I had been waiting (and hoping) for Kousei to start crying while playing the piano. I thought it would be so fitting. And then it happened. At the exact same moment that Kaori was having surgery and died.

Unbelievable. I hate it :'(. But...

Kaori's letter to Kousei was just...perfect. It explained everything, even though much of it was expected (not actually liking Watari, knowing who Kousei was and plotting to get him back into music, Kaori only being so "tempestuous" because she was dying, and her loving Kousei...). It did NOT make losing Kaori any easier, though.

I hope Kousei and Tsubaki can find happiness together...

Really nice show. Very sad and emotional for the most part, although there were obviously some funny and uplifting moments as well.

Started out very strong, but I thought it struggled alot around episode 10. The final 8-10 episodes were great, and I'd give it an 8/10 overall. The only show I've seen that is more consistently emotionally gut wrenching is Violet Evergarden.

This has to be the most tragic anime I have ever watched. This author is cruel. It seems to center on realizing things too late, as our baseball friend points out.

Kaori never got to have a proper session with him. When he is finally ready, she is hospitalized.

And what's worse, Kousei finally works up the courage to confess to her, only to get thrown out of the room, unable to comfort, support, or confess as he watches her die before his eyes.
Had she lived just a moment longer, she would have been able to hear an answer to her confession she failed to say, her love would have been fulfilled. But she leaves the world and friend A behind before either her love or dreams could come true.

Goodbye Kaori, now Kousei will be bullied slightly less. The final piano performance was amazing! I did not like some of the drama though

I disagree with your last point. I think one of her dream did come true. I felt that Kaori knew her time was coming to an end or that her odds of survival were low so she set out to bring Kousei back into playing the piano again. I felt that was the premise for the show.

All these people telling that this anime didn't do well. For me it did. I just don't care if the author did it this way for the plot. Though, I wanted Kaori to live longer.

I was thinking for a half of day if I really wanted to write this:

Words can't describe how emotionally hitting this episode was for me. The final performance was so beautiful and deep that it was close of collapsing me mentally. It's a very good thing that after the performance we were never shown the audience reaction to it. That was simply not needed because its obvious I'm pretty sure many people were expecting this to be a happy ending with predictable ending, but what we got was even better and more beautiful.

If anyone is reading this, just forget about the overall score of this anime, for me its 9.2/10 (yes its not masterpiece), there were some very slow pacing problems but overall this is a very worthy watch and one of the most emotionally touching shows out there. Now after watching it it's clear night and day why many people call it "Your feels in april'.

But one thing that will stand out for me in Your lie in April is this episode. We always discuss and rank best anime but we never consider ranking best episodes. In my eyes this episode is one of the greatest in all of Anime shows out there and it more than deserves all the recognition out there.

Heartbroken.

I'll start off with an overview. It was beautiful. It had its problems, but I believed overall it was very beautiful. It's not a masterpiece, but it was amazing.

I had a bad feeling when that image of Kaori appeared in Kousei's "vision". And I was right. It was beautiful to see her as her best self, brightly shining. But it was also in that moment that she left. It went from daylight to the night, and when the night came slowly she disappeared, she faded away from his sight. At the peak of his performance, she died. I initially didn't catch on to this, until we saw Kousei meeting Kaori's parents at the graveyard. And then it made sense why he was crying as he ended his performance. His connection with her was so deep that in a way he knew she wasn't going to be there by the end of his performance, and thus "sayonara".

So we've seen a part of Kaori's backstory early on, ever since Emi's arc. She was a really cute little kid. She first saw Kousei when she was 5, and it changed her life. She gave up piano, took up the violin because she wanted to one day play with him. She wound up in the same school as him, but couldn't bring herself to approach him. It felt like there was no space for her in his life with Watari and Tsubaki there. Kaori seems so different with glasses and twin-tails.

