Otome Isekai is booming and popular.

When more otome isekai gets adapted into anime, then shoujo will be back.

I must admit, that I didn't read through entire topic, since I just woke up and just used the search/highlight button to see if my favorite one is being mentioned or not.
Didn't see any highlight, so I will just go for it. And before you (or anyone else who sees the title) goes at my throat and bitches at me for the famous kiss-scene, hear me out, please.
This is by all means not a Shounen Ai story - the kiss was not even a fanservice-focused moment as people who didn't watch it, believe - as it actually was an exchange of a pill, which contained a written note, which was only meant to read by the other in order to do something outside of prison (I try to be vague to not spoiler too much).
Point is, the story I want to bring closer to you is very dark and heartbreaking, and if I remember correctly you seem to like those type of stories. And this one seems like just the story you would love to watch (or read).
I want to tell more, but I'm worried to spoiler accidentally something, so by all means: Watch or read Banana Fish, the story will hit you differently. It's not something which feels like a Shoujo Demographic at all and it's so cruel and brutal and bloody...
Currently I stick to fanfictions of it to heal my broken heart from the original story and that says a lot about me, since I've stopped reading fanfictions 7 years ago.
But theoretically I could talk about BF all day long, theorycrafting, talking and sharing thoughts or just watch heartbreaking AMVs / reading FFs, because this story hit me too hard.
The stain of red that colors the pavement
Painted with blood of somebody you love
Is this the sacrifice for the broken
Losing the purest of what's in your heart

Gakuen Alice is a really good shoujo manga (I don't recommend the anime), I'm currently reading and enjoying it. Also it's pretty dark ngl

Idk if this counts but i would kill to see this as an anime but with the theme i doubt anything like this would be turned into an anime.

I can't read Gakuen Alice because the translation is bad. I would love to finish it someday. I think the anime is great!

Yeah the translation can be pretty wack sometimes XD but it's not unreadable

Ah I only said that about the anime because it cuts out the dark parts and adds filler instead

I don't think the anime is any less dark than the manga. It only covers a small part of the manga, of course. Everyone says the manga gets darker later on, or at least everyone who has read it. It doesn't seem very many know about how amazing Gakuen Alice can be.

Yona of the Dawn (a shoujo) is my favorite manga of all time, so I'm obliged to give it a shoutout. Other than that, though, there are a lot of shoujos/joseis I can mention.
-Lovesick Ellie: Girl tweets what are essentially imagines about a popular boy in her school, boy finds out and they begin a relationship. It sounds a little creepy from the premise, but I didn't find the guy to be creepy or manipulative once he found out. ML is a big softie, and FL is pretty relatable to people who simp for fictional characters, lol.
-Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty: Boy meets girl who can be possessed by different ghosts, and her personality is affected by the ghosts. Lots of talk about death and grief, but I didn't find it to be dark or depressing.
-A Sign of Affection: Everybody is talking about this one, but I just really enjoy it.
-Chihiro-kun Only Has Eyes for Me: Fashion designer boy meets a girl who he considers his "muse". It's a little cliche, but if you enter into it expecting that it won't be anything groundbreaking, you'll enoy it. If only Kodansha would release it physically..
I'm either crashing out or fujoing out.

Welp... last week I practically sold my soul for all 5 of Udon's very pretty but expensive The Rose of Versailles hardcover omnibuses...

...at this point, gotta do anything to bring back shoujo in the market!!!!

Heard that this was a classic anyway ✨

out of all NANA kisses, you chose that one? disappointed
anyways, the only way we could heal the drought is by adapting the popular and good shoujo manga like QQ Sweeper for example, remember what happened when Orange got a good adaptation? the manga sold like crazy. Problem is that investors don't wanna put money here because it's too niche and if they put money they put a small amount so we get not that good adaptation like 3D Kanojo, the manga is impeccable in regards to art and pacing but the anime killed that off, the end result was just ok but the audiences who are spoiled every season with trash shows with good sakuga and jpop music weren't impressed, even though 3D Kanojo is one of the best romances ever made.
so yeah, just adapt QQ Sweeper and Queen's Quality
FZREMAKE said:
I will just point out Koroshi ai, Queen's quality, Dengeki daisy and Seishun Otome Banchou!.
I should really give the first part of Queen's Quality (QQ Sweeper) a read sometime since it's pretty short.

I wouldn't really say it's shoujo because of all its male gaze and its manga adaptation, but I think Uta∽Kata is a really underrated mahou shoujo series!!

My favourite Shoujo anime are Yona of the Dawn, Magic Knight Rayearth (particularly season 2, even though people seem to dislike it for some reason from what I've seen), and Ace wo Nerae.

Does Escaflowne count? (it's an anime original but it's had quite a few manga adaptations, most of which are shoujo) If so then that would be up there too.
Not sure about Escaflowne tbh since it's an anime original, but Magic Knight Rayearth is a great shoujo+isekai!!

