During the first 10 episode, I loved this anime. I thought it would be one of the best animes I would have ever seen and and was excited to know what they would do for the next 15 episodes. Then I became confused when they wrapped up the SAO arc by episode 14 in a rather rushed and bullshit manner. I loved the SAO world and the concept of dying in the game mean dying in real life. I also wanted more of an awesome fight with Heathcliffe (or whatever his name is) instead of that bullshit cop out way he was defeated by Kirito.

After episode 14, the show went completely downhill for me. Stupid incest sub plot, the return of the annoying fucking character Yui, badass Asuna being a damsel in distress, Kirito being a cheesey overpowered lame goody goody, weak villain and lame plot made the ALO arc unbearable to me. The entire time I watched it, I was hoping for the return of the magic that the first few episodes of SAO had. However, I was just disappointed by a generic anime cliche ending. I wish they just went a route with the show the way they did in episode 3. Where Kirito had so much emotion in character. I cared for what happened to him and his guild mates. Why couldn't they have been more serious like that. Why did they end the SAO arc so quickly, just move to an arc that so much more inferior.

This anime could have been one of my favorite animes of all time and ended up being a major disappointment.

Meh, I recently bothered to finish this anime, been stalled at episode 21 due to it being really boring.

I'm gonna give it a unbiased score.

4/10. This is being kind of generous.

Hmmm..hard to say of what I think of SAO as a whole.. I mean, it was sort of interesting, but the flow of the story is not really there.. :/ I really liked the beginning, but somehow after that, there were holes in the plot and somehow it just got less interesting...though I still watch it until the end (somehow). I am guessing the beginning were materials from the novels and the latter part were anime originals. I do not read the light novels, so I don't know how the anime adaptation would be compared to the light novels. But guessing by the popularity of the light novels, I think the light novels were (much) better than the anime.

However, I do like the animation and especially the OST - amazing! I don't know if I would watch the second season of SAO. Not going to be on my priority list, but certainly am keeping my options open. Who knows, like how Nurarihyon was, the second season might be much much better than the first one. Such a pity though, this show could have been so much more.

Sadly, this was all in the novels as well although A-1 took some liberties with the adaption.

I think it started out as a great idea, but then progressed into a cheap love story. Instead of developing the characters and improving the plot, they forced romance solely down our throats. It became too melodramatic.

I also didn't expect the story to expand into something bigger than Aincrad (Fairy Dance, Phantom Bullet, Alicization). To me, it feels like SAO is trying to become the next Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Fairy Tail or w/e.

Anywho...neat concept, but surprising in the direction it went.

So I have a question. Did anyone actually die? In the first ending Kayaba said that the 4000 who died ingame would never regain consciousness. During the ALO arc there was that handful, 300 I believe, players who were being tested on by Sugou. Were those players who died ingame or players who survived but just didn't regain consciousness? So what about Kirito and Asuna, they both died? Plot armor? In the painfully sweet happy ending there was no mention of Sachi at all so I guess she actually died? Also a general MAL question, you're allowed to write in the episode discussion forums without spoiler tags right?

Anyone who died is dead in reality, those 300 were living individuals who were transferred to ALO instead of waking up. I assume that Kirito and Asuna are still alive because the game ended right afterwards, there was a delay between game death and real death as was indicated by the revival item. I havent read the manga though so that last part is my best guess based on the anime.

This anime is garbage without Kirito and Yui.

First half was 8/10 except for the fillers

Second half was shit/10 except for the salamander battle

I didn't mind the incest part as much as others do, but everything else including tentacles were uncalled for.

7.5 /10 for me

Solid ending, I dont know how the plot is continuing in the LN's. Seems like you cant really continue the plot without redundant material dragging on. Though if there is a second season, which there probably will be due to the mind boggling high sales, I will watch it.

SAO arc > ALO arc. The NTR really killed it for me.

8/10 for the amazing animation and soundtrack + the possibility for incest.