But as she discovered she was nearing the end of her life, she decided not to hold back anymore. And so we came to the lie she told in April: that she liked Watari, and not Kousei. If she had said she liked Kousei directly, Tsubaki would've gone on the defensive immediately. But instead, through the lie she told, Kousei came into her life and they changed each other's lives forever. She'll continue to live on, in the memories and hearts of so many people who saw her beautiful performances. But most importantly, he'll live on in Kousei's heart forever. He'll never forget her, ever.

And at the end, she finally said "I love you".

The love that could never fully blossom.

So she's loved Kousei all this time, and it was probably one of the driving forces in her life.

Kousei has matured now. He can live through this, and he can shine brighter. The light she's brought, he'll keep lit and make even brighter. And Kousei is never alone. He has so many people around him who care about him, not in the least Tsubaki. But he won't ever ever forget Kaori. It's sad that Kousei never got the chance to tell Kaori his true feelings unambiguously. He did sort of confess on that night she called him and he said he wanted to see her, but he never did outright say to her that he liked her, or that he loved her. That was sad, but it couldn't be helped. But the things they did for each other, the presence in each others' lives, and the music they played definitely conveyed that.

Kaori's greatest treasure was a childhood picture of her where Kousei just happened to be walking past and turned his head towards her? That's so cute. Kousei will never throw it away. It'll always stay on his piano, forever and ever where he can see it.

Beautiful. It has become one of my favourites. Maybe this is an 8, and I still struggle to find the best score for this. But I feel like its beauty and in particular the story of Kousei and Kaori brought it up to 9, and so that's what I'm giving.

Goodbye, Kaori..

P.S. I initially thought the lie was about her condition or her dying, but that made no sense since she mentioned none of these when they first met. I guess the only thing that could've been a lie at that time was her liking Watari.

Very good description of the ending. I tottaly agree with you, except the score which I gave 10/10.

This anime made me feel what I never felt watching any other anime.

Simply beautiful ending, Kousei definitely matured a lot since the start of the show and we finally know what the "Lie" meant

Highlight for me is definitely when Kousei paired up with Nagi to produce that waltz, though Emi's and Takeshi's growth arc was quite inspiring too

Once again, the people who like this overemotianal melodrama tend to put Emotions Above Evidence, instead of the other way around.

The overall story is idiotic/irrational which alas despite being realistic (due to idiocy/irrationality being common) could've definitely explored it's subjects in a more logical nuanced way. But instead we got::-

Kaori: I'm hella sick & I love this guy, then I found out I was deadly sick. I really need to get the courage to befriend him.I could approach him directly by playing for him to lure him into being my acompanist from the start but Naa! Why the fuck would I do that?! I can use half courage at best & use his friends to drag Kousei around despite his abuse trauma & waste my already limited life left.

Get the fuck outa here with that shit!!!!

Beautiful music and likeable characters but this last episode just showed how over saccharine the anime was.

This last episode really dragged out the emotions. About 3 to 5 minutes too long on the winded narrative. Which is what I felt for the length of it it overall. Lots of narrative and self inflection that just slowed up any impact. Solid enough anime and I can see why people loved it but I still felt relieved when I finally got to the end.

This show is overrated. It tried doing too much and didn't have a clear identity. Was it trying to be a romance or was it more about the music? First half was great because it solely focused on the feeling of playing music and the enjoyment it brought. Then it became a melodramatic love triangle romance of middle schoolers who acted like adults. It was weird and off putting.

The ending was predictable and decent at best. This show is a 7/10 and I hope people change their scores because currently its score is overinflated.

From the beginning it was obvious this was going to happen. Still, couldn't avoid some tears.

Really liked the visuals and the ost, but some other parts were terrible. Like how they were abusing Arima (Tsubaki kicking him while he was sad. Way to ruin the mood), not deciding if his mother was a good person or just abusing him, and that stupid love triangle. And, many may hate this, but I really didn't like Miyazono's personality, or Tsubaki's. The male friend was also forgettable.

7/10 in my books

Two quotes above sum up my thoughts. The comedy in this anime in some of the worst stuff I've seen. Serious scene? lol no. Time for a unfunny and cringe joke to "lighten the atmosphere" I guess...

