I believe that I am an extremely generous guy. I never hesitate to donate when I can, and try to help out anyone in need when they genuinely need it. That is inevitable.

But I am never going to tip for a couple obvious reasons.... Everyone knows that tipping is a choice, and I refuse to tip. Waiters are being paid a salary. It is not my fault it is low! I am not a walking charity.

I don't tip my electricians, mechanics, plumber, painters, airport taxi drivers, or gardeners, so why should I tip someone who brings a plate of food from point A to point B? Does this truly make me cheap?

I feel that I am instantly looked down upon because of this... :(

You know what the best way to judge just how dumb somebody is??? Ask them his/her own views on tipping for a terrible service. A REAL dumbass would say something like "I tip 5-10% for bad service, and I tip 20% for good service!!!!"

Lets put it this way... If you give me terribly service, I WILL SIMPLY NEVER COME BACK. But if you give me exceptional/good service I am wiling to give you business once again... So why is a tip labelled as optional even when you're coerced into it!!??? (´・ω・`)

it depends on the country i'm in. In the UK its about 10% , 20% if it was really good service.
Also I'm pretty sure in some countries its almost a non-written rule, and there are many place where the waiter will chase after you if you don't leave a tip, so don't do it at your own risk.

The tips are practically a part of their salary, it seems very rude not to tip. Unless the service sucks, of course.

This.

If a waiter complains how low I tip...I'll simply take it away.

What some restaurants do is brazenly include a "service charge" for the waiters as the tip, and you have to opt out of tipping. It's a rather brazen push to get people to tip. More to the point, what the fuck has the waiter got to do with how much I spent on my meal? Why should I pay them more because I bought more expensive food?

When I feel I've had genuinly good service that has gone above and beyond the usual waiting duties then I have no problem. Otherwise, I try to avoid it when possible, though I do not look forward to a point where I have actively opt out of paying a service charge.

OP, if you're not going to tip, then don't go places where tipping is expected. Otherwise you're just being an ass leeching off the system. If you don't like it, don't support it instead of abusing it. I'd suggest being a waiter though to see things from their perspective.

Unless you're in a fancier-than-average place in England, people generally don't leave tips. If we do, its usually just the remains of our change from our pockets.

I always just tip 15%. Unless they do something really good/bad. It just seems assumed that you will tip.

Of course you're really supposed to give tips first "to insure prompt service."

TBH, If you need to rely upon tips, then you need to get a better job. Alot of people work for minimum wage and nobody tips them. Only a few places actually say that tips are required.

But almost every place will always coerce you into leaving a tip.! Alot of these people also avoid taxes.

And I am pretty sure that the owner would rather not give him any of my money/business at all because I refuse to tip.

And if everybody did that then there would be no waiters. Minimum wage for service people is lower than normal.

Waiters don't actually make the minimum wage that normal folks make. So tipping makes up for that lost income. And waiters/waitresses have to pay taxes with their tips. Like I said before, get a job as a waiter and let's see if you think the same

Base wages for waiters are abysmal, since tips are generally expected. I'd feel bad if I didn't tip them, unless they were rude or gave awful service. I generally tip 15% to 20%, or a little more if I felt they did a good job.

If you don't want to pay a tip, just order your food as takeout.

Basically. Tip is kind of for renting the table and waiter for 30 minutes LOL.

Anyways, I once went to this restaurant back when I was in 11th grade with all my friends. The bill came out to be about 70$ and we gave 80$. They didn't give change back. We were all confused. I mean, 10$ was around the right amount of money to tip but still..... that's kind of messed up. We handed in 4 20 dollar bills and they didn't bother to give us change. A lot of Asian restaurants, especially Korean ones, will try to suction money off of kids at any chance that they get.

It's a matter of expectations. In the US, you are expected to tip around 15%. Meanwhile in Japan you get exceptional service and aren't expected to tip...

It's a really bad custom, though. It just makes things more confusing and awkward.

It's not even a choice, you just do it and express your satisfaction by the tip amount.
Unless you want people to talk shit behind your back and spit in your food/drink the next time they see you.

Not that I go to restaurants that much though, but I usually tip 10%. Of course unless the service was bad and/or the waiter/waitress was unpleasant, then they get nothing. Or if they complain about the tip being little (which didn't happen to me, but I've heard of cases like that), then I would just simply take back the tip.
Though I somewhat get where you are coming from Daniel.

One time me and and a bunch of friends went to a Japanese restaurant close to where I live. It was a lunch party for 3 of those friends. We had such a good time and the food was great. We were also a bit noisy since there was 7 of us XD So we decided that each of us put in 2 dollars towards the owner of the shop. We gave him $14 in total. It was totally worth it to give that much to him. (Lol I make it sound like $14 is too much XD)

Also, since I go there occasionally for sushi, he sometimes chucks in an extra one for me :D

I would use that reasoning if they were being paid reasonably enough. But minimum wage for waiters and service jobs is deliberately set lower than the regular minimum wage because of tip expectations. For doing their job properly, waiters are expected to earn more than what their base wages are. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it very well, but that's how I think of it in my mind.

Absolutely agree with that point of view, I have always hated the custom of tipping here. Along with gifting our postal service and gardeners. Though I don't begrudge tipping my mechanic, he's always helping us out with favors.
That being said I tip the usual 15% and will continue to do so until they fix the system.

I give 10%-20%, if they mess up my order or so they get the lower end of the tip.