Shojo mangakas all switched to drawing BL manga now...
BL fans Just go to Tokyo, ikebukuro and visit otome road and you will see..
It's the akihabara for female otakus... you can gather all the info you need on shojo/josei manga and bl manga, anything that has to do with what female fans like...

The growth of otome isekai suggests that girls these days spend more time playing games than reading books. Primarily heterosexual games. Because when one can make an amnesiac self-insert chase after the man of her dreams, who needs anything else?

shoujo anime rec :: RAY the animation
manga rec :: Murdist: Shikeishuu Kazami Tazuru

josei anime-short rec :: TOMIE
(* I wished it was longer)
most-recent watch :: Jingai-san no Yome
(* really weird... too on the nose)

Stacks :: (1) Shoujo Manga is More Than School Romance
(2) Shogakukan Manga Award (Shoujo)

I totally think there could be much more in shoujo/josei genres, and possibly without the BL tag theme on it as well. I get it (not mad about it) but there are many more themes & demographic-targeted stories that can be seen.
AND how about more shounen/seinen anime with the BL tag?! Those stories should be told too :D

Yeah, I would get the Eternal Edition, but... they're pretty big and were a bit expensive for me at the time Kodansha started releasing the kanzenban in English, and I already have the shinsoban print (that started publishing in English a decade ago) for what's probably been 3 years now. They are starting to print a smaller, more affordable version of the Eternal Edition though, so my stance might change in the future and I might end up getting it anyway lol

I'm a natural born pessmist and well shit can happen to even the most seasoned of directors, animators and story writers. But then again outside factors can play a big factor to why it was bad in the first place.

But yeah, i'm just pessmistic about just about anything in general really.

That goes against your 1st point. Anime can't convince people to read the manga if they've already read it...

Let me remember how many shoujo / josei shows that i dropped before lol. Starts from akatsuki no yoona, shirayuki no hime, fruit basket, ore monogatari, kono oto tomare, shouwa rakungou, akachan to boku etc.

I dislike most of those too.

Do you like Akatsuki No Yona, Fruits Basket, and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu though?

While we're still on the subject of judging books by their covers, I must say that looks worse than the eternal edition. I'd have mistaken it for a bootleg out of context. Why did they change the covers?
Worse? Not that I necessarily disagree, but how so?

When I look at the Eternal Edition, I feel it's great! When I look at the Naoko Tekeuchi Collection, I don't have that feeling. They're obviously not identical, and a side by side comparison leaves me saying, "no wonder I feel differently about them." As I mentioned before, the Naoko Takeuchi Collection gives off the vibe of a cheap, unauthorized knockoff. The changed colors are the biggest culprit, but I'm not a fan of the borders either.

Is she posing underneath a moon or under the Sun? I just know the one on the left is the way it's supposed to look.

As someone who is outside of the Shoujo community, I absolutely LOVE Sabagebu, it cracked me the hell up.

The problem with Shoujo is it's a very love-it-or-hate-it type of show, and most of the shows within the demographic rely on tropes that alienate people outside the Shoujo community. Shounen shows are forced to experiment and stand out because there are too many competitors, but with Shoujo it seems like the Shoujo community is desperate enough for new Shoujo that it's far more accepting, so there's less incentive to make shows like Sabagebu that even those from outside the community will enjoy.

That might be completely wrong, but that's how it seems to me. Shoujo needs to branch out and gain new fans, so we need less Shoujo romance and more shows willing to test boundaries, or even just more comedy shows that even non-Shoujo fans will appreciate.

I believe you accurately described the state of the industry today, but the 20th century was very different. Shoujo regularly broke boundaries with tropes that appealed to all demographics. 80s and 90s shounen, on the other hand, was largely dominated by comedies like Urusei Yatsura and mindless action like Dragon Ball.

Even now a lot of shojo manga do break boundaries, they just... never get adapted. Or get really shitty adaptations, like Requiem of the Rose King.

Even so, I'm sick of the idea that things aimed at women need to appeal to men in order to be respected or taken seriously.

I see, that makes sense. Most of the manga I read is connected to anime in some capacity. I may read Requiem of the Rose King now that I know it exists.

I've not read a lot of shoujo manga but there's a few josei manga I really like-

In clothes called fat(https://myanimelist.net/manga/13881/Shibou_to_Iu_Na_no_Fuku_wo_Kite) by anno moyoco.

Portrays the psychology of a a food addict and the people surrounding her really well.

Heart wo uchinomese(https://myanimelist.net/manga/9251/Heart_wo_Uchinomese) by george asukara.

Is a collection of short stories that focus on romantic relationships between high schoolers .Along with having great technical structure has nuanced portrayals of interpersonal drama

Pink(https://myanimelist.net/manga/41769/Pink)by kyoko okazaki

This is one of my favourite manga so it's difficult to express why it's good in a consise manner. Thus I'll link a review which mirrors my thoughts-