This show was really good up until around half way, as soon as Kaori got sick it took a turn for the worst. Honestly didn't feel one bit of sadness at all throughout this anime. I'll give a generous 6/10. Nah.. 5/10.

So I watched the first few episodes and switched to the manga for the rest just to get through it really quickly.

The production values, music, and visuals? Yes, gorgeously done. (though I dislike the lizard-like noses and weird lips lol)

The writing?

Terrible.

Like, if you look at my favorites, by ALL RIGHTS, I should love this; 'romantic and pretty shows that make me cry attract me like a moth to a flame, no question about it.

But I just CAN'T when the message the author SEEMS to believe is "cure abuse with MORE ABUSE, just push your selfish desires onto the abused and he will be fine lol!"

No, just no. Kousei is treated like shit by every woman in this series except probably Emi and Nagi. This is just so tasteless and backwards...yes, I can handle 'bad slapstick', it doesn't ruin an OTP for me, usually but emotional abuse is a WHOLE different story.

Kaori pulling this selfish shit like dragging him to a cafe, seeing a piano there and telling kids Kousei will play for them...I'm standing here like ...who the f*ck does she think she is?! That's not funny!

And he just enables her to do as she pleases, he hates her at first, sees her perform, NOW he loves her? Come on...

This 'romance' felt really unhealthy to me...AND shallow...AND forced...as people pointed out IRL if friends treated Kousei that way, he'd end up hating them and avoiding them. No way in HELL would it 'cure' him...it's pretty disgusting to even suggest such a thing if you've ever been through trauma BEFORE.

So....yeah, if you don't think Kousei and Kaori are good for each other and have a hard time accepting their 'bond', that pretty much ruins Shigatsu for you....doesn't it?

I did appreciate how A-1 put 120% effort into the musical animation and sound; very impressive. But I don't think that saves the series from a MOUNTAIN of other flaws that others mentioned so I won't bother. My main issue is the heaps of physical and emotional abuse he is put through and have it romanticized.

Sorry guys, that is my opinion. And if you read the manga, you'll not be as deceived like you were with the pretty pretty show here; cause that manga is UGLY. xD the characters look hideous in so many serious panels and in their "comical" forms, even moreso. You hated Tsubaki in the anime? Wait til you see her in the manga; she has this stupid-looking "egg" face with demonic eyes every time she gets angry. You'll hate the bitch even more. xD PROMISE.

Guess not all wishes come true. God damn it, this was so emotional. Ofc I cried at the end ;-;. Why did she have to die (it was implied that she died because you know, the letter said so and also Arima was there with Kao's parents.

I guess now I know why this anime is called "Your Lie In April". Always thought that lie was referring to staying on the ground, but apparently it's the lie Kao said IN APRIL.

Sad that Watari didn't get more attention at the end, when that girl slapped him. I got that he actually cared about Kao and didn't delete that image, but still.

Amazing series overall. I still have some tears in my eyes. For the score, it will be 10/10 for now, but might lower it to a 9/10 because of that love triangle thing.

i cant say i understand why Keiko (Watari's invisible girlfriend) needed to exist, i dont think they needed to make him a cheating POS to establish him as a playboy. as for Tsubaki, if your friend has a girlfriend would you set him a date with another girl? everything surrounding existence of Keiko is totally bonkers she definitely shouldnt have existed.

Ok, this last performance was a nice surprise, they barely talked over it, I liked that, I still prefer the performance from episode 18, I feel like it had more emotion and I liked it more.

Unfortunately, with only two good performances from 22 episodes, I can't justify giving Your Lie in April a higher score than 3/10.

7/10 overall, this episode gets a 2/5.

What an unsatisfying ending. It was obvious she was going to die from about halfway through the season, but in the last few episodes I thought there was definitely a chance that she survives. Well, guess not. One moment she's fine and the next she's dead, and yet Kousei really doesn't care that much at all.

