Ghemotoc said: It's all fine and dandy, but what do you say when a show is actually overrated? Like, lets say there's that movie, Kimi no na Wa, its animation is average af on a technical standpoint, and everybody is yelling "OMG 10/10 BEST ANIMATION EVER!". How do you call that besides being overrated? Well they're clearly trying to mean that the anime was visually appealing and just say "the animation was good" without concern for the technicality of the term. Something being overrated or underrated is someone's opinion. It was never ment as an actual constructive criticism. It is no different than someone saying x show is good or bad. Its just that some people believe that some shows get way the fuck more praise than they "think" the show deserves , which is just a cooler way to say they don't like the said show that much. It's not that deep. So what's the next thread Arin? Maybe "Stop saying x show is good or bad!!" ? |

I don't know, maybe you just say the truth. I really like KnY but still that serie is Overrated, the same happen with Tensei Slime, Hyouka, The end of death note, SAO, SnK 3rd Season. But this is just my opinion. |

I think you have the right idea but the wrong explanation. Over-rated isn't criticism on itself, its just a statement. So, if you say “X is overrated” and don't elaborate any further, you are only giving an opinion (a very annoying one). But, if you say, for example, “X show is overrated, because X genre isn't very mainstream so Y and Z show, that are better for (insert reasons) don't get as much attention, bringing up the X show originality for the average viewer”. Overrated is just an adjective used to describe the state of a show that you think is real, but isn't an argument or valid criticism. BUT it can be used seriously and correctly. |

He knows his love for the anime is real and the feelings he felt while watching them were real and hates how others appear to de-legitimize those feelings by calling it overrated. Don't worry, every Your Name fan goes through this phase where he tries to speak about his appreciation for the movie and gets shot down by a mob of pretentious sneeds spamming overrated till he gives up. It's like a rite of passage for us. The movie was beautiful to watch, I don't think I liked watching any other movie more than that. I think I will forever be a fangirl of that film I got past that phase back in late 2016 or something. That was after how I was so enchanted by the movie, I daydreamed about it, I liked it that much. Just as I came back home from school, I've decided to write a beautiful paragraph to congratulate Kimi no Na wa on how good it did on the box office. As typed my paragraph, I was really happy and proud of Kimi no Na wa, my face was exactly the way my GIF forum avatar is now, I was typing everything from the bottom of my heart and all I wanted to do was to appreciate how great it was. Until... the angry mob attacked me with their pitchforks and stones. I don't understand how I got so many bad responses only for an appreciation post, with most of the response being "Kimi no Na wa overrated trash" and literally nothing else. The days went by, the haters grew in number. Y'know, before it was like, just like other anime, Kimi no Na wa was often mentioned by people, but slowly it was being forgotten, it was almost like that Kimi no Na wa was a taboo anime, you know like how no one mentions Voldemort's name in Harry Porter? It was like that. And whenever someone mentioned Kimi no Na wa, the angry Koe no Katachi mob came with their pitchforks and stones. But then I realized, that the "Hating popular stuff is cool" trend was revived from the dead, it came back to haunt Kimi no Na wa. I was disheartened that a gift to the anime community was being treated as utter trash. From that day I swore, even if my fingers give out, even if I'm tired of not sleeping, even if I starve to death, I will protect Kimi no Na wa no matter what. Even if I get one person to realize how beautiful Kimi no Na wa is, then I'm successful. In the present day, the hate has calmed down, as Koe no Katachi fans are still crying how their movie isn't the all time top grossing anime, and I hope it stays that way. |

This couldn't be any more wrong though. Overrated - considered to be better than it really is Underrated - better or more important than most people believe Of course not everyone is gonna agree but that goes with calling something good or bad aswell, you might aswell make a thread talking about how there are no good or bad anime. Honestly, I've lost all motivation to reply nows that this thread went to shit, but I can't stand this. How did you come to this conclusion? Mate, for the millionth time. What the hell does "Overrated" actually mean? People rated it high because they enjoyed it that much. How the hell is anyone gonna tell me how much I enjoyed my anime? All the replies here are basically saying "B-but there are objective flaws in those highly rated anime" but isn't anime subjective? Bruh. There are so many contradictions, I don't know what to say, yet I'm the bad guy here. Overrated simply means that it is rated or valued too highly according to ones standards. There's obviously subjectivity involved but as I said, claiming that there isn't a single overrated anime is about as stupid as claiming that there isn't a single good anime. |

LOLkatsucats said: While overrated is not criticism, it is just demonstrably false that no one could ever like a show less than popular opinion. Everyone out there has a show that's overrated for them. What's the problem? So if someone asserts, and questions why everyone else seems to like a show they didn't like, they're automatically stupid? Because they dared go against the grain? Sounds like someone here is trying too hard to fit in. Arin-san said: So in other words, you're so insecure that when someone else is expressing their opinions, you feel attacked, and you feel that their opinions are objectified by mere virtue of their expression."Oh you like Death Note? Bruhh that's overrated. You like Attack on Titan? Hella overrated. You like Kimi no Na wa? Bruh that shit was overrated af. You like Naruto? Overrated piece of crap. You like Erased? Dude... that's overrated. You like Demon Slayer? .... Overrated. You like Toradora? No man that was overrated fr." it goes on and on and on and on. Anything that you like and is a little popular = Overrated. I couldn't escape this word even when it comes to movies. "You like The Godfather? Bruh that's overrated. You like The Dark Knight? C'mon man that's overrated" Just... fuck.. off Someone expresses, "My opinion is this." Arin-san: "You're not a critic! Your opinion isn't objective!! You're stupid for even using the word 'opinion'!!" That's what it sounds like to me. Oh-ho? Unable to differentiate between an opinion and a criticism? Try something better to come at me, these words like "Insecure" are overused, its not working. Someone says, "Criticisms and opinions are different" MAL users who aren't able to properly criticize something: "How dare you! It's MY opinion! Subjective subjective goo goo gaa gaa" That's what it sounds like to me. I don't know where MAL finds these people sometimes. So people who think a criticism and an opinion is the same exist? Good to know, and I thought people were getting smarter. Good to know... So you think when someone says "I don't like this and I think the people that do like this also shouldn't like this", it's an opinion? Never mind. I'm not going to pointlessly argue with someone who suffers to differentiate between opinions and criticisms. |

Thread Locked for not adhering to Anime Discussion Rules 2.d(ranting/blog). Rant/blog style threads do not create meaningful discussion, rather, it just creates a back and forth argument between users who agree or disagree with the op. In turn, this can create further violations within posts. In addition to this, the thread had a fair bit of discussion on overrated/underrated. Please refrain from creating threads that meet this criteria; it just pits two groups that aim to validate or invalidate a series against each other, which more times than not results in excessive violations. If you feel that you need to voice if something is overrated/underrated feel free to post it under the thread located here. In accordance with the board specific rules please remember to follow the Site Guidelines as well to further prevent violations. |
