cultural standards than our own, even if the hypersexualization is the same. Like it or not, this series is in part a coming-of-age story that uses mecha as a lens through which to view and examine romantic, emotional, and physical relationships.

And since it's fiction, I see absolutely nothing wrong with doing this.

Guys, Darling in the FranXX is about SEX. Yes... S E X

But is not about the simple act of carnal conjunction, is about the psichoanalisis of sex. The all concept of the mechas, is psicoanalitical correct.

Let's go by parts:

First episode is about a concept in freudian studies about sexuality called INCOMPLETNESS; the human being is incomplete, and he always will sense incomplete. To fullfill these incompletness we have desires. The first desires we have are natural, search something to eat, some place to sleep, etc... then we feel sexually incomplete. The human being does not make sex just to reproduce, he makes it for pleasure, for fullfill his sexual desires, and mostly, TO FEEL COMPLETE. Than emerges a second concept in Freud's studies: SEX DRIVE. Manking searches for sex. Sex drive leads for another drive. LIFE DRIVE. Sex is basically a force that keeps us alive.

FranXX only can effectvely work with the completude of two beings. FranXX can only operate with sex. The piloting posture of the female is purposely sexual, we are not talking about shitty fanservice, THIS IS PSICOANALYTHICAL ACCURATE! The only way to pilot the robot is being one with your partner, being one with your partner is feel complete, feel complete is making sex, make sex is literally strip your individuality, your fears, your ego and trully understand the other in the sexual mechanics. This generates LIFE. The Robot becomes ALIVE with sex.

Hiro and Zero two have made the robot alive because they literelly saw each other stripped, and also they can trully understand each other, both of them are marginalized in the shows social structure, so the robot can trully work with them both. Otherwise, Hiro cannot make the robot work with Ichigo because they are not being sincere with one another, they are nothing giving themselfs completely to each other, they are making sex in the erong way. When your thoughts are in other place than your partner it will not work, it will be a bad experience. Both of them were thinking about Zero Two, one for being attracted to her, other for being jealous about her. And you all can see the same thing happening to Zorome and Miku when he says he wants to pilot another robot... he is thinking about another partner, so it will not work!

This show is using ordinary anime tropes to speak about sexuallity with their audience. This show has an even great premisse than in the last episode. They will talk openly about sex to an audience that is not used to have sex being discussed, where sex is pereversion, is wrong. Anime, even ecchi anime are mostly chaste, they only put erotic images but almost never passes the second base! Here we have an anime talking about sex psychology as a normal subject. THIS SHOW IS BOLD.

Unffortunatly, as we can see in this topic, many don't get it. Anime viewers are so used to shows that use sex just as a glimpse, mere erotic immagery to satisfy virgin teenagers that cannot see this show has a new approach in this subject. Remember people, the guys behind it did work on Evangelion, a show all based on pure psychoanalisis; the studio behind it is responsible for Kill la Kill, that adressed nudity as a serious way, not just fanservice.

Ok, it's the second episode, it can become a circus of pure fanservice, but I think people must have an open mind about it. Episode 2 shows that the crew know what they are doing. Not was unintended. GIVE THIS SHOW A TRY!

PS: Trully great Opening and an AMAZING ending!

Japanese anime fans, but that definition doesn't make the term justice because it's a lot more homogeneous demographic than western anime fans. To begin with, they're mostly male on their late 20's and early 30's and are willing to spend a lot of money on anime (note Japanese BDs are way more expensive that licensed BDs). You could think of them as compulsive fans. The late night anime market survives targeting this demographic because casual fans aren't willing to pay for their expensive BDs.

I'm not surprised. Visually and thematically this series is a lighter and softer (so far) spiritual successor to many of Gainax's best works, including Diebuster and Evangelion. All they really did was amplify the fanservice to suit, uh, "modern" tastes.

A further note to the others here. Please, for the sake of everyone else, do not spend your time wailing about how "oversexualized" this show is. If how the show depicts its characters for the purposes of its themes makes you uncomfortable, then perhaps you should not watch this show.

Remember: these characters are figments of someone else's imagination, not real people. These characters have no rights, and the show does not in any way advocate for violence against women, belittling of women, or the mistreatment of minors. Please do not treat it as if it does.

Again, if what is shown makes you uncomfortable because it does not match your cultural or moral standards, then perhaps you should not be watching this show, and your time is probably better spent elsewhere.

They didn't need to show off their butts in the doggy style to make it sexual. The posture itself is meat to facilitate butt shots for the audience and for memetic purpose. In other words, it is fanservice.

This is why I said it was Evangelion-lite, and the spiritual successor to that show as well as Gainax's other prominent works. It does for romantic and sexual relationships what Evangelion did for interpersonal relationships and dealing with the other, as personified by Shinji Ikari, Asuka and Rei as the Id, Ego, and Super-Ego respectively.

There's a difference between being a second iteration of a show, and being its spiritual successor--that is, taking up some or many of the same themes, concepts, and sense of universe.

On the other hand, if you want to drop it because you think that it's "porn," that's perfectly fine. You won't be missed.

So far...

I generally like this series, I think it has potential, and so far it's done a okay job of creating question so you want to learn more about the plot. I'm generally curious which way they are going to take this storyline. I feel like it could turn dark in the later end of this season, however, I have an irrational fear of it being a drama filled nightmare and the studio get too caught up with the fanservice. I would like to see some bada** fights, I would like to see the plot expand (that includes cast deaths), I want to see this entire universe expand.