They explained the title very well though, I liked that.

THAT was the lie? not what i expected and im not "satisfied" with it but i def understand it and i do think it fits. that scene where he was just playing the piano with (imaginary) kaori playing with him, no words, just music was beautiful. her death was a bit underwhelming, idk what else could've been done but it was eh tho i already knew she was gonna die bc of a spoiler i got so maybe thats why?

Rip Kao-chan...

I expected her death to sadden me more than that, but I guess in the end she didn't get enough screentime for me to be that impacted. That's a shame. (But knowing myself even if I say that now I'm probably gonna get the feels in a few minutes.)
I really liked this show, especially for the musical parts, I loved how they portrayed the way a musician feels when playing music as well as how these feelings can reach people through said music. I find that to be beautiful.
And I really liked Kousei's character, I found him to be very nicely developed, with his ups and downs, his struggles, his flaws and his qualities... And he made me very emotional anytime he played piano.
Speaking of which, I think it's also important to mention how good the music is in this show, the musicians managed to convey the characters' emotions so well, I almost forgot there's always a real-life person playing those notes.

However, this show isn't exempt of flaws, unfortunately. First of all, as I said, I wish we got to know Kaori better. I found her character to be very interesting and she would've deserved to be treated as an actual main character rather than a plot device.
I'm also disappointed in Tsubaki's character. In the end I didn't have any sympathy for her, way too violent and selfish (and unlike Kaori, she apparently isn't going to apologize for that).
Also, the show could be very emotional manipulative at times, it annoyed me even if I got used to it.
And finally, I'm a bit disappointed the side characters didn't get more development. There were a few I think would've made for interesting characters if we got to see them more often.

But with all these, it was still a very good experience. When I think about how I initially dropped it, I'm glad I gave it another chance and now I think I'm really gonna miss it.
I give it a good 7/10 !

It was pretty decent ending. Kaori's letter didn't make me cry but it did make me feel sad deep down. She had fallen in love with him since she first saw him and had been trying to get HIS attention all this time! It's bitter sweet. Glad that Tsubaki also got comfortable with Arima once again. Poor Watari didn't get much characterization later on. Anyway Arima's performance was great. It would have been better if they gave the conclusion of the competition. Okayish anime overall. A 6/10 for me.

Oh man, what a finale, and an emotional one at that. Despite knowing how this anime would end due to spoiling myself on accident in the past, and despite the obvious signs that Kaori may die that were in the series, I still found the ending to be sad.

Overall, I really enjoyed Your Lie in April, I thought it was good in the beginning, but I really started to like it more once I reached the second half of it; 8/10 for me!

Absolutely Brilliant. A great staple of what the Title actually meant and the way the story was played out was perfection. I would say this is the top 5 for depressing animes because of the emotion it brings. Although I did not cry, I wish I could have for the wonderful storytelling this anime had to offer. I've been meditating what to write for a while and I still can't find the words, so I apologize if the writing is not the best.

To begin with, I must say that this episode is beautiful. From the first minute, everything comes together to provoke the viewer the greatest mixture of emotions that they will feel in a while: nervousness, happiness, sadness... If throughout the whole anime, the music, scenery and dialogue are brilliantly worked, in this finale the creators make sure to maximize that experience. Perhaps there is less dialogue than in other episodes, but that is not a problem at all, because the music already tells you everything you need to know.

In the second place, I'd like to highlight the connection between Kousei and Kaori, in the recital and the operating room respectively. It is so hard and at the same time so beautiful, especially at the ending of the melody, that I don't even know how to describe it. And the letter in the second part of the episode, in which Kaori explains that she already knew her destiny and she decided to live her life to the fullest and make her dreams come true, and the fact that she left a mark on everyone that met her... It's too much for me to handle.

In conclusion, I can only say that it is the first time that a fictional work of art has made me cry, and I do not mean that it made me shed a tear, but to spend ten minutes crying my eyes out after being in shock for five minutes after the episode ended. Even though I knew from the first minute of the series what was going to happen, because unfortunately I had already found out online, the anime is so good that it managed to make me forget about that, enjoy each episode and create an emotional bond with each of the characters. Maybe that's why the series finale hit me so hard and beautifully at the same time.