I am glad it's finally over. SAO is one of those anime you just watch to the end to see it. The start was pretty good but then it became most of the time very boring. ALO was unnecessary in my opinion. If there will ever be a second season I will definetly skip it D:

Hell, I thought ALO was WAY better than SAO, SAO skipped floors/time zones/whatever way too much, episodes during the arc felt rushed as fuck along with battles and scenes, too many unimportant side stories, and I practically felt like I didn't learn anything about the SAO universe (the game itself not the whole virtual reality thing that what's his face made) because of the all the rushes. ALO was practically the opposite if you ask me.

The series was alright, the idea was definitely interesting and the execution process had so much potential, but meh, it didn't really do a great job at that. If the SAO arc was better I probably would've given this an 8 or 8.5, but it's a 7.5 for me, ALO saved this IMO. Seeing as no one liked ALO I can't wait to get shit stormed!

Ok so overall the anime was alright. Man SAO arc had a lot of potential to become a great anime, i mean original idea of virtual online gaming, Kirito was bad ass and the plot was good, but it was rushed when Kirito fought Heathcliff, i rekon he should've fought up later in the anime, this would've built up suspense instead of Kirito somehow not dying and even killing him, this part of the anime was in the early 8s for me Kirito and Asuna's relationship was good here too. 8.4/10

Then it followed the pattern that NO ANIME IS PERFECT where the ALO arc had a bunch of faries flying around and a magical tree, i mean i didn't know if i was watching an anime or a girl's program i mean come on, faries! So Episode 16-21 is where it went downhill for me because of the rushed plot; However, i liked the transition between reality and ALO and also the fight with Salamander or whatever his name is. 7/10

And finally the ending where everyone lived hapily ever after, was good but not as twist-fulled as i wanted it too be. And Asuna didn't seem the same as she was in SAO for some reason. So besides the insest shit and the mediocre ending i liked the fight Kirito had to the top of the tree. 8/10

Overall the average of all three ratings brings me to a 7.8/10 but an extra point because i liked the idea of virtual online gaming.

7.9/10!

my only problem with EPISODE 25 specifically was the ending scene, why was he with suguha and not asuna? it's just weird it made it seem like she was more important to him than asuna.

for the anime itself it was good until episode 13 IMO. the whole plot of SAO was brilliant, if they would have continue with the same plot/ sao universe ect. until the last episode this would have been an amazing epic anime.

The plot is good, the romance is too much. to be honest, i didn't get the feelings for the romance. First, i enjoyed SAO. But then, it becomes boring. They failed to maintain the epicness.

I really liked the start of this series, but the last episodes, having many unessecary scenes, was disappointing. The whole AOL part felt like something made up just to keep the show going, lacking everything that made the first part great (the plot, the character development, the villian). In SAO the goal seemed to escape the world, so they could appreciate the real world fully (a world they didn't care to much about before) and realize what is important in life. However, the ending, the part with the seed, seemed to contradict this and say "hey, real life is boring, virtual worlds are awesome".... If they've ended the series with episode 14 (+ epilogue), I'll probably would give this a score of 9, but instead I ended at somewhere between 6 and 7.

Finally done with this overhyped series.

I went watching this knowing the mmo aspect of it, and with low expectation to avoid any letdown.

Ep 1-14: Good premise. Sadly most of the characters have a one episode screentime then are never seen again (too low chara development for some). A lot of episodes felt like side stories with no real impact on the story.

Overall it was a bit too rushed. Especially the part with Sachi, Yui or anticlimatic comeback versus Heathcliff.

OST, voice overs, visuals and plot was pretty good though.

Ep 15-25: Dafuq.? I marathoned those episodes in 4 hours, just because I couldn't wait to see Kirito x Asuna reunited... And it felt so dragged on.
I didn't mind the cousin complex part, even if it was never explained why ? , but the NTR and one dimensional vilain was unbearable.
Dynamic heroin went into damsel in distress >_> And those goddamn awful elf ears...

