I’m definitely enjoying the series. I’m a big U.C. buff so I was really skeptical about yet another alternate U.C. story (which has been done a half dozen times by now), especially with it being a “what if?” story… But after watching the first episode, I was pleasantly surprised by it. I definitely think I’m going to enjoy this series.

My first Gundam show, and after this first episode I'm very excited to see more. There's obviously context I don't have but I did not find anything confusing about this episode. It's science fiction, it should stand on its own without a bunch of exposition anyway, and I think it does.

I love the art and direction. The saturated, vaporwave color palette is striking. Character designs are great and everything is so dynamic and exciting. I love the FLCL look and I'm glad to see it again here. I even liked the CGI robits, they were fine. Mechanical stuff works well for CGI and it's very well executed here. I'd still probably prefer 2D though.

This first episode features cops abusing refugees, military black ops, and nascent underground resistances; even I know Gundam's got political themes and that's clearly on display here. Very interested to see this get fleshed out more.

I thought the music was great throughout the episode, though the insert song at the climax was maybe not as well deployed. I didn't hate it but it stood out a little. Still, this show is using music to enhance storytelling, where lots of shows really fall flat, imo. Had Gurren Lagann vibes in this respect, hard not to get hyped.

So far though this is the strongest candidate for AOTS I've seen so far. Very impressive start. It's still early, though.

The lack of a strong character dynamic is evident. Gundam WFM had a strong start, showcasing the dynamics of the characters and school.

Great first ep for a new or returning fan, but here...

The anime either assumes viewers know the context of the universe or is more subtle about showing or not telling every aspect, which is fine for the setting. However, there's a distinct lack of personality in the new characters. Machu's motivation for following Nyaan is unclear. What's their dynamic? What are their personalities? It's not clear or compelling.

Dubious use of music, like the scene that plays the main OP nd Machu follows Nyaan, both use music that is a bit out of tune with what is happening or that has little to do with the scene, I thoroughly enjoy the rest of the soundtrack. (the OP was fire)

And no, I don't want some characters from the original Gundam to have more screen time than the new cast. First of all, I'm not interested in knowing who will appear, rather than recapping the familiar elements of the original Gundam story. New fans and some older fans (like me) will probably be more interested if the focus remains on the innovative aspects of the production, rather than recapping the previous narrative. There will undoubtedly be references to the original anime, but I want it to be a cohesive work and not overshadowed by the previous narrative.

If this becomes the next Unicorn,? great for returning fans!
If this becomes the new newbie-friendly anime for the franchise? Great as well!

I have a suspicion that they will try to do both at the same time but fail on one side or the other, it's a gut feeling, so mabye don't try both

wow the movie was so much better, they cut out so much from what was Ep 1, I really hope they dont butcher the pacing like this and it was just a weird compressing issue.

I wish they went with an ep 0 like they did with Witch from Mercury, but if the pacing of ep.1 continues the show is kinda going to be set up to fail, but ill holdout with hope!

This surprised me, it’s pretty cool to see an alternative UC universe.
The red Gundam looks sick! And I’m someone who doesn’t like it when they stray away from the traditional Gundam faces.
But I am confused with the pacing, everything happens so fast like it was cut down into couple of scenes?? Does that mean I have to watch the movie??

the plot is not innovative, but let's wait for the next ones. What got me was the childish animation style, the ugly character design, the bizarre colored pupils, if a character has red hair, there has to be red in the pupils even if the eyes don't have that shade. and of course the use of AI that is evident in the animation, when will they understand that an anime like Gundam can be made for teenagers and adults? you don't need to have an inf animation style.

Basically espers. The next step in human evolution. Ubermensch of sorts - see "space nazies", but not only people from Zeon can become NewType, any spacenoid can, even people from Earth who have been enough time in space.

Another important thing mentioned in the episode - Psycommu. NewTypes can pilot mechs and other vehicles with their minds using this.

95% of the major Zeon leaders died during the conflict or after the conflict.

The zeon remnants resorted to being a band of terrorists until 10 years later when the earth federation had its own "civil war" between titans and aeug that weakened them....

The Zabi run Zeon was de facto villains. The original movement was infinitely more sympathetic. The Zabi run zeon movement was cruel and wicked, both as they usurped power, their rule of their military forces, but also the military actions they took to try to win the war. By definition, a villain.

Okay so this is my first Gundam anime, I heard it could be watched standalone but I saw a few terms and Im unfamiliar with them.
If anyone can explain them, What is the Zeon army? Did they win? What are the new types?

Some basic newbie questions like that but other than I really liked the first episode.

@Biisoo these are questions that will be answered next episode it looks like based on the preview.

You could probably watch this as a standalone, but you'll lose some of the enjoyment when they bring up classic themes or people. And even then you probably only need to know a very very quick run down of the history such as the terms you asked.

There was even a few terms that are new that original gundam fans "dont know yet" unless they looked at outside the episode material. Such as "mav". A term that kept coming up over and over.

Zeon, A space liberation movement turned facist by an overthrow who used military force to fight the earth forces in a year long war. In the original series, they lost a close war to earth federation who had the help of a gundam unit.

Newtypes, Are awakened humans. Concept is that being in space awakens humans with psychic powers, usually shown as inhuman spatial awareness (feeling an attack coming) and telepathy.

Without Char's little revenge plan, they could regroup and Earth was almost out of mobilised military power and resources at the time. (As opposed to M'Quve obtaining resources for Zeon for 10 years to last. Remember that plot point?) Of course Zeon is evil and committed genocide, but it's EF which allowed the conditions for the creation of Zeon in the first place. The Earth Federation are hardly the good guys in this story.