The only thing there's left for me to do is thank the creators of the manga, anime and all those involved in general (animators, voice actors and actresses, musicians, etc.) for creating this authentic masterpiece, as well as all of you who, with your comments, have joined me throughout this show. Thank you all.

Well, that was it, folks. It was a pretty interesting trip, right? It was a good anime and it made me enjoy piano. Honestly, i really wanted to cry at the ending but i just couldn't... I find the ending predictable and it makes no sense why kaori did not confess her feelings to kousei. I mean, i understand that she knew tsubaki loves him but still, she had nothing to lose, she knew she was going to die. And her illness was pretty weird, like in a episode she couldn't feel her legs or something like that and in the next episode we just got over that like nothing happened. A thing that i liked about this was how she have changed kousei and made him play the piano again and get over the trauma that he had. At least Tsubaki should've ended with kousei or something... The letter scene was pretty touchy but like i said i don't like that kaori didn't tell kousei she is in love with him and i am pretty sure that she knew he loves her back. And after she told him in a letter that she loved him all along he was not even sad, not at all! And right after her death Tsubaki just kicked him instead of hugging him or something. Eh, i am already typing too much, 8/10 i guess

The way both koise and kauri feel about each other was seen in it. though they never confessed each other in person but they are a single unit a bond a symphony that will remain in my heart together though they could not play the duet for 1 last time but their souls did. they are connected , death is just an excuse. i liked loved and hated the ep out of tears. but it was satisfying to know that koise finally new what and how musician should be realised who he is and what is his duty he kept kauris promise . the letter was touching how a girl who knew she wasnt going to be alive found the reason to live fought for his love . atlast the truth was revealed a sweet lie what i will call it. but wataris character wasnt highlited much he was good friend after all.

No idea how people can get so emotionally invested after all of the major plotpoints were foreshadowed at the beginning. Besides that it just wasn't a good anime.
The comedy was atrocious. The music was completely irrelevant and always background to talking and mostly uninteresting flashbacks. So we are left with the romance and drama parts. As I said they were heavily foreshadowed. Tsubaki loves the MC, MC loves Kaori was in episode 1. Kaori loves MC and is gonna die from the same illness MCs mother had was in episode 5 or something. So why bother getting invested? Then the whole middle part with all the unlikeable side characters (at least they weren't as unlikeable as the main characters) really did nothing to build the bridge from the happy beginning to the inevitable end everyone saw coming. The MC overcame his fear of the piano and the death of his mother. That is all of the character development we got for like 8 people in 22 episodes. Maybe there was more but I already forgot about it since it wasn't worth remembering 🤷‍♂️

I didn't like this last episode at all, it was very rushed. Still, I thought the anime was good.
The episode was so rushed that they didn't even show the winner of the contest, it was really very disappointing. I was also pretty sure there was going to be a time skip in this ending so we could see what happened to the characters after a few years, but there wasn't and I was disappointed again.

After finishing it a few hours ago, I find it very hard to come to a conclusive rating and gathering my thoughts.

It's clear that I wasn't as blown away as many are, that's for sure. My main gripes were that the pacing was too slow and that there was too much unneccesary drama, which made the drama that was supposed to hit home have less impact.

However, the main story and the development of Kaori and Kousei was very well done. It's made clear by the foreshadowing early on what was going to happen, but still, I felt the impact at the end. I just wished they had given Kaori more screen time in the wind up towards the finale.

This final episode was beautifully executed though, and that letter...well what can I say. They knocked that out of the park (and through the school window probably).

Overall, I am gonna land or a 7/10 or 8/10 I think. If the pacing was better, which in turn would've probably spared some excess drama, and the side characters a bit more fleshed out, it would've been higher. Still very enjoyable though and I would recommend it to most people.