Episode 2:
- God, this MC.... Please, oh, please, give my main man Hiro some balls ASAP, or some reason to like him and him be worthy for 002
- 002 is still best Waifu
- I think 002 is hiding some really messed up shit, but we will see
- I also think 002 and Hiro have met or have some hidden connection (that is pretty evident)
- The piloting.... Oh... The piloting, Trigger need some chill...
- Okay episode, not as exciting, but faith is pretty high, decent world/background building

I really don't understand why everyone is making a big deal out of this. It's fiction, for crying out loud, and it's flatly tame compared to what's appeared in shows like Gantz, Moonlight Mile, Evangelion itself, Diebuster, Kill la Kill, Manyuu Hikenchou, Ikkitousen, and other such shows.

This is actually a better explanation than what you posted before. Yes, one can say that this show is hypersexualized. However it's not doing it merely for fanservice. As @Lax_Caux correctly pointed out, there's a layer of psychoanalysis going on underneath the surface, with the universe these characters inhabit being used as the lens to discuss romantic concepts, concepts of desire (sexual and otherwise), as well as what it means to "become an adult."

When Hiro says that he couldn't accept Ichigo, he isn't just talking about this in a sexual way. Remember that they bonded mentally as well. He's rejecting her because while she gives him that initial rush, aspects of her mental makeup left him feeling "chained to the ground."

Remember, these characters are pilots who form an intimate emotional, physical, and intellectual relationship through the context of their machines. Their very success relies on them being able to complete each other or find in the other something they desire or don't otherwise have.

It's basically porn. Probably'll drop this in a week or two.

There's a difference between being a second iteration of a show, and being its spiritual successor--that is, taking up some or many of the same themes, concepts, and sense of universe.

On the other hand, if you want to drop it because you think that it's "porn," that's perfectly fine. You won't be missed.

So the sense of universe are actually vulgar sex metaphors and sluts? Made me laugh. Random harem title would be more deep than this.
I will not miss this show either.

The 'over confident kid', 'worthless boy', 'jealous childhood friend', 'over entitled claptrap girl'. - sigh -

The unnecessary and forced drama, it hurts.

Please, don't go down that road...

Looks like we've hit peak 2018 already, ladies and gentlemen. If this is what passes for serious argument or opinion-postulating, then we truly are doomed.

To me it looks like you just can't deal with the fact not everyone agrees with you.

I'm not offended by him disagreeing with me. I can handle that perfectly well, thank you. I'm more dismayed by what passes for "informed rejection" of a show here. The analysis and opinon-formulating is shallow, and his was by far the most shallow and unreasonable I've yet seen. Almost no-one here has made any actual effort to see what the show is trying to say through its characters, fanservice aside, and appreciate it in that manner. Instead, we have flavor-of-the-day screeching about how "this is bad because it doesn't match my morals" or [insert modern political western political/ideological trend here].

SMH. Zero critical thinking demonstrated by upwards of 80% of the commentariat on here.

I always dislike when shows apparently don't have the concept of kissing, yet people awkward about it. If kissing doesn't mean anything in this universe, why are they so shy and nervous about it? Still enjoy this anime a lot.

Ichigo should mind her own business, and that other bully short dude is annoying, I kind of enjoyed seeing them fail this episode.

The "slut" treatment was a moral judgement on your part based upon how you, personally, saw the show. In reality, nothing of the sort was stated or implied by the show, and what it was trying to say about Ichigo's rejection was entirely different. I also find it amusing that you're trying to pin this on me. Also, you quite clearly haven't seen the orginal Neon Genesis Evangelion if you think that what's being described in either show has anything to do with infidelity.

I am still wondering, did -that SLUT- Zero Two kiss all of her previous partner? I mean is the kiss necessary for the initiation or something? I mean, like she probably had more than 1000 partners right? That -dirty- lips must have had touch other guy's lips before Hiro.

What the hell are you talking about? Evangelion is FULL of generic tropes. Gundam doesn't fall in this category because their characters aren't kids to begin with.
I think like domon, io, and kou are like the only adult protagonists in the franchise from the get go so not sure where your going with that. Some characters like uso from V gundam are only 13. Gundam has alot of tropes its just some of the older series started alot of modern tropes, doesnt stop later ones from following alot of them for better or worse

Changed it, Honestly Gundam verse is quite big, hence my ignorance

Lol reading some comments, I wish anime would just have characters be adults or 18, so people could stop crying about underage sexual characters. I'm sure the people who enjoy them just imagine them as adults.

As for enforced gender roles, I would assume both feminists and agents of the patriarchy would have lots to complain about this if going done that route. You can complain that apparently the women are being treated as objects since their bodies are most connected with the machine while the male is the overseer, but I'm sure an agent of the patriarchy could be upset that the leader of the entire team is a female. Not only is the leader a female, but her male partner who seems to be presented as the best guy, in this show that seems to make this like sexual bonds between men and women, doesn't do anything while his partner attempts to pair up with another man...like a total beta male. In fact, if you really look at it through the lens of complaining about gender, all the males are either antagonist like(the short bully dude and the rich/pompous seeming dude), betas(the fatter guy who lacks confidence and the male getting cucked), and then the mc who is useless without pink haired heroine.