A similar example would be Warhammer 40K - all the faction in it are evil, despite who has the upper moral hand.

That was worse than I initially thought.

I thought the kids would be naming the Gundam something as juvenile as "GQuuuuuux", turned out that the old men from Zeon actually named it that. lol wtf?

Terrible mecha designs on top of the terrible character designs really ruins the immersion for me.

Would probably keep watching just because it's Gundam, but I'm already expecting the show would make Witch from Mercury look like a masterpiece.

@Ploxyfoxy I see. I'll probably wait a few episodes and see what people think. The only character I remember liking from Witch from Mercury was Nika, and that was probably only because she was the only one I could stand. Yuri is an instant no watch.

Aside of looks which give ya vibes of "amerimanga" and 00's anime-ish music videos it's cheap and gives impression of Kio Shimoku's lost and never published doujinshi on gundam mixed with flcl for ppl never guess. Dude possibly does it all alone, script, drawings, backgrounds etc. Basically, why. Also, imagine u r gainax and u got like 50 years wuth something watching various gundam anime and lot of other media and well is this everything u wanna add to a story? After all those years? I like Zeonic OS though. It takes literally zero seconds to load and needs no bios lol so far the best part

It was kinda chaotic at times (I heard the movie was better in that regard), but I enjoyed it. The sound design was good, even very good, and the art style is interesting. I'll continue watching. Funnily enough, I didn't plan on watching it at first, as I'm not that much into Gundam. However, it looks cool, and the setting is interesting. The alternative Universal Century with Zeon being the dominant side setting sounded too tempting to not even check out the first episode, haha.

A good start, but.. Things are still confusing. Well I'm sure I'll be able to piece it together as the series continues.

Our main character doesn't know how to handle a mobile suit yet, but she's got talent to handle a gundam. She also seems like a strong-willed character, as this episode has been filled with her always taking the initiative. I like where this is going so far.

A very pleasant start.
There's an avalanche of terms and references from the UC anime and good thing I did my homework since WFM because I would have been lost. I like how the anime does not start by explaining a ton of stuff but I would understand how this would be confusing for a newcomer, I expected this anime to be a bit more newfan friendly but it doesn't seem to, not a problem personally but I can understand how it can be frustrating for some.
I really like the idea of an alternative timeline in which Zeon won. I really like how the show looks, the charadesigns are quite unique for this franchise and I like how colorful and creative it is though I can understand why some people are put off by such unorthodox aesthetic for a Gundam show, the setting looks great and interesting visually, the composition is also great, there where a lot of shots that were just sublime to look at with great composition, only the Gundam design will maybe need more time to grow on me, it's definitely not a bad design but it's not my type of stuff. The characters seem likable. Machu is an interesting MC, her discomfort of feeling locked inside the colonie and being attracted to space makes her a very "Gundam" main character, plus, she directly went to fight some space cops, Kamille would be proud of her. Nya seems interesting but there wasn't much to learn about her here outside of having a more introverted personality and being a refugee. Based for saying that cops are assholes towards refugees. I won't invest in the yuri stocks for this show but I wouldn't say no to it.
My only real complaint with the episode is that they went a bit too much with the pop songs for this episode, they're not bad but maybe something else would have been better for the atmosphere.
anyway, I had high expectations and this first episode met them, hope it will be the case for the whole show.

Not sure how I feel about this but I do feel my intelligence was insulted, what next? An infant MC?! I'm glad I didn't watch the previous series but I will give this one a chance regardless of my dissatisfaction with it but I'm however, going into it with an unfavorable view. Let's see if it can change my mind or will it force me to drop it like I dropped the last Gundam I've seen?! Find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball Z, couldn't resist!!

Puke CGI, tho.

Funny title, double tho!!

I wish they made this guy the MC, he honestly seemed suitable.

I know jack shit about Gundam but I know I'm watching this one for the girls (and Kurosawa Tomoyo). I really like the color design, very different from Witch from Mercury.

Definitely gonna keep watching for now.

@DeathCobra First, the psycomm being locked for the first pilot then it gets unlocked by Haro. Second, the protagonist, a 17 year old girl being able to control the mobile suit immediately and taking out seasoned pilots.

A surprisingly below average opening episode for such a storied franchise

Yeah, we see mobile suits fighting, but it's a Gundam show; there will be plenty of cool combat to watch. What the first episode needed was to establish the main character's motivations, and this episode didn't really do that. The red-haired girl has a vague desire for freedom since she's never experienced the real thing before, and it's important for her because...well, your guess is as good as mine. She also acts reckless because...the plot needed her to be that way. The episode should've cut most of the Zeon ship crew stuff in order to lay a stronger foundation for the red-haired girl. As it is, I don't really care about her and thus what happens to her, and if they don't fix that real quick, this show is done for.

So this is how UC for zoomers looks like, damn, feels similar to Age. Gundam always was experimenting with each entry but i definetly wasn't ready for this take on original timeline and i usually swallow whatever there is to watch. What are those character designs? They just look so out of place, mechs included. Full 3d action animation doesn't help at all either - it isn't even good looking too, just average. Score? So far generic, music makes a lot of atmosphere but there is nothing your ear would catch too. This whole theme about Zeon winning the war sounds intriguing but eh, i'm good without a new Gundam shows if this is this the way they are going to handle everything beside the story.

G-witch is a masterpiece compared to that, and i didn't like it for the most part, it did have identity at least, this show have none.

Hmm apparently we needed to know beforehand about the UC timeline which I was not familiar with so the pacing seemed really fast. I do think I will like Amate a good amount as character though