ALO's only redeeming feature was some nice SFX and awesome soundtrack.

Show should have expended more about Aincrad and less on ALO (LN is like 25 chapters for SAO and 5 for ALO IIRC? ).

Anyway, SAO: 8.5-9/10, ALO: 3.5-4/10
Overall: 8/10 because I loved the first part and marathoned the second to be done with it.

EDIT: I'm an MMO veteran, but it didn't really matter in the end.

Well, I finished it and gave it a 7 which is a "Good" rating.

The Suguha and Kirito thing is just a mess. Seriously? Suguha not knowing the in-game Kirito was his cousin? It's not like the character game's design was extremely far off from Kazuto. There are still plot holes that needed to be plugged and the romance between Asuna and Kazuto was really rushed in my opinion.

It had its shining moments throughout the story. The 1st OP and ED are beautiful. Good usage of the MMORPG terminologies. And the boss battles are exhilirating.

Maybe I'm just stupid but...where was Asuna in the final scene? I assume they got married like they planned? Asuna was my favorite character so I was disappointed to see no focus on her in the last scene considering 1/ she was one of the main characters, and 2/ the entire second arc revolved around her.

Best anime I've watched, overall quite emotional, cried with Kazuto when he found out about the pedophile forcefully wanting to marry Asuna IRL, and super raged with Kirito when the pedo started disrespecting Asuna's body in ep 24 to the point where I was tempted to punch my Ipod to GET AT HIM!!!! D=< I was on the roller coaster ride of emotions which not many animes can make me feel constantly.

Disappointed when the last scene barely showed any Kirito x Asuna time... Only saw Asuna for a few seconds danggit....

SAO: 10/10
ALO: 8/10 (so much raging included)

PS: it is confirmed that they will have another season right? If not........sad face ='(

Okay, Sword Art Online was good - but Alfheim Online ~ not so much.

The animation was great, the fights were good, the plot sucked entirely - the ending was TERRIBLE.

I actually really liked the first 14 episodes of Sword Art Online. Episode 15 interested me with the difference of worlds - and I wondered how they would keep the plot interesting without the death consequence.

Sadly, what they turned to for interest was:
1) Incest
2) Empty Tension (since no-one can die. Too much over-reacting to a game)
3) Wacky (fail) villain

All three of these plot-points were a Horrible idea to turn to. Firstly, Incest??? That is Completely not relevant for this kind of show. In-fact, it's rude of Kirito's cousin to even attempt to go through all of that after everything he went through in SAO. She shouldn't be so easily forgiven for it, Kirito should have gotten slightly mad - then forgiven her.

I don't think I even need to explain the Empty Tension. Kind of a ridiculous way to keep the interest going. Last thing I would've expected.

Now, the "villain". All he was, was a crazy person with hollow motivation - and no depth. A Very Basic character - one that you can probably find in many shows.

But the WORST thing about this show, was This Horrible Ending.
Okay, Kayaba/Heathcliff is EVIL. He is in NO Way a good person. Everyone ends thinking Kayaba was an alright guy, and that Suguhu was as Evil as they could get.
Well, let's compare:

Suguhu= Attempted to Digitally rape Asuna (okay that's surely not good), played around with the minds of 300 SAO players (okay that's not good too).

Kayaba/Heathcliff= Trapped 2000 people in Sword Art Online. Hundreds of deaths. Turned many people to insanity - and possible suicide. But hey, He didn't try to rape Asuna ~ only almost killed her.

But that's not the worst part of this Utterly Disappointing ending...
HOW could Kirito, and everyone else, fly to Aincrad all happily like that??? Did they Completely forget everything they went through there? What about those two years of fear - all the crying - all the deaths. Is that all just behind them?
What about all the people who actually died there, do you think it's an honorable thing to just go to where they died and have fun playing a game over their corpses?

This was just a bad ending to this show. The ending on Episode 14 was a MUCH more fitting ending. This ending was just a slap in the face.
